Considering that Metal Slug is a linear side scrolling shooter and this is a birds eye view which is free roaming, I can't see your comparison.
On to the game, It is very enjoyable. The quirky animation style is very Warioware-esque, which brought back good memories for me. Just imagine this as the first level of Warcraft 1 and 2, where you have a single character and you move around the map to kill everyone on it, only with guns.

Looks like a cannon fodder clone gone wrong in my opinion.
With that said, i haven't Had a chance to play the game & I'm only going by the screens.

Cannon Fodder popped into my head when I saw this too. I love CF, been playing the snes version on my pc recently.
