That ( with all due respect ) You seem to be: a busy-body, left-wing, bleeding heart , hippy tree-hugger with far too much nose to stick in everybody else' business. Fact of the matter is: docking and cropping was going on way before you came along to "enlighten us" and will continue to go on well after we are gone; and generations of Doberman owners will have raised happy, healthy, well-adjusted K-9s without a moments doubt or guilt or care what "douche-bag" whiners have to say. Just saying....
All depends on the training & raising. My Dobie , Cinnamon gave hugs standing upright ,wrapping front legs around you ! I miss her with all my heart. She was 13 when she passed.
@thisnameisnottaken17 Absoloutely. What gives people the right to cut a dogs tail, ears or dew claw? Nothing. Declawing cats? Comeon. If it would be inhumane to cut off a paedophiles bits why would carving up a dog for looks be ok?
I am generally against most of the cosmetic procedures performed on animals, however there are some procedures that are beneficial depending of the lifestyle of the animal: removal of a dew claws at 2-3 days of age is much preferred to an animal that comes in on an emergency with its first digit half ripped off. As for declawing cats, it is acceptable in some situations, especially if it is the option of a home or an animal shelter…more to say, but out of space…
@jdahar Nope, not beneficial. Should I have my toes lopped off by someone with scissors and no pain killer just incase one day I break one? Seiously? If a person is requiring a declawed cat then they havent done the research into the problems this multi-amputation causes or perhaps they shouldn't be allowed a cat. These procedures are being outlawed in my country, it is a serious issue. In the UK now dogs that have been mutilated in these ways are not admissable to show .
@Nadimah...I understand the procedure for declawing at length and am against it most of the time but there are situations where telling the owner "no" can result in a shelter and euthanasia...An elderly person has had this cat 6+ years (not declawed) and is now moving into an assisted living facility that will not allow a cats that have claws...no one will take/watch the cat for this person...options: declaw or a overpopulated animal shelter (possible death)...a tough call esp. with an older cat
jdahar continued: All I am saying is there may be a time and a place for certain procedures...no issue is ever 100% cut and dry unless there are laws and regulations (and even then there can be issues)...
@NadimahElizabeth What give people the right to mutilate dogs or cats by spaying or Neutering? What gives parents the right to make the decision for circumcision??
@LOKISlog7 Nothing gives parents the right to circumcise. The world health org and american pediatric association agrees that it is pointless and cruel. Neutering pets -while unpleasant does help the overpopulatin of unwated animals who suffer .....not realy a good point mate.
@NadimahElizabeth Yet its done every day; on all corners of this earth; with nary a eyebrow raised by the left leaning element. Seems as though the tree huggers believe that cropping and docking is more an atrocity; than the physical mutilation of our young sons. For the record we have owned two breeds that were cropped and docked; our Female Boxer and Male Doberman. They both lived long; healthy, happy and well adjusted lives; and suffered no complications from the procedure.
@NadimahElizabeth This September we will welcome our second Doberman. We have yet to decide if it will be male or female. We have decided that we WON'T sexually mutilate our dog; but we have already made arrangements with our vet to dock and crop. We have full confidence in him; as he has performed hundreds of procedures without any complications or complaint from other dog owners. Just like our other two dogs; we know that our new puppy will be a happy and healthy member of our family.
for first time doberman/dog owners, is adopting an adult dog better or adopting a puppy. I was looking at a doberman adoption center in Georgia and they were very strict about who adopts these dogs. They recommended people without children...and that just kind of scared me just a little but I REALLY WANT ONE!! XD any advice?
