  • This is a practice for tourists only, and has been superseded by trawlers and large nets etc.

    It does hurt the bird.

  • TO ALL THOSE SAYING THIS IS SICK OR CRUEL: cormorants have a lot of loose skin around their neck, to allow them to swallow fish whole. the snare is tied LOOSELY around their necks, and the cormorants can still swallow small fish , they bring the larger fish (which the snare stops them from swallowing) back to the boat.

  • what a sick people!

  • It's inhumane but it's also ingenious!

  • I'm not a fan of this, in fact, it's twisted and weird.

  • CRUEL!!!!!

  • its sad cause this tradition is dying. Really fast

  • it is crule they are tieing string round there throte so they cant swollow the fish and grabing them by there necks

  • So what are they doing with the little tiny fish? As far as I know, cormerants have no problem surviving on their own.

How do they catch the cormerants?

  • I think I might've gone on the exact same tour, it was at night time at a river in yangshuo. I saw it on my school's trip to China, the cormorants were pretty amazing!

  • orospu çocukları!!!

  • i think the cormorant gets every 7th fish

  • I think it's brilliant.

  • This is a beautiful method of fishing. Very organic and friendly to those involved. People say it's bad for the birds but you don't see that the bird gets a shelter, constant supply of food, protection etc. by helping the humans. This is excellent because it stops things like nets and hooks getting lost in the water and killing everything down there. There are ones where they train the bird to catch and bring it back without choking the food out, then the bird gets fed later.

  • pretty cruel on the birds tho!

  • wow, those poor people at the fish market. "were they caught in net no?

"they caught in very special net...swimming net"

    "ohhh okay"...

  • It's a great way to catch small fish that won't take a hook, in an area where you'll lose a net on rocks and debris everytime you throw it in.

  • Its like water falconry-or "cormorantry"tm!

  • I am surprized that some people have not worked out that a superb example of symbiosis is in action here!

  • im Chinese and iv never seen that before really stupid

  • Exploitation to the MAX!

  • Yep. We humans kinda suck at photosynthesis. We exist by exploiting things that can make use of the sun's energy (often several layers removed). That's how life goes.

Maybe you think "not exploitative" is getting plastic wrapped beef (or fresh vegetables from another continent) at the supermarket. Your way uses a lot more resources than his though.

  • just when you think you've seen everything here comes China, i can honestly say that using birds to catch fish has never crossed my mind. that's like stealing a worm from a chicken after it worked so hard to catch it.

  • There's a fine line between standing on the shore like a asshole and waiting for a bite...this method makes that way look retarded "HunsV". Takes more brains and is more efficient.

  • hahhaahaa maymun etmişler kuşları :)

  • that's the most retarded way of catching fish I've ever seen in my life
