People should do their research before criticizing. They aren't human characters technically, they're "avatars" used by the Dino/Ape characters to fight for them. According to the developers who were in the process of making the game, each avatar character could transform into their respective Dino/Ape counterpart. Shame it was cancelled, looks like it could have been a really cool game.

It's known as "Primal Rage" for a reason, because unlike other vs. games that use humans or aliens to fight each other, this one featured dinosaur-like gods, as well as ape-like gods. And maybe it's just me, but the intro for "Primal Rage II" isn't as awesome as the one for "Primal Rage." It'd be awesome if this was brought back! :)
The reason there are these human characters are that the meteor that crashed into Earth in the first one was an egg of the skeletal dragon Necrosan. The monsters/gods from the first were trapped in suspended animation, so they had one person from their tribe fight Necrosan's people and free the gods to fight Necrosan. A new saber tooth tiger character called Slashfang was also added.
Neat! It's fascinating to actually see a piece of an unreleased game. I don't know if I would have liked it if it actually existed, but it's certainly fun as a piece of arcana.
i used to love playing this game i even bought an xbox arcade greatest hits cd just because it had primal rage on it... bought myself an auto fire controller as well... that shit got so funny like an infinite tornado in midair rounding up thousands of points of unending brutality lol

The first game brings back memories. I read about a few things from the comic book that I purchased in my local comic shop (Used to be a Mega City Comics but it was shut down) back in about '95 somewhere around September I think. I still own the comic and I have an action figure of Slash-Fang and Armadon. I thank a close friend for those since now they're such a rarity. They had concept art for PRII in the comic. And if people don't believe me: I'll post a video or something. Loved this game.
the guy that i played with was the samurai guy, i also played as the funny haired guy with yellow pants. sauron was the alter ego of the yellow pants guy, i believe.
like i said. the game was out for testing purposes. you could on play as the humans, but yes as you did combos you would do a move mid combo which would turn you into the alter ego for the final hit in the combo. as time progressed, the alter egos were fully unlocked as well. at that point you could choose the animals and play with them the whole 2 rounds. i dont remember if you could change into human from mid combo . this was 15 years ago, i wasn't even in highschool yet.
i think these are suppose to be the human forms of the characters, even though the names are different: it looks there in order from Diablo, Vertigo, Sauron, Talon, Chaos, (Unknown), Blizzard, & then Armadon

@cujo55544 From what I was told by someone that beta tested the game, was that you could transform into a dino at any point in the game. That lead to a ton of combo possibilities and was really fun. There really aren't many games out there that have ever done morphs mid-combo, but later came games like some of the 3D MKs that let you change fighting styles mid combo, which is similar but broken.
The Primal Rage developers knew how to fix broken properties, so it could have turned out great.

let me start out by saying, that i have actually played this game IN THE ARCADE at least a good 5 or 6 times. the game play of that was spectacular . each of those characters had moves where they would transform into their alter egos' (the dinosaurs) in mid combo. later on , when i played it the final time, the actual dinosaurs were unlocked. meaning that instead of you choosing the humans, you could choose to play as the dinosaurs themselves. the game was very comb heavy

I see my character Blizzard at least got a decent looking avatar (Kaze). I would guess the finished game may have turned people off because you start off as a human character (which is kinda strange too, aren't the gods of the first game supposed to tower over mere humans? This seems like the humans and gods were of equal height lol). For storyline purposes I can understand, but it could have allowed you to switch between avatar and god on the selection screen too, imo anyway.
All the Dinosaurs and Beasts from Primal Rage I were in Primal Rage II, with new additions, Slashfang and Necrosan. The human characters are avatars for their respective beast "god" and could do super moves that temporarily transformed them (all 3 punches or all 3 kicks) as well as do a move that could instant-morph them. The reason you only see human characters on the select screen is because the old characters were on time release/code unlock for the location test version.
I loved Primal Rage when I was a kid but on attempting to replay it recently I think I may have liked the idea of a fighting game with dinosaurs more than the game itself, which is bad.
I remember the test version of this being at the now demised arcade "Just For Fun" in Arlington Heights, IL. Its also where they tested all the mortal kombats before all the full fatalities and moves came out. Anyways, i remember seeing this and trying to play it once. During demo mode one of the charachters did a fatality where they ripped out the opponents intestines and jump roped with them. No lie. It was cool since the humans morphed into deities/dinosaurs during combos

I created the PR2 petition some years ago. Sent it to Dennis Harper... Programmer for PR and PR2! We had talked about the reasons PR2 was canned and the main reason was the arcade business was going down and Marvel VS Capcom was just released and they were not even going to bother competing with it! He also told me about the technology they used on PR2 that has a patent. It was claymation that still has never appeared in anything else to this day. True story. I hope all us fans see this one day!
These were shaman and you could morph into their monster counterparts. This game did not test well in arcades and development ceased. The game remains and will remain unreleased.

Through some sort of unrevealed method, the characters could turn into the original monsters. As you can see on the character select screen, there was a new character as well.
The dinosaurs and apes, in addition to the sabertooth, ARE in the game, not just their avatars. The video and info box even show that they were in it.

I played this game way back when at an arcade outside of Chicago. It was a test machine. You played as a human, but could turn into a dinosaur/creature during the match. I thought the game was not bad, but I only played it once and never saw it again.
there is one in california. It seems to be the best working and the only one with a fully-decked-out cabinet. If yours and the other stories about actually playing this game are true, then that machine is playable. Which means that it obviously isn't the one that got dumped into MAME, becuase this rom here works worse than shit.

