  • "....how was that, was that cool?....", Oh yes! that was very cool!

  • You need the patience of a saint to work with some of these people...When I was doing sessions, my mantra was"They are paying me $37.50 an hour to play whatever they want me to with a 3 hour minimum"....We used to look at each other at times and wonder "What the Fuck"....Working with Spector taught me to put up with goddam near anything, so the rest was easy.

  • @tmf945 please post more info on spector, and what you where involved in,very interesting.

  • Carl's voice is like an angel's....so beautiful

  • "How was that? That was cool" Yes that was a very cool video. Thank you, I was entertained and I learned something too. This is YouTube's finest material.

  • i've been listening to the recently released "smile sessions," and as gorgeous and inventive as pet sounds was it's almost ridiculous how much better the smile material was than pet sounds. i'd say the closest songs to compare would be "god only knows" and "surf's up" and this doesn't come anywhere close to the sheer beauty of surf's up. especially the second half.

  • Yeah, that's what I understood. So, George Martin and Brian are simply occupying the same new ideas independently?

  • @vcx9dfne Both groups were looking for more sophistication in their music and went toward a more baroque sensibility to their writing and production at around the same time...but did so in completely different ways.

I really don't find many similarities between the "sound-space" of Eleanor Rigby and God Only Knows. ER uses a string octet only, with no other instruments. GOK uses piano, harpsichord, string bass, two electric basses, guitar, strings, french horn, flutes, drums and percussion.

  • @BehindTheSounds ..and uses them in a unique manner-not to be labeled 'baroque, or classical'!

  • @hippojuice23 I don't like using labels either, but Baroque Pop is definitely a sub genre of 60's music that both the Beatles and Beach Boys fall into.

  • Weird. Never though much about "Pet Sounds" although I heard the rap. After watching this, I'm hearing "Sgt. Peppers." Unfortunately, I'm also hearing "Eleanor Rigby" which came earlier, I think, but the timing is difficult, I understand. But the idea is the same, this multi-sonic creation. I don't mean anyone is copying anyone, only that a similar sound-space is going on.

  • @vcx9dfne "Eleanor Rigby" was recorded shortly after Pet Sounds was in the can and wasn't released until August of 1966. Pet Sounds was not influenced by anything on Revolver.

  • @BehindTheSounds And Smile would have been before Sgt Pepper if Brian had everything together like he had on Pet Sounds. He (Brian) put them well well ahead of the game for a time there.

  • @vcx9dfne Smoke a fatty and listen to Don't Talk! :)

  • "How's that - was that cool?"

    Yeah it was...

  • Is Mike on this at all?

  • @ScottSilverman1 Signs point to no. I think Al and Dennis are audible in parts of the group section at 6:52 but even that is suspect. It's mainly Carl, Brian and Bruce on this track.

  • oh my... Thank God for protools... I used to complain about all my takes... this is wearing me out just by listening to it...

  • Let me add my thanks for creating this fascinating piece. I was very young when this was released but even then could sense it was in a different league; having spent time in recording studios in the past I could almost feel the anxiety coming back! Hal Blaine and the Crew just defy words - what and era....

  • Does anyone know where I can find the handwritten score from that appears at 5:40. Obviously, I don't want the actual thing, I just want the image file. For some reason I feel like I want that SO BAD

  • This is BEAUTIFUL. Thank you for the posting (parts 1 and 2).

  • excellent job once again . so very nice to know that a community of musically informed people still hold this staggeringly beautiful body of work in such high regard . 45 years later it is still as great as ever . thanks guys .

  • love this - visually brilliant too - great use of photographs.

  • thanks for all your work putting this together. Really loving all the insight and of course amazing music. Keep up the good work...A

  • Aah, thank you for this! Beautiful!

  • WOW! Love this...thanks for putting it together for us.

  • "How was that was that cool?" No Bruce...it was the most beautiful thing i hav ever heard. Ive been waiting for this for a long time finally its here thank u for sharing all this.

  • "too jerky" it's called slurssssss

  • Been waiting 2 years for this! Thank you!

  • These videos are great! Thanks for putting them together. :-)

  • I can't thank you enough for the Great Work you did putting this and the other BB clips together. What is your background to depict all of this info ? I write Carol Kaye all of the time, but you seem to know every pulse that was generated during these sessions. GOD BLESS YOU and yours.

