Freud was an AUSTRIAN. Just like Hitler, btw - why do we Germans always get blamed for those lunatics who sit around on mountains and speak in what can only be described as a parody of our language. And in the meantime everyone thinks Beethoven was born in Vienna. There's no justice in the world.
Are there therapists out there like the one in the video? Sadly, there probably are and that's a shame. Of course, there are people like that in every profession. However, for those of us who are actually decent human beings to begin with and work in this profession we can be very helpful because we provide objective feedback that friends and family and even the client cannot. Therapy changes lives and if people need help they do not need to be frightened off by this inaccurate portrayal.
@nonmalevolence It's a joke... I don't think this was intended to vilify every therapist. It was created by the Second City Network. They were just going for some laughs.
Inaccuracy # 8.) It is not the job of the therapist to fix the client. The client does all the heavy lifting. We help the client figure out what needs to be lifted and how. But ultimately it is up to the client to do the hard work.
Inaccuracy # 7.) Therapists do a lot more than listen. but I'd say that listening makes up about 90 percent of what we do. To truly be truly, really, actually heard, understood and accepted is one of the most amazing experiences any human can have. That's what therapists do and surprisingly it's amazing how many people are healed by that alone.
Inaccuracy # 6.) You're right when you claim that therapists aren’t perfect. We're not. No one is or could be. Just because a therapist has issues in his/her personal life doesn't mean that s/he can't help others with theirs. Furthermore, if a therapist has severe issues that interfere with their practice it in unethical to practice and in some states even illegal and can result in revocation of licensure.
Inaccuracy # 5.) "Jacking off" with a client in the room is illegal and results in malpractice. Telling a client that you "jacked off" with them in the room is illegal. (Most states have a government website documenting the laws of that state in regards to therapy. For example, Kentucky's is lpc.ky.gov)
Inaccuracy #4.) If a client is not making progress for whatever reason it is unethical and in some cases may be ruled illegal to continue seeing the client and can result in the revocation of licensure. So, no we don't try to milk it for all it's worth to pay off our car. BTW, I've never met a therapist that drove a Mercedes. If you check out the Occupational Outlook Handbook, therapists typically don't make more than 60 grand per year.
Inaccuracy # 3.) Psychology and psychiatry are two different things. Psychiatrists typically do not perform intensive or weekly therapy regardless of what one sees on the Frasier reruns. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in psychotropic medications. Their primary goal is usually the stabilization of the client with the use of medications and once this is done the client is seen less frequently. Typically every 3 to 6 months.
Inaccuracy # 2.) Psychiatry was not invented in Germany. (All Germans were not and are not Nazis by the way.) I'm not certain but you might be trying to reference Freud, who is considered the father of modern psychology, and he was from Austria. Most therapists today do not follow any of Freud's theories or techniques in therapy. The treatment of persons with mental illness as a profession has been around about 200 to 250 years and is not isolated to any one particular country.
Inaccuracy# 1.) Clients do not lay down on couches. Although Freud often suggested that clients do so during his therapy at the turn of the century this has not been a common practice for about 50 years. People still assume so because comedy skits still do so.
Hi. I am a mental health professional commonly referred to as a therapist. I have a great sense of humor but this wasn't funny to me because of multiple glaring inaccuracies. I don't know if you know this but they need to be corrected if not for your own information but for the viewing public.
@RodentPrincess #1. Hello troll-tard. I simply asked u why u would make a serious comment about this video? Why remove your lame ass comment back? I was not suggesting you do not have the right to say it. You have the right to be an idiot. I am asking in a conversational manner why are taking this seriously? This is obviously a joke. This video is meant to be funny. It is intentionally focused on stereotypes. But thank you for trying to be intelligent by stating the obvious.
@RodentPrincess #2. If my question was somehow "awkward" to u, as u stated, then I suggest u seek therapy. Sometimes a person's perception of the truth is funny to others who share similar experiences. If you get defensive over you tube and a comedy video please seek help. Some people can not deal with the truth because they are not awake. Now, if I called myself a RodentPrincess, I would just sit back and shut the hell up.
@ColoradoGarrett Wow, really? What does that make u? U obviously have the free time to tell me.U must have done a survey of everyone & they told u they think I'm an idiot. That is really incredible. Please let me know how u accomplished this in just 24 hours bc I am working on my dissertation & that is an incredible skill. Or maybe u are just a fucking troll moron who thinks, through your socio-pathetic narcissistic worldview that u can speak for everyone else? Hmm. Let me know.