What? In the bios mode, you can clearly see the names of the past fighters but in the character select, there is no dinosaur or gargantuan ape. WTF. Perhaps it was for the better than Primal Rage II never came out.
There ia another video up now showing the 8-non Necrosan monsters selectable. Necrosan is playable according to this video but I don't get how yet. He also got a stage select and the sfx to play.
And for the last time you guys, the humans are optional! Even if you got this select screen, you pick an avatar and then MORPH INTO THE GOD! It is not "human-centric," the humans are a tool used by the gods to circumvent Necrosan's evil voodoo spells. It's a plot point, not a handicap.
You actually did play as the humans on the select screen, at least in the version I played. Back in the 90's I was an arcade junkie and played several test machines, including Atari's "Freeze" as well as another Atari 3D fighter that I can't recall the name of.

Yeah exactly. From what I was told by a beta tester of the game, you could turn into the Animals at any point (even during combos). I think that would be really fun to play. You start off with a nice juggle of jump in combo, then morph into an animal mid-combo and give some heavy damage.
There is / was a video game series for the PS2 were people turned into monsters, it was called Bloody Roar (four installments total, plus alternate versions of game 3 foe GC and Xbox). Also, did anyone else notice that Kaze looks kind of like Sub-Zero from the Mortal Kombat games?
You know something just got me thinking. What if the reason why the original characters are in there is because they have to be in order for the Avatars to shapeshift properly. We may never know unless we get this rom completely operational. They could also be just placeholders for empty slots in the program. Dummy characters in otherwords. Of course I would really like to see if it is possible to rip sprites from the internal data of the rom with a software other than MAME.
I talked with a beta tester that actually played this game before it was canned and it is the way I stated. All the Avatars morphed into the previous characters in the game.
And yeah, that is a shame there isn't a way to dump all of the art out of it, or at least something else. It could be possible that there is a program but those types of things can be a pain to find.
How'd you get that MAME rom to work? I can't get it to work. All of the places I've been to to download the rom have been the same romfile and haven't worked. The emulator says it can't run it because a rom or other file are missing.

During demo mode one of the charachters did a fatality where they ripped out the opponents intestines and jump roped with them. No lie. It was cool since the humans morphed into deities/dinosaurs during combos

I created the PR2 petition some years ago. Sent it to Dennis Harper... Programmer for PR and PR2! We had talked about the reasons PR2 was canned and the main reason was the arcade business was going down and Marvel VS Capcom was just released and they were not even going to bother competing with it! He also told me about the technology they used on PR2 that has a patent. It was claymation that still has never appeared in anything else to this day. True story. I hope all us fans see this one day!

I was crushed when this game was cancelled. I loved the orignal Primal Rage.
Ist: It was a fighting game with dinosaurs. 2nd. It was the the only fighting game we own that I could beat my older brother at.
I always heard that Primal Rage franchise was a victim of the violent game backlash of the 90's.
Please come back Primal Rage. You deserve and chance on the next gen systems.

I played this game way back when at an arcade outside of Chicago. It was a test machine. You played as a human, but could turn into a dinosaur/creature during the match. I thought the game was not bad, but I only played it once and never saw it again.

there is one in california. It seems to be the best working and the only one with a fully-decked-out cabinet. If yours and the other stories about actually playing this game are true, then that machine is playable. Which means that it obviously isn't the one that got dumped into MAME, becuase this rom here works worse than shit.
Still, there is some hope, then... sort of.

What? In the bios mode, you can clearly see the names of the past fighters but in the character select, there is no dinosaur or gargantuan ape. WTF. Perhaps it was for the better than Primal Rage II never came out.

There ia another video up now showing the 8-non Necrosan monsters selectable. Necrosan is playable according to this video but I don't get how yet. He also got a stage select and the sfx to play.
And for the last time you guys, the humans are optional! Even if you got this select screen, you pick an avatar and then MORPH INTO THE GOD! It is not "human-centric," the humans are a tool used by the gods to circumvent Necrosan's evil voodoo spells. It's a plot point, not a handicap.

You actually did play as the humans on the select screen, at least in the version I played. Back in the 90's I was an arcade junkie and played several test machines, including Atari's "Freeze" as well as another Atari 3D fighter that I can't recall the name of.

Yeah exactly. From what I was told by a beta tester of the game, you could turn into the Animals at any point (even during combos). I think that would be really fun to play. You start off with a nice juggle of jump in combo, then morph into an animal mid-combo and give some heavy damage.

You know something just got me thinking. What if the reason why the original characters are in there is because they have to be in order for the Avatars to shapeshift properly. We may never know unless we get this rom completely operational. They could also be just placeholders for empty slots in the program. Dummy characters in otherwords. Of course I would really like to see if it is possible to rip sprites from the internal data of the rom with a software other than MAME.

I talked with a beta tester that actually played this game before it was canned and it is the way I stated. All the Avatars morphed into the previous characters in the game.
And yeah, that is a shame there isn't a way to dump all of the art out of it, or at least something else. It could be possible that there is a program but those types of things can be a pain to find.

How'd you get that MAME rom to work? I can't get it to work. All of the places I've been to to download the rom have been the same romfile and haven't worked. The emulator says it can't run it because a rom or other file are missing.
