I Thank GOD for YOU!!! You truely are a gift to us, and I must say as a 45 yo woman that has dealt with abuse and is still single, I hope to find a husband that is as awesome as yours.
"If I had known what it would do to you, I never would have done it." Liar. How can you be a grown man in the 1900s, do something like that, and not know it's wrong?
My sisters and mother still call me a liar when I told, trying to protect my niece from the same thing happening to her. Her own mother, my oldest sister, is still angry at me for "telling." Did it do any good? I have no idea. But I am so glad that Marilyn stated that "they never stop" so 20 years later I know I must have done the right thing. No matter what my family is still doing to me. The families have to stop protecting the abusers and blaming the victims. This has to STOP!
I was lucky enough to meet Marilyn van Derbur in person when she came to Duke University to speak about incest and the devastating effects on our children. I was horrified to find out that she was "not believed," just as I was not when I "told" as a child and as a teenager. Even today I am refuted by certain so-called "family" members. I am so glad to see that Ms. van Derbur is still speaking out on behalf of children at all costs and that there are still good people in this world. Go, Marilyn!
Of course she is the BEST Miss America EVER!! Her continuing legacy, help, care, compassion and so forth is just as stunning as she is, as a person. I do not believe anyone before her or after has come close to the dedication of helping people as her.
LOVE this woman. She is truly wonderful.