buying a puppy will be better that way you can train it the way you want it and it will always know you thats what my brother did with his dog and shes the best dog we ever had =)
Some thieves came several times to my house and they always took what they wanted to, so I looked for a dog at dog shelters but couldn't found anyone big enough and when I was without hope and saying that I've always loved dobies 2 ladies told me that there was a homeless doberman at their neighborhood I couldn't belive how lucky I was, It was a dobie so I took her to my place and now she's my sweet 1 year old baby, no more thieves and I don't call to the police I have a DOBERMAN LOL
I get my dobies from Doberman Rescue; Dallas, TX, they do an excellent job of taking care of adoptions. My little old girls is going on 12 to 15 yrs old and has some problems never related to the ear. When I got her she was anywhere from 5 to 7 yrs. old and her ears were natural. Her health problem now are related to old age. I suggest to anyone wanting a Doberman to check out the rescue centers, just Google it up and there should be one close by to where you live.
Aesthetics r a matter of opinion. Function and health, however, r not. Those who whine--'cropping is so unnatural' Hmm--how's this 4 unnatural: U inbreed an animal (wolf, jackal, etc.) until their ears flop over, lengthen, so they r more prone to injuries and infections (yeast, etc.) muffles their hearing ability, and they cannot signal visual cues easily. If done correctly (not removing 2 much bell (base of ear) u r simply restoring a more natural state. Any floppy eared wild canines? NO.
cont.. I had 1 Doberman cropped and 1 that had no crop. The 1 with no crop (not cut) had pretty many ear infections the other 1 didn't have any. Also about the dew claws it's better that these are removed because Dobermans like to grab and tussle I'm sure it's a lot more painful to get a dew claw ripped off then cut off. These parts are removed from the dog for good reason not to cause pain.
Although I feel Dobermans are the best looking dogs out there. Their look is not really cosmetic it serves a purpose. Dobermans ears are cropped so there isn't as much for an aggressor to get a hold of same thing with the tail. Besides the function there is another good thing about cropping the ears. They hardly ever get ear infections because the ear canal always has air getting into it to keep it dry.
At :31 it shows the "four" types of dobermann. Gray, black and red. The grays have a skin mutation so theyr not quite right but i loved the one we used to have. And the albino one i dont know a lot about.
Actually, there is FAWN, RED, BLACK, and BLUE. All should have the markings. the blues r notorious for skin problems. Whites and albinos r not officially recognized.
I am getting a dobe next year, and I will be keeping her as natural as possible, with tail and ears intact. As she will not be a working dog, which is the reason why the cropping of the ears and docking of the tail was brought on, she will keep all of her parts! Except neutering, which the main benefit is to lesson the risk of cancer and problems with her "bits" later on in life. The photo on this video of the Dobe with the rose is beautiful and elegent and what I am going for! x
Here here! I love all dogs but I only owned and will only own Dobermans! I would make an exception for a few other "Dobie-ish" breeds but Dobermans just do it for me!
I work at a veterinary clinic and can give you some basic information. At our clinic both tail docking as well as dew claw removal is done at 2 to 3 days of age. There are no anesthetics and takes just a couple of minutes per pup. With dew claws the wound is cauterized and as for tails a few sutures close the wound. Some vets do use local blocks but it is generally viewed as unnecessary. I haven't had a lot of information on ear cropping because that practice is not preformed at our clinic.
They say that this breed is not good for first time dog owners. ive never owned a dog but have done lots of research on dogs and training. The only thing im somewhat confused about is this whole Alfa status thing. Is it something that i always have to be aware of and maintain at all times in order for it to stay obedient?
no if you just give the dobie a raised (not yelling) voice he will know you mean busniess. but whatever you do for the love of god do not hit the dog especally dobermans they are very sensitive dogs and will turn on you if you hit him enough he will basically say i have had enough of this your done. but that firm voice they know you are serious my doberman know im boss and it stays that way.
Ear cropping and tail docking is done under anesthesia and when done by an experience veterinarian, the recovery process is quick and for the most part painless. Like any healing, there will be discomfort but puppies are resilient.
It is done to preserve the breed standard. Is circumcision barbaric? I think not. Relatively speaking, it's the same concept.
