ever since I heard someone play a gong on tv I've been left in complete awe. I will certainly buy one for myself in the future when I move house. How much should I expect to have to pay for one, depending on size? Doesn't look cheap by the looks of it...
I use a hard solid rubber juggling ball.Drill a hole in the ball and insert a bolt to use as a handle.Pad the bolt with gaffa tape to soften the return vibrations or your hand will swell up as mine did in the beginning.......
Depending on the pressure you use,the speed you rub and where, you get different results. You can see this in the vid. Also rub the ball with sandpaper to clean and roughen it before playing.
I'ts not that difficult, but the results are sweeet!
Thank you so much for the information. I will go and look for some at a toy store. I am sure different diameter balls also produce different sounds, right?
Wonderful. Did you hand-select the chau gong? Its sound is well-balanced and absolutely beautiful. I always see ball mallets being used on Paiste gongs (nothing wrong with them), but I don't hear too many cases of that technique on a chau gong, and they sound just as good. This is also the first time I've seen or heard of the maker of the gong on the right. Excellent job!
Good stuff men, good!

Price depends on size! Mine is 80cm in diameter and costs around 600 euros, but smaller ones come around 150.......
Look for a Chau gong,made in Wuhan,China. :)

Yes it's a Chau gong. 80cm in diameter....and 23 kilos in weight!
You'll have to do the conversion to inches and pounds yourself :)

It is a solid rubber juggling ball with a bolt inserted as a handle.Loads of friction,so the energy passes into the gong and charges it......

Very nice video. What is the mallet made of that you rub on the gong?