This is awful! I know it's supposed to be a joke, but if you're calling it "completely honest" it should not talk about therapy so negatively! People already have a terribly biased and inaccurate view of what therapy is and this is NOT helping.
If you honestly think that therapists don't care about your problems, then why would we go through several years of college just to listen to these problems? I care immensely about other people's lives, which is the reason that I'm wanting to become a therapist.
Secondly, there is no one method for helping people with problems. If one psychologist's methods don't work for you, blame the therapist, not the science. It's something that u hear in an entry-level class. And this video is funny.
Duddddeees.. Why read into this so much? Let's just all be perfectly honest:
1) No one gives a shit about kweekweeable's problems.
2) This video was fucking hilarious.
3) No one cares if therapy works or not because it's different for each person and it's probably true that therapists often don't give a shit about their patients problems.
4) You all are writing with perfect grammar, spelling, and punctuation because you want people to 'take you more seriously.'
@kweekweeable Hundreds of people wern't depressed, they were just too wimpy to handle their bullshit problems alone and paid someone to listen to them whine.
You can get mad if you want, but that's how it really is.
On to my second concern. STFU. Therapy doesn't work. I've dealt with depression the greater part of my life and I've learned that therapists are douches who get paid to stick their noses in places they don't belong. Simple laughter is the best medicine.
If you cannot learn to enjoy yourself despite hardship, please take the easy method and kill yourself.
Honestly, this guy is still a better therapist than I would be. I mean, seriously. Actually, he's probably the best therapist ever. I would totally pay this guy.
LOVE IT...i think therapy is a waste of money...sure some people may need an outside neutral party but seriously? i'm supposed to give myy money to a COMPLETE stranger only to hear them say, "how does that make you feel?" or "well what does that tell you?" or my favorite "well what do you think you should do about that?" if i wanted to hear someone repeat the shit i said i'd get a fuckin parrot.
@ashmac128 Not all types of therapy are like that. Actually almost no therapy is like that. There is family and marriage therapy which simply helps people work out there problems, behavioral therapy that helps people get over fears or addictions, there is psychiatry wherein psychological patients receive help for their disorders, among others. Obviously, therapy isn't for everyone, but completely dismissing something that helps so many people without fully understanding it is rather unfair.
@ashmac128 If you really think that all Therapy is is asking about feelings and repeating what you say. Then you clearly have not experienced it, or know anything about it at any great length. If it is 'Advice' you seek then I suggest you go see a 'Life-Coach' but even then whats stopping you completely ignoring/hating their advice and just doing your own thing anyway? Please enlighten me as what you want the Therapist to say then and why?
Yes, we are self absorbed. Until we pay for it, then we feel the sting of our own voice, and then we pay more attention to the simple stuff. Don't put it on the Germans. That's like saying .....uh.....i'm not sure,i'll have to meditate and avoid all medicine.Take more vitamins?
Thanks SCN for reinforcing stereotypes and encouraging people to look down on those who seek help (family and friends can be the source of the problem by the way) and so discourage people who need it from seeking it. Great job!
Wow why don't you just say that all people who need psychiatric help are either just loons or aren't sucking it up enough. By the way, NIMH says, "An estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older — about one in four adults — suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year." So I guess a lot of Americans are just faking it or are hopeless nut jobs. But why stop there? Why not say all suicidal people are either crying for attention or are losers for not being able to deal?
I met this fucking babe at a party. Borderline cougar, but I was mid 30's, so there you go. She starts going on about how she just quit being a psychologist 'cause she could take the sham anymore. Said the whole thing was cooked up to perpetuate a profession.
This doesn't match my personal experiences, as I've benefited greatly from therapy over the years. But I thought that was fascinating.
@shuttledik That's really sad. I'm a therapist. It sounds like this person you met had some issues of her own. Y'know, I love watching the seconds city videos because they crack me up, but it always cracks me up even more to read some of the comments made by the people who watch them. Cause honestly, some people who take jokes too seriously, take the internet too seriously, or take people ON the internet too seriously are hilarious XD I applaud all of you. I"ll be laughing about this for days^^
@ThaliaSandy Of all the times they poke fun at black people. I still come back and watch these things and other things. And I'm black, so just build a bridge.
