I remember listening to this when i was 10 on the radio. To hear Chick Hearn say in a rather sad voice "West comes down court and throws up an 89 footer "OH MY GOD IT WENT IN" was magic. Sad to say that Wilt did have his foot in. but it doesnt take away from the beauty of the moment.
I saw the game live when I was a kid. The crowd noise was incredible the moment the shot went in. The Lakers lost the game in overtime and eventually the series to the Knicks. My family had season tickets.
Remembered the legendary Laker announcer "live" on the radio as an "80 foot jumper", it's probably closer to 60 feet. Still think is the greatest shot ever. Jerry West actually shot the ball, NOT a desperation throw. Yes, the shot should not have counted, Wilt Chamberlain the inbound passer did have one foot inbound while he passed the ball to Jerrry West. Even the greatest makes mistakes!
definitely the best shot ever, given the circumstances and the difficulty. and the best part is his unitas-esque reaction to hitting the shot. jerry west was a basketball player, not some hot-shot, multi-millionaire *ss hole athlete who doesn't give a damn about the game and those who paved the way.
THANK YOU! I've been saying that for years.! Wilt Chamberlian had one foot still in bounds when he threw the ball to West. The shot should have never happend.
Well, true, but such a violation is never called in the last seconds, and it wasn't back in 1970 when the rules were much more strictly applied. It's called swallowing the whistle. I'm glad the whistle was swallowed on this play. The irony of "Mr. Clutch" draining this bomb was remarkable at the time, and hasn't diminished much over they decades. Jerry really was a "clutch" shooter.
Well, one of the best then, surely. Oscar was pretty damn good, too. I grew up watching Jerry, but I can't say he was better than The Big O. On the other hand, I won't say that
The Big O was better than Jerry, either. Jerry's teams were much more successful; but then again, from 62 on the Royals were in the Eastern Division, with the Celts,'Sixers, etc. In the end, I guess all we can say is that both Jerry and Oscar were beautiful players, each unique and wonderful.
Best shot evr.

Would you all shut up & give Jerry West the credit he deserves.
That was a great shot eventhough it should not have counted.

Great shot by Jerry, but is shouldn't of counted. The player who threw the ball to Jerry had 1 foot in and 1 foot out -of bounds. Check it out!

It should be called. No other sports let things go away cuz it's "in the last seconds".
