  • And they say JFK 'back and to the left' motion after the head shot was caused by a frontal bullet from a small arm (rifle). LOL pity this video isn't titled 'How to debunk the Grassy Knoll Shooter Theory" so those conspiracy nuts on youtube can have some real education.

  • Also "bullet proof vests" are not actually "bullet proof" they are bullet resistant or in layman's terms they slow down or stop bullets from .22 cal to .44 magnum. And for that class IIIA small arms vest to stop a shotgun or a 7.62x39mm it better have ceramic plates or 3" thick steel plates.

  • If you are unarmored you will drop dead where you stand just like all other bullets.

  • Firs of all I love Mythbusters, but a .50cal standard ball round will punch through 1 1/2" plate steel wit no problem... And don't get me started on anti armor and anti personel and anti tank, ect.........No it wont blow you throuh the air if you are wearing armor cause its a .50 cal and will cut you in half and leave a red stain. Its a .50.cal......7.62x39 will throw you through the air if you are wearing armor, but only if you are wearing ceramic armor plates.

  • How about birdshot at 3 feet?

  • 5:03 now you see it,5:04 now you don't

  • Action and reaction, people. If it doesn't blow you away, it won't send the target flying back.

  • No mention of the energy of the speeding bullet having to overcome the "sliding friction" resistance of the weight of the crossbar on the angle iron.

I'm not trying to imply that a human body would be propelled back like in the movies, though.

  • 4:50 - 4:54 was pretty awesome

  • @oxside04 I was getting worried that no one had noticed Kari's ass.

  • @PT109Boat Glad to know I wasn't the only one.

  • 6:26 thats what she said

  • try a cannon lol.

  • A new head...

    buster: nooooo :O

  • an average bullet packs just over the punch of a heavy baseball bat, high cal rifles are like being hit with a sledgehammer it just does it in a very small area so it penetrates and you cant knock someone flying backwards with a baseball bat or even a sledge hammer

( though you could plausibly knock them over )

for this myth to be true, people would have to have titanium skin and weigh around 1/8th of what they actually do

so on the moon with body armour you may have a chance.

  • @FirewallAndFlush What matters in the recoil is not weight, but mass. Mass does not differ in moon or earth, so thats kinda impossible.

  • @nedlee1

i must punch harder than a 50 cal bullet by your reckoning, because i can overcome the mass of a desk chair with someone on it and push them around with ease as long as i am not also fighting gravity

i would likely break my hand if i tried to punch someone up into the air!

your weight, mass and friction hold you down on earth, i guarantee you just your mass alone will not stop you if you get shot in low or zero-g, you will still be pushed around even if your mass is fairly large

  • @nedlee1 go watch some videos of astronauts in the space station and you'll see how little energy they expend moving around up there, once you take weight out of the equation overcoming just your mass is pretty easy, they can move themselves backwards just by pushing buttons on a console over-zealously

  • I don't normally start these dislike number things but this just has to be said:

    9 People still weren't convinced.

  • 4:05 Adam: "You guys have "honk" me long enough.

(tori and grant laugh) Tori: "Buster's on a rampage" Grant: "It's payback time" Adam: It's pay back time and payback is a "whack". Lol

  • anyone who has ever hunted nows this is complete bullshit

  • @tinky626 Deer will jump eight feet high if you sneeze at them. That's what happens when bodies are struck by bullets too. They jump involuntarily from pain and shock. Don't be an ignoramus. Smarter people than these have done the math and there's no room for error.

  • @ppitm i have shot deer with 300 magnum 25-06 and many other size rifles they do not do anything but jump in the air from shock and run away or fall over dead on spot i have also filmed many hunts i will post some of my hunts people or deer do not lift off when shot , hogs, deer, mule deer i have shot none have ever got lift off lol

  • @tinky626 Oh, right. I thought you were arguing the reverse and saying that the video was bullshit, not the myth.

  • When you get shot your reflexes are going to kick in and you'll jump back. Also why are you using a bullet proof vest?

  • @DavidUmstattd Because without the vest the round would have passed through the dummy, exerting even less less force on it.

  • kari - "thats huge!"

    thats what she said lol

  • that's kari, she's always on the show...the proof that they are right, all you have to do is watch a movie that they are trying to make as real as possible, you will notice that no one goes flying through the air when hit.proving that movie makers even know this is crap

  • Am I the only one turned on by the look the girl gives to the .50 cal rifle at 5:40 and her statement about the size of the projectile?