The funniest of all is that the shrink said all the truth about psychology (the truth that shrinks don't want us to know), and people who saw the video still think the joke is because the way he said it. Psychology IS a SCAM to STEAL your money!
You spent 7 years of your live learning how to trick people into thinking that all of their bad decisions and their unsuccessful attempts to do things is due to psychological issues (mommy issues etc.), although you know that most failures have nothing to do with psychology, is just that not everyone can get everything they want, but you use reasonable failure to get $ and you give nothing back (not even advises). that is SCAM!
@offcenteredpotter one more thing you are a professional scammer, just because you spent 7 years learning to perfect your technique does not make you better, just makes your scam appear more trustworthy, but is scam anyhow. getting people money by giving people the false hope that with enough therapy they can solve their problems, that is scam. charging $ for a service that you cannot provide: that is scam too. you cant solve their problems, but you still charge them the bill.
@chazfourlife haha i feel you. i'm in my master's program in therapy..... it does work. but, people just have to want to change. don't let it discourage you. :)
I've never felt this way about a client, but I did laugh my ass off at the Germans comment. To everyone who is in therapy and taking this skit seriously, I highly suggest bringing it up at your next session. It will be good for both of you. Your therapist doesn't really feel this way about you. It's just a joke. Take a deep breath and take some Valium. Okay that was a joke too. Seriously, lighten up.
@TitoIsTheGreatest what about the democrats ?? about how everything that is wrong you should do so they can make money off of it ,,like "going green" ,,,,"drive a electric car" the same electric that takes "GAS" to make, the same amount of gas that you would use on "MY" "v8 american muscle" that brings money back to the u.s. not japan,,,,an how you should take guns away from the law abiding people so that the bad guys on the streets that are mostly democrats in the "geto" can rape and kill you
Oh come one people stop being so fucking serious and making everything about you. This video IS NOT about you. It's just poking fun at the way some psychiatrist must feel about some of their patients that seem to never get any better despite all the sessions they've had. I go to a therapist and a psychiatrist so I don't feel the least bit offended by this. Matter of fact I laughed because I see people like this all the time in their offices.
@deenman23 That's why your English is sooooo much better than his. Therapy works. It's a way to let stuff off of your chest in a confidential manner.
@ographymaniac223 what does my english have to do with this LOL...goodness...anyways...really??get a friend and do it for free...stupid americans, all the countrys wealth has been built on exploiting the stupid..
I normally love the completely honest series, but this one really sucked.
Therapy, and psychology in general, is a real practice, based off real science. While it is true that anyone can call themselves a "counselor," the majority of people who work as psychiatrists, psychologists, and therapists are trained professionals who only want to help people. There are real people who need real help and this kind of stereotyping makes a negative view of psychology, and thus deprives people of help.
I (being German) found that joke was done particularly well. Not because it pointed out a fact, but especially because it exploited the common stereotypical view that many people seem to have of us even to this day.
btw, contrary to popular believe, we Germans can take a joke or two ;)
These aren't funny. It's not just an opinion.

The funniest of all is that the shrink said all the truth about psychology (the truth that shrinks don't want us to know), and people who saw the video still think the joke is because the way he said it. Psychology IS a SCAM to STEAL your money!
lopesmais 1 year ago
@lopesmais Okay... so I went to school for 7 years so I could steal all your money. Whatever...
offcenteredpotter 7 months ago
@offcenteredpotter that is exactly right!
I've seen shrink M.O.
lopesmais 7 months ago
@offcenteredpotter one more thing you are a professional scammer, just because you spent 7 years learning to perfect your technique does not make you better, just makes your scam appear more trustworthy, but is scam anyhow. getting people money by giving people the false hope that with enough therapy they can solve their problems, that is scam. charging $ for a service that you cannot provide: that is scam too. you cant solve their problems, but you still charge them the bill.

But I want to do this when I grow up lol :(

There are real people who need real help and this kind of stereotyping makes a negative view of psychology, and thus deprives people of help.

deenman23 1 year ago
I (being German) found that joke was done particularly well. Not because it pointed out a fact, but especially because it exploited the common stereotypical view that many people seem to have of us even to this day.
btw, contrary to popular believe, we Germans can take a joke or two ;)
