Barrel raceing is one of thoughs sports that can somtimes be won because a horsehas been hyper trained to do the patter blinddingly fast that it dosn`t matter who rides them they just do it when they see three barrels and an areana, i`ve sean a girl who`s feet were to short to even kick her horse and she just leaned up the horse`s neack AND SHE WON but it is not easy with other horses, i admit i don`t barrel race, but i admier thpughs that do , english = western i ride both

Horse riding is something that is for everyone to enjoy, and no one has the right to say which discipline is better than the others. I do pretty much a bit of everything, barrel raceing, ropeing, cutting, reining, jumping, dressage, english, eventing, bareback, and some freestyle :) lol but i can tell you each one of them is a different experience and none of them are the best, people have their prefferences but that doesnt make them right. They are entitled to their opinon but EVERYONE is.
I love running barrels. In my 1st rodeo i got 19.27 seconds. That got me 5th place in the JRS. But i'm betting i can get like a 17 second run now. lol Nice vid!! You had some really nice pics in there. Keep up the awesome work

Hey there is nothing wrong with people who rides western. Heck lets see a english rider try to cut a cow without holding on the to saddle horn. The horse I ride you would be on the ground in know time. If you try to cut a cow with her she is that good and very quick come to cutting cows. English is for rich snobby people.

These comments are just too stupid to read. Either you can ride, or you can't. A horn won't hold you on, it is for balance. Riding English in a circle indoors is silly. Riding out doors where anything can happen takes some skill. But on the other hand jumping isn't for sissies either. Some of my worst wreaks have been turning barrels and roping.
By the way "Horselover1494". id pay to see you run Full gallop after a crazed steer, rope it, while staying in the saddle, aiming and roping the steer. then slaming the brakes on and jumping off to tie of the steer. i have heard it said that barrel racing is competing on the verge of recklessness. it is easy to be in complete control around the edge of the ring. but to take a horse at break neck and turn three drums in 14 to 16 seconds takes skill and courage. an english horse is really not as well trained as a western horse. you out rein an english horse you neck a western horse. and horns are really only used in turns to keep you from throwing your horse off balance. but if u r scared say u r scared.

I don't think it's fair to call english rider's whimps. In western, you could crash into a barrel or your horse could fall on the turn. In English, you could hit a cross-country jump, or have a horse stop and go straight over it's head. And in both, your horse could spook, buck, rear etc. And you critise us for wearing helmets? Ok everyone who is fighting over which is better between jumping and barrels are immature. I do both. My horse is a 19 year old, ex racer, ex 3 day eventing champion, Canadian Thoroughbred gelding and guess what we jump and run barrels. We are just starting barrels but he was previously trained for it. If we can do it so can everyone else. I love both. You don't HAVE to choose one over the other. Geez grow up people! Both are hard to do.
Exactly! Me and my 15 year old Arabian mare do barrels and 3 ft. jumps and I have NEVER abused her! Not everyone who does jumping or barrel racing abuses their horses. It totally depends on the person.

I definitly agree with you. Jumping is horribly dangerous and I've seen many abusive jumpers. I'll never put a horse through jumping, I've done it before and wish I hadn't.

I ride my horse both as I said before. If my horse didn't like jumping he wouldn't do it, if it hurt him he wouldn't do it. I can't force my 1150lb TB gelding to do anything he doesn't want to do, he can easily overpower me. I know he enjoys it because guess what he jumps out of the arena on his own when we are free lunging and the arena fence is 4'6" at least. He loves it and will continue to do what he loves until he no longer wants to and then he will tell me and I will stop. It isn't abuse.
Any time a 1150 pound animal jumps and lands on his two front legs, legs that have tiny joints in comparison to the rest of its body, it damages cartilage in the joint. You don't have to be an abusive rider and your horse doesn't have to not like it for it to be dangerous...
But running your horse full speed at a barrel and then having them slam on the brakes to pivot around the barrel then shove off towards the next one isn't hard on them...Anything a horse does is hard on it, my horse is 20 years old, he has been jumping since he was 4, up to 5 feet cross country and he is perfectly fine, never been lame in his legs. I just don't think that it can be called abuse because it is dangerous. Everything you do in life is dangerous, everything.
A good barrel horse collects before a barrel, they don't slam on the brakes. There's a thing called "checking" in barrel racing, which readies them for the turn. And as far as the horse pivoting and shoving off, what would a horse do if it needed to run from a predator? Pivot away from the predator and shove off to run away...
Ok bringing up predetors, in the wild in the forest where trees do fall quite often what would a horse do if it was being chased and came to a fallen tree...jump it, imagine that. Everything we humans do with horses IS HARD ON THEM. Considering they were wild before we got ahold of them, they were never meant to be used like we use them but if they were in pain or didn't want to do it they wouldn't.
Unless we're talking Redwoods, the logs would not be as tall as some of these rediculous jumps the horses are asked to jump. They also wouldn't be jumping as much. It's like 4x4Girl said, it's more about the person riding than the sport being done. As long as you're properly maintaining your horse for what its doing than it should be okay.