  • i know this has nothing to do with the video, but what's the name of that girl in blue?!

  • Anybody that thinks this is not scientific must have a government education.

  • @muddog1561 hey! I have a government education! XD in Australia hahaha

  • Im sure if you shoot him with a 20mm autocannon, he'll probably be blown away

  • @nunvikingsofthesea if by blown away you mean explode lol

  • lol at 4:50! i just want to watch it more and more!

  • ...If you shot a person with lets say a 10gram bullet that flys in 800m/s it will go through you and you will saty still :)

  • this isn't science people.

i wish they did science instead of these garage/bakyard tests where you don't see a number or equations anywhere

for this myth you'd just have to roughly calculate the amount of force generated by a typical bullet impact.

and yes, a strong gun CAN push back and topple an ill-prepared shooter, but it won't send him flying through the air

  • @britoca That's logical, but that's not the point of Mythbusters. It's for a general audience, and it's entertainment. And as the general audience is more entertained by seeing something happening than just by hearing the equations and facts behind the myth, I say they hit the point pretty well.

  • @darksaiyan2006 yes, but it's advertised as science and being scientific, well, it's neither. Then you have kids choosing a science career thinking it's just a life of partying and hanging out and... disappointment

  • @britoca Like Adam said, they didn't set out to make an edutainment program. If they had done that they wouldn't have lasted this long.

Stephen Hawking himself quoted his publisher as saying that for each equation he presented in his "A Brief History of Time", sales would be halved.

Sad to say, you're not part of the target audience. =/ Well you still have Michio Kaku, and still he wouldn't blurt equations on Discovery shows featuring himself. So go bash Discovery for not being 'scientific'.

  • that 50.cal is insane!

  • people still believe hollywood > physics.

    9mm bullet: mass =0.008Kg, maximum velocity 360m/s, momentum = 2.88.

    average man: mass = 80Kg, velocity of 1m/s, momentum = 80.

    got it?!

  • a person would jerk if they were shot from suprise or something or reaction from something hitting them.

  • some viewers are just plain STUPID.. I'm just saying .. LOL

  • why not just use something free standing, and they are not thinking about the transference of momentum from baseball v bullet. this kind of poor planning is why i dont watch this show. I may only have a masters in physics but i mean god damn. yes the math shows a person won't be pushed back. but that's no excuse for bad science.

  • "Some viewers disagrees"....

Some viewers watch too much TV...

  • People do fly (I mean jump) when they get shot, not because of the bullet, but because is the normal reaction of a person trying to get out of harm

  • @newera4my Actually you're close, pshycological conditioning from TV has actually caused some people to go down when they get shot and think they're going to die. Some people even go down thinking they've been shot when they've been missed but... A determined attacker or someone with a strong will to live will almost never go down unless they receive an actual debilitating hit like a shot to the pelvis or head. Even if your heart is destroyed you still have about 15 secs of blood in your brain.

  • @BHarris25 That's still plenty of time to do harm. Just because you've been shot doesn't mean you die, in fact your chances of surviving a gunshot from a handgun are about 80% so if you get shot just keep fighting.

  • @BHarris25 I hate typos sorry, psychological

  • @BHarris25 If your heart was destroyed you would go into circulatory collapse and massive shock. You might still be alive for 15 seconds but you would only be aware for about 0.2 of them, certainly no fighting back. Not unless you were in a film

  • @erazor49 So you've never seen a deer take a shot through the heart and still run 100 yards? I've read a lot on ballistics and the only way to immediately incapacitate someone every single time is a shot to the head. Some people just have fight left in them and they don't go down right away. Google the miami shootout and read the after action report, very interesting.

  • Of course Tory does the grunt work.

  • Kerri looks hot as hell with that 50 cal XD

  • That girl is so hot

  • man, I wanna shoot a 50 cal soooooo bad. I'd wanna shoot a Beowolf though, not berret.

  • @HecateEnthroned666 Nothing like shooting a completely useless weapon. The Barret would be easier on your shoulder.

  • if you get shot by a gun the last of your worry should not be if you are flying ten feet back

  • @ascendingGhost2501 what if u have a vest and theres a HUUGE cliff behind u :P

  • People who don't understand newton's 3rd law should not post.

