You are so lucky to have been at this game. I don't think there's been a more dramatic homerun hit in Yankee history. The reaction of the fans, among other variables, makes this, in my eyes, a moment even more special than Reggie's three homers or Boone's walkoff in 2003. This homer stands alone.
Does anybody have the WPIX broadcast of that game with Chambliss' homer to win the 1976 pennant for the Yanks? Phil Rizzuto's call of Chambliss' homer was legendary!
@TheRetro64 That would be a great collectable to own. I still may have a recording of the homerun anouncement on eight track tape somewhere. I was at the game, sitting in the bleachers. When I got home after the game, I immediatley taped the replay as went: Rizzuto; He hits one deep to right center...That ball issss...Outta here! The Yankees Win The Pennant!!! Holy Cow Chris Chamblis on one swing, and...The Yankees win the american league pennant and this field will never be The same again.
The clip ends with Keith Jackson saying Dick Tidrow. He was about to say that Dick Tidrow was the winning pitcher. He had pitched the top of the 9th & got out of a first & second two-out jam when Jim Wohlford grounded to Nettles, who then forced Cowens at second. If you look at that replay, it looks like Cowens got there just a hair before the throw or at the same time. Had he been called safe GEORGE BRETT would've been up with the bases loaded. Things might've turned out different.
Wow! I never knew the Cincinnati Reds beat the Phillies 7-6 in the NLCS that same year. Incredible! NY 7 - KC 6; Cin 7 - Phil 6, both in 1976. My beloved Yanks got creamed by the Reds in the World Series that year, 4 games to zip. Oh well. Reggie showed up the next year and the rest is history! =)
There was a big difference between the wo outcomes though. The Reds swept the Phillies in 3, and the Yanks went the full five games vs. Kansas City. The Reds were so good that year it almost wasn't an embarassment to lose to them. The only team as good as that Reds team in recent memory is the Yanks in 98.
@dzanier ~ Hey, I'm a die hard Yankees fan and have been since '76 but regrettably, I would put the house on the '75-'76 Reds team. Honestly, I believe the '72-'73 Oakland A's teams were better than the Reds.
Their starting pitching was superior to the Reds, & their relievers were probably better; Hunter, Holtzman, Blue, Fingers and Knowles compared to Gullet, Nolan, Billingham, McCeaneney, Borbon and Eastwick. The 76 Reds were 4th in the NL in pitching, which is not bad, but it's irrelevant since they led the majors in hits, runs, doubles, triples, homers, solen bases AND fielding percentage. Plus, Johnny Bench had a down year, 16hrs & 74 rbi. The A's had great teams though. You're right.
I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO. I WAS 17 AT THE TIME AND WENT NUTS AFTER CHAMBLISS HIT THE HOMER!
I NEVER THOUGHT THE YANKEES WOULD WIN A TITLE. I GREW UP WITH THEM STRUGGLING. AND THEN, WITH ONE SWING, MY FAVORITE YANKEE FROM THAT SEASON WINS A CHAMPIONSHIP I THOUGHT I WOULD NEVER SEE!
I MET CHRIS 20 YEARS LATER. HE IS A TRUE GENTLEMAN! VERY MUCH A CLASS ACT.
AGAIN, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HELPING ME RELIVE ONE OF THE GREAT MOMENTS OF MY YOUTH!
@TheRealSuperman1000 I second the motion here! I grew up the same way! I was a year younger when I watched Hal McRae make that desperate leap to no avail. Right afterwards I, myself, made a leap of my own and practically went through the ceiling! Sure, it was short-lived, thanks to the Reds, but what a thrill while it lasted!