  • Thanks soo much for creating this and posting. I've been waiting for this video for a LONG time. I wrote an essay on this song in University for an American Popular Music course I took and I also showed your video of Wouldn't It Be Nice to the class. It was very well received and I think I made a few more Brian Wilson/Beach Boys fans out of the class. Thanks again.

I've been mulling making my own studio sessions video for some of the other BB's hits...which program did you use?

  • @iferraro I use Sony Vegas for video editing.

  • Thanks for doing these videos again, I thought production had stopped! Please, keep them coming. They are really interesting.

  • Just back from LA for the first time where i went to Western and Sunset Sound (outside only) so perfect timing for this video. Keep em coming

  • so sublme. You outdid yourself.

    Heartfelt thanks.

  • --> Good to see Carl Fortina ;o)

  • Oh you made my night - Yeaaaaaaaaaaah!

  • 3:59 something in the background maybe off mike. Or maybe like me just imbedded in our mind? Interesting listening though. Beautiful song and you can easily understand why Paul McCartney loved this song.

  • Thank you very much for posting with great audio!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Part 2 was like waiting for SMiLE to be released. Thank you so much for not abandoning this project! Keep up the awesome work!

  • Brain was the best brother you could ever wish for, he gave the lead vocal to his brother Carl... "the voice of the angle's" Most likely there finest moment.

  • Excellent as usual... but I have to question Carl's 12-string credit, as the AFM sheet lists neither him, or indeed any guitar whatsoever. Furthermore, there's no guitar (6- or 12- string) audible on the track.

  • @AGD55

    there's a guitar audible around 3:20

  • @JDrevolver66

    right channel.

  • @AGD55 I'm not 100% positive about the Carl credit, but there is definitely a 12-string audible at times and Carl often went unlisted on the AFM sheets.

  • haha, "forget it pal"

  • @JuxtaposeMystery He's saying "Forget it, Hal"

  • Been waiting for this video for a long long long time. worth it.

  • The long wait was still worth it. Thanks!

  • finally!!!! thank you for uploading this

  • 4:21 - those flutes, hands down, are probably the greatest sound in any song I have ever heard. Thanks for making yet another incredible vid!

Any chance you'll do the same type of video for the SMiLE sessions?

  • @rab2591 I have no plans to do anything for the Smile sessions at the moment. IMO, the nature of how the songs were recorded is just way too complex to make videos like these. "Heroes And Villains" alone makes me crazy just thinking about it. I might change my mind once the Smile Sessions box comes out.

I am thinking about covering "Trombone Dixie" and "Good Vibrations" as bonus episodes though.

  • @BehindTheSounds Yes, definitely do Good Vibrations! That's their most famous song and would garner the most interest from listeners. I think doing SMILE tracks would be too obscure for most. Thanks so much for doing another video. I only found your channel recently, so the wait wasn't as long as it was for others.

  • I swear I think I can hear Brian singing in the backround off mike at 3:35 and beyond. Does anyone else hear him?

  • @angelachannel It could be tape bleed (Though I don't think the tape of the original tracking session ever had vocals recorded over it). I honestly don't hear anything.

I also want to point out here that the alternate version that is labeled as having a lead by Brian is actually just an alternate vocal by Carl. I suspect Brian might have recorded a scratch vocal, but such a recording has never been found.

  • @BehindTheSounds Thanks for the scoop. I wonder if anyone else hears it? We are actually hoping we get to see Brian perform here in Atlanta @ Chastain Park and want Angela to experience him. From watching Brian in old & new interviews I have to say he is special in that he speaks from his heart with honesty and no facade. It's almost a purity of sorts that is so wonderful to see. God Bless Brian Wilson & family.

  • @BehindTheSounds amazing sonic scholarship. I've been fooled by the so-called Brian-vocal version: sure does sound like Brian Wilson--whose own vocal abilities in his prime will always remain underestimated. Carl was born to sing God Only Knows. I doubt Brian asked Tony Asher if he _really_ thought Carl should sing what they knew was a "classic song" out of simple vanity. He knew he could have. He probably has in another universe. And it's perfect in its own way

  • Me too! Thanks so much for this.

  • ha, never thought i'd see this, thanks!

  • YAYY!!! Thanks for posting the rest!!!

  • I've been looking forward to this for quite some time! Thanks for posting!
