This is AWESOME!...But 1 comment! U mentioned putting the digital world tangible! that Idea was the first originated by Pranav Mistry= The MasterMind who created Six Sense Device!
PhD studant? So this is what you do, lose time doing something that does not add anything... how yould you put the massa center device inside a phone?
I don't suppose Fabian is actually suggesting that iPhones, or other smartphones, take on the 3 ideas that he showed, but rather he is using them as practical/physical examples of the postulation that technology is becoming more human. In the end, it will most likely be in far more subtle ways than he suggests. His presentation is fun, interesting, and makes you think - classic TED stuff.
i think this is a refreshing way of looking at the problem of technology becoming more and more socially disjointing. I wish Mr. Hemmert the best of luck and I might just get one of those little breathing phones...provided the finished product is a little slimmer, of course :-)
He makes a great point. While it is a little unconventional at this point, it would definitely have its uses. I'd love to see more of this design in the future.
The first example could be very practical. I'm not sure about you but most people respond better to physical stimuli in addition to visuals than solely visuals. I'm not the most creative person but the example of the map and feeling the weight of the phone change in your hand would really help in getting people to understand directions.
Yeah i guess your right, the ease of use is what pushed the iphone, but this takes up significant costs, space, and engineering feats to produce in a pocketable phone
Yeah there is no doubt about that. That is why it was a pretty big risk for Nintendo to use accelerometers in their controllers for the Wii. Technology takes time to be practical, but very often it is soooo worth it.
That's fucked up. I want it as thin as possible. Paper thin. And rigid, scratch-proof, with a thin bezel and cable-free charging (not wireless charging, more like a special dock). No buttons on the side or any "home" buttons. :) Hop to it, Apple ! Redesign that iPad already !
For anyone interested, there is an unofficial chatroom on IRC. #tedtalks on Freenode

It's very funny, only that. I like the comments.

the prototypes are way cumbersome, but I like the idea of conveying information with tactile devices.

different and interesting, i have a an idea though that this wont really take off, people want sleek thin technology, not bulky, moving objects.

Maybe in the future we'll all have our own robot companions, like we have phones. That'll be cool.

This is a great example of solving a problem that doesn't exist.

cool... just too many moving parts, find a way to do the same thing just without all that and you've got a winner.

we made your phone 'breath' now it's more human?

good idea, it would kill any competitors if this was a competition of ideas
but no ones gonna produce something like this, it just no that cool, nor practical

Moving center of gravity would take a lot of space. Same with breathing. Totally useless...

I would be really thrilled using something with a moving gravity center. Great idea!
