Take a look at the end, you need to look close, not to close, but the cougar has the wolf practically in a choke hold, the wolf's body is completely turned away form the cougar, unable to reach with it's paws or head, because the cougars body weight and paws our keeping the wolf in a lock hold, all the cougar needs to do from there is bite the wolf on its neck and rip the mane artery. @Kopelus Cats are more agile, acrobatic and muscular than canines, moreover they have an added advantage and one of the biggest defensive/offensive weapons in the animal kingdom, claws. I would take 2 full wolves over a single full grown puma. Even if a puma could consistently outmuscle and outwrestle the first wolf it's flanks would be open to savage attacks from the second. The puma just doesn't have the quick neck breaking kill capability of a Tiger or Lion.

Yes, I've seen a fighting dog VS a lion, several times. Every single time the lion had its claws and teeth removed and was sedated, and it STILL took several dogs to kill the lion, who was usually too young to even have its mane yet. If you studied biology and anatomy like I did you would know how much stronger cats are compared to dogs.
Cougars have many more tools to take care (take out) of dogs! They outweigh a wolf and their claws make fast work of eyes, ears stomachs etc. No match. A Jaguar is even more ferocious.

@meinsnailen Sorry, absolutely no dog will have a chance against one of these. My Uncle's Mastiff (about the size of a cougar) got ripped to pieces when it went outside. The cougar hopped the fence and took the dog as an easy meal. It's not safe to keep your pets unmonitored in areas with cougars.
@2tough2beat I've seen one of those "cougar killings" in person. They capture a cougar and keep it for a few days while giving it no food and only water. They then sedate the cougar, remove its nails and teeth and put it in the cage with a dog who's also hungry but not starving. When I watched it, they had to release another dogo into the cage to kill the cougar cause the one dogo couldn't do it, despite the cougar being in a heavily weakened state. Again, studied anatomy. I know how this works.

The wolf has a different fighting style and obviously lives in the wild which gives it a harder life, but it wouldn't easily overpower a mastiff at all. Hell, it takes an entire wolf pack to kill an adult male wild boar (which is extremely rare as they are usually found in groups) even though wild pigs certainly aren't weak animals.

It's usually the dominant male cub who carries on his own pack and the lesser brothers search to start another pack, they even sometimes work together to find females.
Wolves are very much like humans in this regard, that's why we are able to build strong bonds with their domestic breeds and we feel such an affection towards them.

Why is everyone hating on wolves. A pack of wolves is one of the most powerful forces in nature, and certainly in there ecosystem. A wolf is a pack animal, a cougar is a solitary animal. They have evolved much differently. Put a cougar in a pit with a pack of wolves, see what happens.

I think out of 10 fights it would be a draw or slightly favouring the cougar since it has the advantage of claws for extra and potentialy decisive/more crippling damage. But unlike wolves, cats are quick killers. Cats usually lack the stamina for long fights, if it aint a quick kill, the cat looses. Also experience and sheer luck play a major role.

Really is that why there are documented cases of wolves killing cougars? Is that why packs of wolves have reportedly killed yellow stone bears? Get over it...Brown bears, cougars and grey wolves are all apex predators that have all killed each other.

@FOS921 felines generally tend more towards self preservation, as well as bears. wolves tend to be much more persistent. if it came down to it though, the cougar is the likely winner. and while plenty of bears have run from cougars.. if it came down to it.. the cougar would likely be killed.
Actually, numbers of cougars are declining in Yellowstone, cause of the return of wolves. They are no match for a pack of wolves. One on one I think the cougar is stronger, but mostly cougars ran off to avoid injury.
This is the same in Africa and Asia where wild dogs chase away leopards.

How is a cat emo? Wolves and dogs are also killers, they hunt for food. Cougars and cat's are just as smart as dogs, if not smarter. A cougar can take care of itself, but a wolf lives in a pack. Not only that but cats in general are more agile, this is because of their body and spine structure, a house cat is able to rotate half of its body almost completely around, this is why they are able to jump off high places, and fit through small holes.

Probably not, a cougar has more muscles and weight on it's side. There is no way that a single wolf not even the quickest one in the world can beat a cougar. I don't even think that three or four wolves could beat a cougar. I would take 2 full wolves over a single full grown puma. Even if a puma could consistently outmuscle and outwrestle the first wolf it's flanks would be open to savage attacks from the second. The puma just doesn't have the quick neck breaking kill capability of a Tiger or Lion.
It's a question of evolution, Cats evolved as solitary ambush and sprint predators while wolves/wild dogs evolved for pack oriented endurance hunting. BTW this video is totally fake.

Considering I have seen a house cat (approx 4.5 kg) keep a dog in this case about (25 kg) at bay it's no riddle that a cougar would kick the wolfs butt.
I think male cougar weigh between 60 and 100 kg.
Try maybe a kangal dog, it might have a remote chance.

@meinsnailen Sorry, absolutely no dog will have a chance against one of these. My Uncle's Mastiff (about the size of a cougar) got ripped to pieces when it went outside. The cougar hopped the fence and took the dog as an easy meal. It's not safe to keep your pets unmonitored in areas with cougars.

@2tough2beat I've seen one of those "cougar killings" in person. They capture a cougar and keep it for a few days while giving it no food and only water. They then sedate the cougar, remove its nails and teeth and put it in the cage with a dog who's also hungry but not starving. When I watched it, they had to release another dogo into the cage to kill the cougar cause the one dogo couldn't do it, despite the cougar being in a heavily weakened state. Again, studied anatomy. I know how this works.

@LinkDrako Having worked around both wolves and cougars in sanctuaries, I can tell you that the only circumstances that a single wolf would ever kill a cougar is if it was a small cub or if it was sick and could barely move. Cougars are 5-7 times stronger than an average adult man while a wolf actually has about the same strength as an adult man. Combine that with their claws, more powerful bite and faster reflexes and you've got yourself a winner. (continued)

The wolf has a different fighting style and obviously lives in the wild which gives it a harder life, but it wouldn't easily overpower a mastiff at all. Hell, it takes an entire wolf pack to kill an adult male wild boar (which is extremely rare as they are usually found in groups) even though wild pigs certainly aren't weak animals.

It's usually the dominant male cub who carries on his own pack and the lesser brothers search to start another pack, they even sometimes work together to find females.
Wolves are very much like humans in this regard, that's why we are able to build strong bonds with their domestic breeds and we feel such an affection towards them.

Why is everyone hating on wolves. A pack of wolves is one of the most powerful forces in nature, and certainly in there ecosystem. A wolf is a pack animal, a cougar is a solitary animal. They have evolved much differently. Put a cougar in a pit with a pack of wolves, see what happens.

I think out of 10 fights it would be a draw or slightly favouring the cougar since it has the advantage of claws for extra and potentialy decisive/more crippling damage. But unlike wolves, cats are quick killers. Cats usually lack the stamina for long fights, if it aint a quick kill, the cat looses. Also experience and sheer luck play a major role.

Actually, numbers of cougars are declining in Yellowstone, cause of the return of wolves. They are no match for a pack of wolves. One on one I think the cougar is stronger, but mostly cougars ran off to avoid injury.
This is the same in Africa and Asia where wild dogs chase away leopards.
