Some of the best jazz musicains play in this album including the late joe Farrell , john Mcglauglin and flora purim. .Great album and stands the test of time.
Yeah, the "Return to Forever Ensemble" were mainly 1973-75 & this a year or so later.I saw "Return To Forever" 1973 or 74.The Welcome lp & Barboletto lp was almost all my wife & I listened to.
Oh man, Santana - that tone and expression... it's not always about the speed, but musicality, spirituality and passion.. Thank you Carlos for being in the world... a total inspiration for me when I was in high school... that latin jazz vibe infusion is just blissful.. and go Flora! First time I heard this was on a Santana album called Lotus.. so tasty.
Flora Purim along with her husband Percussionist Airto Moreira ( both Brazilian) played/sang in the first Chick Corea's Return To Forever Album........Fantastic Record
Love this song. Came out two years before my existence, but simply BEAUTIFUL! If I didn't know better, I'd say this has a little bit of RTF flavor to it!
This shows the true versatility of Carlos, Spiritual.... free to be expressive, unrestrained by industry standards. This is my favorite era of santana.
Met both Airto and Flora after a performance a few years back..When i sincerely "mentioned" that i'd been a fan since "yours is the light", she then kissed me on both of my cheeks in expressing her graditude....yes,. it was then that i slipped into a momentary dreamstate..for it actually felt spiritual..took me 'bout a week to fully recover..Will never forget it....thank you Flo!!!!
Richard Kermode was thrilled that Flora agreed to sing his song. She was amazing on it and he loved her for doing it. I miss the great music back in the day...Gail Kermode
I agree one of his best solos and a beautiful song ...one of my favorites of all time...great groove and always like the whistling part into flora's vocals
Yes, this is a great piece. Flora Purim, Michael Shrieve, Carlos...... wow! This is a great, great album, with Douglas Rauch, Richard Kemode, John McLaughlin, and other very talented musicians. Flora is just remarkable, as always.
Caravanserai, Welcome and Borboletta showcase Santana in his most creative period. His first 3 albums are classic as well but much more pop oriented. This is much more jazzy. This track has one of my fave Latin Jazz singers. Ms Flora Purim who also worked with Chick Corea and Return To Forever along with her huisband Airto
An amazing, transcendental track--Flora Purim is simply celestial and in Carlos's solo, he doesn't just play his guitar, he makes beautiful, juicy, soulful Latin love to it. His best period (with Caravanserai and Borboletta),
Nope, Borboletta is much better for me! Carlos doesn't play much on Welcome. Also the production quality of Welcome is not on par with his regular studio works. I think idea of Welcome was to showcase his newly formed Santana Band. Although there were some very nice cuts on the LP.
I disagree: the B side of Welcome is devoted to guitar (Flame Sky/Welcome above all). Also collaborations are at the maximum level: McLaughlin, Purim, Haas, Thomas. Also the message in the songs is powerful. My humble opinoin, anyway.
A beautiful tune -- one of my favorites from the height of the band. And Carlos' solo is sweet.
But let's not forget to give credit to the song's composer...the extraordinary keyboardist Richard Kermode (RIP 1996) who was in Janis Joplin's band as well as in Malo before coming on-board with Santana.
THIS is the Santana music that's kept me a fan of the man and the many incarnations of the Bands since the start. IMHO, the new stuff just ain't as good as the "old" stuff...
No it is not but has it's moments like "Victory is won". You have to remember today's producers only want what sells so that's what you do! If you listen to some of Carlos' live stuff like him and buddy Guy at Montreaux!!! nothin nice!
Hearing "Here and Now", "Flor de Canela" and "Promise of a Fisherman" on the flip side of the Borboletta LP was a life changing moment for me! Carlos hasn't done anything that rises to that height since (1974)!
Europa was his next great achievement after that. But even Europa doesn't reach the elevation of Borboletta! That entire LP is simply a masterpiece!
The image of Carlos as 2:30 is incorrect. He was quite clean-cut that this stage of his career, and had taken to wearing white vests. That photo is from his Woodstock days.
This came out at the peak of fusion rock, along with jethro, focus and many many others (too long to list). The best time of experimental rock music was from 1968 to 1973 - after shaking off the original usage of the electric guitar in the late 50's and 60's, many bands took to the guitar hard and mixed it in with keyboards, hard drums, blues, jazz, (along with slight early versions of pop and disco before they were born).
Nice futures in album number it. Very luckful can hearing . Flora singing beaty voice&moody,Bobby Yance fluto is good, more Calros guitar are nice futures It sesson is nice too.
Very tasteful keyboard playing by Richard Kermode who also is credited as composer of this composition. Mike Shrieve pened the lyrics. Carlos plays an inspiring solo and Flora performs her vocals beautifully.
Speaking of post Rollie/Schon (new)Santana Band...I emphasize band because it ain't all about Carlos...and the man will tell you that himself.. any average to great band is only as good as the sum of it's parts. That means not Carlos's gtr tone and soloing...but the bass, keys, and the afro -cuban rhythm, hence the band. That being said to you 'Welcome' fans, ever heard those sizzling renditions of "Yours is the Light" and "Samba de Sausalito" on 'Lotus'..Santana Band live in Japan 1973?
Well said, indeed... This was the time when C. Santana let all of the musicians participate in creating their music... Borboletta, Caravanserai... These LPs were the essence of SANTANA - the BAND!
Wow Santana's 'welcome' finally hipped in/to youtube...Man 'Welcome' is arguably the most challenging album to listen to, because of its low-fi production and,is in my opinion the(new)Santana band's most sraight ahead jazz release in it's discography. The way that the previous disc 'Caravanserai' oozed of Miles Davis's 'Bitches Brew'... When you listen to 'Welcome' you hear late 60's John Coltrane. Carlos was really into 'Trane and Indian spirituality..Was also 1st disc post Rollie/Schon
Most definitely!! Great insight regarding the poor fidelity this great lp was made from. It needs to be digitized and reissued. For me this album has more of a Mahavishnu flavor considering Carlos was totally committed spiritually to that way of life. Peace!
She and her husband, the great Brazilian percussionist Airto Moriera are touring and putting out great music. I had the good fortune of seeing them a few years ago at the University of Pennsylvania Vandenberg Center and they were electric.
I bought this album in 75 probably before you were born! Haas was the main singer on the album. Purim did sing this with backing from Haas and the rest of the band! Haas sang Love, Devotion and Surrender, which I thought was being referenced. Why the aggression by the way? pretty pointless if you ask me!
75 was my 3rd year in college, you don't even know what song you're writing about, there was no aggression just fact, and you don't even recognize Flora's voice. You're still a dork. LOL!!! Let's have a beer sometime.
Helloooo! Wendy Haas may have sang lead on the cut "Love Devotion and Surrender" but Flora Purim is DEFINITELY the singer on this cut. Don't you recognize her vocals? She is one of a kind, the Brazilian Ella Fitzgerald (my opinion). I respect your passion but you are mistaken on this one. Peace.