  • Should not use interwebs, i'd say.

  • @laierr Or oxygen :)

  • @lbgundead Dude, that is the second law. "shit continues in a state of rest or uniform motion" no the one with "equal and opposite reaction".

  • @lbgundead that's the one about free speech right?

  • HAHA 1:45 ha "EXTEND a BAR"

  • there are things that the mythbusters didnt think of 1st the steel rod made buster fall on the ground more rapidly than he would without the extra weight 2nd the last wepon was to powerful because the steel plate didnt take the full energy of the shot the bullet went trhough the steel plate 3rd like the rod wasnt enough weight they needed to add more weight by adding a stell plate i cant say that its busted but i cant say that its confirmed

  • armandux1productions It's busted because if the 50 cal will go through a bullet proof vest, half inch thick piece of steel and lodged in buster's spine. If it will do all that it will (and has) go straight through organic material and demolish all the tissue it encounters, so there is no possible way a human can withstand ALL of the bullet's kinetic energy. In other words NO WAY IN HELL.

  • @armandux1productions read up on some physics. Gravity works the same no matter what the weight. The only thing that can slow an object down from falling at the normal 9.80665 m / s2 is air resistance.

  • It may not have changed the results, but wouldn't it have been a more accurate comparison to a real life situation if Buster had been on a stand that simulated him standing on his feet instead of suspended at his chest? The fact that he had to first slide off the rails, however slight, would alter the results. A stand that put him on his "feet" that would colapse once knocked off center would be a test closer to reality. JMHO.

  • so much for a bullett proof vest protecting you.

Dont think youd fly back 6ft...youd fall back but yeah

  • I see Newton's 3rd Law doesn't mean anything to these unconvinced fans.

  • Obviously not; but then again the kind of idiot who remains unconvinced probably wouldnt even know who Newton was, never mind understanding the 3rd law.

  • why would you buy a 8900$ .50cal if u're not allowed to use it? -.- if you invest roughly 9k in a gun, how come you don't use ur brain first? -.ò

  • you mean to say he fell just like a normal non-dramatic human would?!? (the whole flying back after being shot thing was created for movies purely for dramatic effect.)

  • "Some fans were unconvinced" = "some fans are goddamn retarded."

  • lol comment is currently rated +21

    I agree

  • @ljonesvc Some fans own large caliber hand guns and have small penises.

  • Holy Shit! That 50 is a bolt action. The recoil on that thing is gonna be a bitch.

  • 4:52 nice ass

  • lol a 30mm Autocannon will so the trick.

  • yeah, and disintegrate the poor buster XD

  • And not following the myth either with the autocannon lol.

  • good old cannonball ;D

  • 4:51 Kari. . HOT!

  • I wanna be the very best

    pokemon gotta catchem all doodoodooodoo

  • Kari looks amazing with dark hair.

  • They could have tried the minigun. With 50 rounds a second, they could get 20 to 30 hits before the dummy falls down.

  • It just goes to show that it doesn't matter the size of the round, it makes no odds. Deformation of the subject will always happen to an effect relative to the mass and diameter of the projectile. Take it a huge step bigger and use a Howitzer round, the target will STILL not get blown backwards, the hole and respective damage will just get bigger. Any part of the target that is not being 'pushed' by the projectile, will just stay where it was.

    Great revisit.

  • I wish I had a .50 bullet lol. LOL!

  • In other words, you just know Video games, and Movies.

  • People are absolutely stupid.

This myth is busted by BASIC PHYSICS.

If the guy getting shot is hit by enough force to fling him backwards, then THE SAME FORCE WOULD HAVE TO BE APPLIED TO THE SHOOTER.

  • thats why modern rifles have composite stocks that are able to "absorb" force and lessen the impact shock. Also, the real world is not a closed system. there are outside forces that influence factors. Modern firearms come with recoil springs and multiple methods of reducing recoil. It's true this will never happen, just informing you some more.

  • LOLOLOLOL DAMPENING

  • @damarei The recoil force is spread out over a longer period of time, though. So your physics are too basic even though your conclusion is correct.

  • @ppitm

Responding to a 1 year old comment, eh?

