...and thus she killed him twice. Though saddening her death is, I am sonwhow glad that bastard died twice in the hands of an Atreides. Alia's is a tragedy... too bad she couldnt handle the pressure of "nonsense" after Paul left. And to know that he left because he knew he wouldn't be able to withstand it either... Only Leto II was able to accept to face it, and at the greatest cost possibly imaginable.
I started reading this books a few years ago after watching the miniseries, my dad always said they were REALLY good but I guess I needed to see this first. I like the original books and especially the later novels that expanded a bit on how did the Navigators come to be,and how and why did the Bene Gesserit turn out the way they did ( really liked that bit).. And I have to say that since I first watched the show and then read the books I already could picture most of the important characters :)
LOLZ - "You sorry BITCH, YOu BENE GESERITEAN WHORE.. DID YOU THINK YOU COULD ESCAPE MY VENGEANCE? DID YOU THINK I WAS DEFEATED FOREVER? I HAVE HER DAUGHTER, YOUR PRECIOUS ALIA SHE´S MINE, I WON !!! "
I remember this scene! I remember watching some episodes of the series on TV when it was aired on my country back in '03. I considered it to be the best TV show I've ever watched.
Alia is the greatest tragedy in the first three novels. I'm really nervous of what Pierre Morel's vision of Dune will be nevertheless I love Dune, thank you for uploading!
Yes though abd while we are in the nit picking buisness i always though they made him too thin.
From what i´ve read he waighed somewhere about the 180 kg when he died.
Also a lot of the movies have him floating about like a balon i the wind which in sense is also inacuurate. If it said that he floated a few centimeters or so above ground, but other then that he walked like a normal man.
But then again the amount of actual make up and such that would´ve been need would have been need...
There are a few Inaccuracies from the book; if memory serves Leto was described in his fused state with the young sand of looking like wearing a grey stillsuit.
Another thing in this movie Leto looks like his about the age of 18 maybe 20 I don´t believe his describe as being older then 14 maybe 15 at best when he takes the throne from his aunt and marries his sister.
Actually scratch that he wasn´t any more then 9 at best 10 or 12 years old (it does say he spnd some time meditating) when he accended to the throne.
Though i can understand why the director chose not to follow that part of it partly because child actors who can actually convincingly play like they are adults in mind are EXTREMLY rare and hard to find and more often then not it fails missarably , had the made it a cartoon it could have been done find a voice actress or two to surply the voices
Yeah, that pretty much nails it. Sure, they could have found a younger actor, but would he have delivered the same kind of performance that James McAvoy did?
As far as the sandtrout stillsuit, it pretty much follows the same formula as the rest of the Dune films (the Lynch film included). They didn't want to completely cover their actors from head to toe, because that sort of defeats the point of hiring recognizable actors. Sure, it's a departure from the book, but it still works in context.
@Erikjust While it´s true that it would be hard to find kids that age (or young looking 14 yrs olds) that could play people with ancient personalities one could have expected the actors they did chose to play their roles well. For me they totally failed to embody the depth and seriousness of their roles - Ganima being represented especially bad.
@flexan4o - A bit of confusion there: Honored Matres were the whores, the BG were the witches. I love the paragraph in which Murbella of the New Sisterhood sees the sisters divide in the room: whores on one side and witches on the other.
not really. Although very sad, i think it had more meaning than the book had. hell, I liked Adria's death here better than her learning how to fly. The hard way. xD
@Amarian86 - I found the book stronger: Paul was just killed outside and Jessica had very strong suspicions that he indeed was her son; she did not trust Alia and felt a mixture of love/concern and aversion from her. The series lets Jessica favor Alia over Paul, which is unlikely given the circumstances. Also, I cannot help but feel a strong meaning in the fact Jessica is in the tower with both her children dead outside, killed moments ago: so close, yet so far, as they had been for a long time.
Despite the DRASTIC change from the book, I really liked this scene. When Alia said, 'I want my brother.' I fucking lost it. That statement was just so profound, almost made me cry.
It was the one of the few redeeming moments from Daniela Amavia's lack-luster portrayal of Alia.
On a different note, wasn't Alia supposed to have red hair?
Anyhow, the fight scenes rocked, and Alia's death was touching (if a little over the top). So I'm giving it a five.
Yes, I thought that was a nice connection to the first time Alia says that as a child. Hers is a heartbreaking story. She never wanted to be an abomination this was the life she was born into and she lost herself along the way.
@MiguelCC51 - This proves how tastes can differ: what you found strongest, I find the worst bit. Alia KNEW the Preacher was her brother for quite some time and she wanted him gone, although not exactly dead. She discussed this with the Baron in her mind, but the desire to be rid of him was hers too.
Miles Teg was not the final and Ultimate Kwisatz. It was Duncan Idaho. Miles gave his life so that the Ithaca would not be captured and brought to the Machines on Synchrony. But the no-ship was brought anyway. I like Brian Herbert's books. The women are strong - and save the day [Murbella & Norma Cenva!]
I love that other people have read all the books. I was so psyched when Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson took up Frank's work. What they've done is simply inspiring. I wish I could write like them!
Hmm.... People keep on saying that those two can't write, but to be honest their writing is pretty good. Of course it can't compare to the original series, but it's good enough.
Eh, I still see the knife as a pointless change. I'd rather have seen her plummet to the procession below as the crowd watches on with horror as in the book
Yeah but I still don't understand why so many fans of the book praise the miniseries for being so accurate. Why did they have to change Alia falling out the window to her taking her own life with a crysknife? They could have easily done that. Also it would have been great to see leto swinging her around by her ankle. One of the funniest moments in a Dune book
exactly. "funniest moments in a dune book" the translation to screen would have been ridiculous. the window while evoking jezebel, does not have the screen impact of her taking her life with knife. it is fitting with character and ancient traditions of honorable suicide and more in line with st alia of the knife.
also, fremen tradition, no chrysknife resheathed without drawing blood and she sheathed it in herself, the worm's toooth, leto is the worm etc etc etc
@PleiadesSeven - St. Alia of the Knife she was by using the gom jabbar against Vladimir Harkonnen in Dune, so there was little point for the change there. Fitting with character I don't know... She was not that brave or mentally strong at this point; you may remember in the book it took her great effort to WALK out through the window. Stabbing yourself requires a lot more willpower, methinks (never tested this though). I DO agree that omitting the swinging around part was probably a good thing.
true, but a few things there (i.e. James McAvoy throwing a giant-sized door across a room), were not physically possible, so they altered the scene to fit the technology they had access to, as well as the way the story was being played out.
Remember also that Leto and Ghanima are supposed to be 9 in this story :-P
How would they have done that? Realistically? With the budget they were on, working with the special effect limitations that they were, they did the best they could to demonstrate the change he'd undergone.
So happy and tragic, she finally found peace on her own terms just to die, same as paul.
