But all my friends who take a pill of E report being depressed after 6-8 hours, which indicates ACUTE short term serotonin loss. The way MDMA WORKS causes short term non-severe depression. It's an agonist of several serotonin receptors, causing a flood of serotonin. Best way to avoid after-Ecstasy crashes is to eat lots of cheese and meat.

But in that case most antidepressants that work by preventing serotonin reuptake would be quite dangerous in quite a few people. I'm pretty sure that long term use is quite bad for serotonin receptors.... But the government presses that a single use of MDMA could cause Parkinson's (blatantly false). Most hallucinogens need large doses and impossible overuse to cause reduction in receptors...

Acute depression from "serotonin shock" is expected. Dopamine receptors are probably far more sensitive to this effect than serotonin.

@Dudethatstrippin Alex Shulgin did NOT invent or discover MDMA. MDMA was first synthesised in 1912 by a german pharma company called Merck but they found no use for it, so they discarded it. This guy rediscovered the formula in the 1970s, synthesised it himself, tested it, found beneficial properties like empathy, opening up, etc and some friends who were therapists saw a possible use for it in therapy. It's use just spread from there, really.
I want to try MDMA but it's so hard to find.

But all my friends who take a pill of E report being depressed after 6-8 hours, which indicates ACUTE short term serotonin loss. The way MDMA WORKS causes short term non-severe depression. It's an agonist of several serotonin receptors, causing a flood of serotonin. Best way to avoid after-Ecstasy crashes is to eat lots of cheese and meat.

@cyanide444 Long term MDMA related depression is not from the immediate serotonin depletion, but is due to long term down regulation of serotonin receptors in various regions of the brain that only occurs when abnormally high levels of serotonin are frequently experienced. The brains reduction in serotonin receptors is to protect itself from the intoxicating effects of the drugs and is referred to as drug tolerance, the same downregulation will occur with any serotonergic drug (LSD, mushies etc)

@Rapportus5 I do know that happens with dopamine receptors and methamphetamine... But in that case most antidepressants that work by preventing serotonin reuptake would be quite dangerous in quite a few people. I'm pretty sure that long term use is quite bad for serotonin receptors.... But the government presses that a single use of MDMA could cause Parkinson's (blatantly false). Most hallucinogens need large doses and impossible overuse to cause reduction in receptors...

@Rapportus5 If you have less number of serotonin receptors after a few uses, then depression would be an unavoidable symptom of MDMA use. Most studies show otherwise. Acute depression from "serotonin shock" is expected. Dopamine receptors are probably far more sensitive to this effect than serotonin.