  • hey you guys ever notice that grant, tory and kari don't know what they are doing? they look like real noobs. Well not saying that they are stupid or bad or anything.. it just came to my mind because of the comments on mythbusters regarding these 3 people are all negative comments...

  • well they're doing things they've never done before and quite well id say.. If anyone of us were to do all this stuff we know not much about im sure we'd fail, repeatedly.

About this though, to think a small extremely fast projectile would knock you feet back is retarded..

Also bullets dont go through house after house after house, only 2 Maybe 3 walls. (depending on what kind of wall)

  • if it was paper :P

  • well obviously u no nothing about guns a ak47 assault rifle will knock a person back with one hit not flying backwards but enough to get him off his feet.

  • they need to get a sawed of 12 gauge and shoot that blow up doll 4 feet away and see if he doesnt fly.

  • Also a sawed of shotgun is less likly to send someone flying than a longer barrelled shotgun, because that energy is lost a lot faster than a longer barrel where the energy is being carried longer and further in a certain direction.

Actually i had my facts wrong. the 50. cal doesnt go slower, a little faster than the 7.62x39.. was thinking of a different round.

Still, you seem like an one of those ace's(arm chair elitist) whos never really been out in the field nor know hands on knowledge.

  • Really, because i own a good amount and have had alot of training in firearms. Im also well knowledgable of the Ak-47 / WASR10 / GP75 and other variants.

The 7.62x39 is around 150gr and has a 1500lbs ft. lbs energy, and travels at around 2000 ft a second, here the 50.cal BMG round has over 16,000 lbs of energy behind it and goes much slower, 8-900 ft a sec. Why then did the .50 cal round fail to knock the dummy over is its so much more force and slower?

  • @jmtcardinal actually a .50 bmg goes around 3000 fps and you are right about the ft lbs of energy

  • enough to knock him on his feet BECAUSE OF THE BULLET SIZE AND ENERGY BEHIND IT.

  • Close to every shot to the torso will knock you off your feet because of the sheer pain. A high-velocity piece of metal to your chest feels like it has a lot more stopping power than it actually does.

  • Make you go down to your knees but pain doesn't knock you over. This is about LITERALLY knocking you down. not figuratively.

  • Pain usually causes the body to instinctly move away from the direction that the pain is coming from. Have you ever got a little electrical zap or burned yourself? You jump up and away from whatever did that to you. A bullet in your chest causes you to move backwards if you've been shot from the front for the same reason.

  • Gotten both and i only pulled my hand away a little. The myth is that the sheer force of the bullet knocks you down.

  • Yeah, I wasn't adressing the myth itself, because that's true, the sheer force of the impact of the bullet doesn't move you.

  • LOL then what was the point? lol.

  • Someone said that an AK-74 would knock you off your feet backwards, I think, and I wanted to adress the fact that a shot by _any_ weapon knocks you off your feet like that because... you know.

  • I think you mean AK-47.

  • Yeah right, wasn't sure anymore. Doesn't change the point though.

  • does any1 kno the episode when kari is suspended in yellow straps in the air its in the Anti Gravity begining song part if u kno comment back thx

  • so the only way that someone was ganna get blown away is by using a cannon?

  • but thats not the myth though

  • I want that Buster mask :D

  • For the fun of it they should have got a Browning M2 Heavy Machine gun and shoot 150 rounds into it.

  • 6:36 all the guys are staring at her butt lol.

  • You too :D

  • Yup!

  • person being shot can only be pushed back as far as person shooting gun. myth busted. go physics!

  • Unless the gun is on a turret or tripod.

  • que lindo trasero de Kary!! 4:51 y 5:56 y que sexy pose en 6:36 ......I'm in love!!

  • lol try a L44 120mm.

  • dude. learn some physics.

  • That wouldn't help.

They shot it at its very support with a steel plate and with a .50 BMG and it didn't fly back. How is making it even harder by supporting it by its base (which isn't realistic either, as noted by a previous commenter) going to help? They tried everything possible to make it fly back with a bullet.

  • oooooooh shit i wouldnt wana be shot by a 50 cal lol

  • i tought the center of gravity was 2 inches below the navel?

  • What about a rocket launcher?

  • That Mythbuster chick i sooo hot!

  • true that! Great ass too.

  • hell yes! luv 2 bang that!

  • uhm, that steel plate isn't thick enough to stop a .50 caliber round...

  • yeah and it lodged in busters spine... the plate didnt stop the round but the plate and the dummy did

  • it dosent matter though beacuse it still hit his spine and stopped at his sipne its still 100% if it went through it wouldnt but it didnt

  • lol they bleeped "god" damnit

  • ...They're failing to take into account the fact that if someone gets shot, they'll flinch away from the pain.

  • if you got shot by a .50cal you wouldnt be flinching

  • you idiot, you dont flinch, you pull back from the force of the bullet.

  • Bet she's married.

  • Jamesjr your to smart to post here. This post is for high school drop-outs to argue about what say saw on the t.v.

  • One myth isn't busted. That chick is smokin ass hot.

  • For example a .45 ACP puts about 490 foot lbs on target (more or less depending on the exact round used and distance to target), while the .50 cal. they used puts about 11,000 foot lbs on target. If the .50 cal doesn't knock one back no other round would have a chance.

The fact is the power of any bullet hitting a person can not knock one back. Otherwise it would throw the shooter back further than the person being hit (muzzle velocity always greater than velocity/foot lbs at target).

  • This is not a myth based on real life occurences. It comes from Hollywood and how the dorectors of Westerns depictd someone getting shot.

  • many people actually believe this myth, see watch?v=jEex2UChBtw

  • this is a reason why i dont goto a public school so i dont end up like an idiot who is wrong all the time

  • Excuse me I go to a public school and I'm not stupid. I graduated with a 4.0 GPA. Go away and ----- yourself.

  • just cause you go to a public school doesnt mean your stupid, i hav a 99.75 avg thank you very much

  • what happened to the .25%? im jus asking. =D

  • Most people who are shot, jump or are knocked off balance causing them to fall backwards or even fall that far, i don't even see how this was a myth with all respect.

  • >>"i don't even see how this was a myth with all respect. "

Because the world is full of idiots. One idiot is born every second, that's the bad news.

  • one variable that they fall to factor in is human shock. the shear shock of the bullet hitting a person could through them or they could be attempting to jump away.

  • but thats not a bullet blasting someone back, thats someone jumping back.

  • wow...they were quick to move to the .50cal

  • hahaha busters angry!!!

  • >bullet will CUT THROUGHT the one that is shot

    So?

  • You're missing the point of the crazy setup. They wanted to make it as likely as possible that Buster would go flying backwards. They did that so nobody could come up with a theoretical situation where he ~might~ have gone flying.

  • In an infamous shoot out in Miami on April 11 1986, two heavily armed criminals were cornered and out numbered by a team of armed FBI agents. During the shoot out two agents were killed and five others were wounded and both suspects were killed.

Both suspects was hit multiple times, were not knocked off their feet and continued shooting even though one had recieved a wound that would have eventually killed him.

If a man is full of adrenaline he can remain fighting after many hits.

  • thats why they put the steel plate in, and if the bullet is supposed to cut, then no shit it wont blast you back, nore proof its busted

  • wat season was this from?!?!

  • Read video info. 3rd season

  • whats toris last name??? i know it starts with a b but i dont know whqat it is?

  • Tory Belleci.

  • thanks

  • And buster!!

  • OMG i wanna be that pig!!! (not realy)

  • yea but a 50 cal is armor piercing what would happen if you use a hollow point? it spreads and fragments at point of impact to maximize damage surface. but since mostly hand guns use hollow points and not assault rifles. i figure the same the armor piercing bullet goes right threw and a hollow point from a 9mm just causes more internal damage but a hollow point 50 cal might blow you away that or rip you apart XD Im leaning towards rip you apart my self.

  • i dont know why are people so interested in bigcalibers and big guns like the desert eagle (ego gun) limited in production and consumers normaly having dead brain cells to fire a fucking gun ment for hunting bears not fucking people or cans and thinking its cool because they fire the gun one handed they are all a bucnch pretenders and assholes.

  • I'm happy they went the extra mile to get the point across to the non-believers. People don't get blown away by a bullet (not even a fifty-cal), and if a bullet goes through the victim, even less kinetic energy is transferred from bullet to body (meaning an even smaller chance of being blown away. What CAN happen is that a person may be caught off-balance and fall suddenly with a little extra force from the impact, which may have been the origin of the myth. Gotta love this show!