For all you idiots out there that say barrel racing is "abuse" have you ever ridden a barrel horse? These horses love what they do and are trained to do it. My horse(who can run under 17 seconds without a fuss) and most barrel horses i know can run the pattern without a rider or without reins. If you want to say that rodeo and barrel racing is abuse, go hard, but if you really want to know what it's about grow a pair, get off your pedistal and go try to run in under 16 seconds.

Both have risks.The saddle horn isnt even there for you to hold onto, its there to A) for a barrel/pole bending competition saddle to help you give the horse the command to tuck its butt under for the turn, B) for roping & trail saddles to carry equipment.Horse people are horse people and you both take risks when you mount a 1400lbs animal.Save the smack

Hey there is nothing wrong with people who rides western. Heck lets see a english rider try to cut a cow without holding on the to saddle horn. The horse I ride you would be on the ground in know time. If you try to cut a cow with her she is that good and very quick come to cutting cows. English is for rich snobby people.

These comments are just too stupid to read. Either you can ride, or you can't. A horn won't hold you on, it is for balance. Riding English in a circle indoors is silly. Riding out doors where anything can happen takes some skill. But on the other hand jumping isn't for sissies either. Some of my worst wreaks have been turning barrels and roping.

By the way "Horselover1494". id pay to see you run Full gallop after a crazed steer, rope it, while staying in the saddle, aiming and roping the steer. then slaming the brakes on and jumping off to tie of the steer. WE DO NOT HOLD THE HORN, WE USE IT!!!! ya some barrels racers hold the horn but thats beacuse they can't ride. But they still have a heck of a lot more guts then you!!!!

Western riders cannot ride. They have a horn on their saddle because they always have to hang on or else they'll fall off.

i have heard it said that barrel racing is competing on the verge of recklessness. it is easy to be in complete control around the edge of the ring. but to take a horse at break neck and turn three drums in 14 to 16 seconds takes skill and courage. an english horse is really not as well trained as a western horse. you out rein an english horse you neck a western horse. and horns are really only used in turns to keep you from throwing your horse off balance. but if u r scared say u r scared.

true, but in english your jumping 5ft or higher, at practically a gallop
and english horses are obviously well trained. you cant just point a green horse at a 4ft oxer line and assume it's easy enough for it to understand exactly what to do.
both sports (BR and jumping) and all equine sports for that matter, take large amounts of training

excuse me. did you seriously just say that? hahaha. wow. the horn isn't for just hanging on. in roping you dally the freakin rope.. hmm.. don't think there is any hangin on there. when we grab it in barrels it helps position us to help the horse make the turn. don't say we can't ride. i'd like to see you ride a damn barrel horse and then you talk about us western riders. and i've been bucked off several times. the horn doesn't help you hang on. sorry to burst your bubble.

I don't think it's fair to call english rider's whimps. In western, you could crash into a barrel or your horse could fall on the turn. In English, you could hit a cross-country jump, or have a horse stop and go straight over it's head. And in both, your horse could spook, buck, rear etc. And you critise us for wearing helmets? Believe it or not, we value our lives; if you CAN protect yourself, then why shouldn't you? Ok, so we can't rope a cow, so what? Bet we can do things you can't aswell.

why are barrel racers and jumpers always fighting my best friends are jumpers NO jk and ima true to god dead set whole hearted barrel racer and we always have fun!!!! its kinda rude on both sides and horse world to down each other whats the big deal 2 all my fellow barrel racers dont try to be bigger just let them down them selfs!!!!

Ok everyone who is fighting over which is better between jumping and barrels are immature. I do both. My horse is a 19 year old, ex racer, ex 3 day eventing champion, Canadian Thoroughbred gelding and guess what we jump and run barrels. We are just starting barrels but he was previously trained for it. If we can do it so can everyone else. I love both. You don't HAVE to choose one over the other. Geez grow up people! Both are hard to do.

Exactly! Me and my 15 year old Arabian mare do barrels and 3 ft. jumps and I have NEVER abused her! Not everyone who does jumping or barrel racing abuses their horses. It totally depends on the person.

people that think jumpers r little preps or bitches rnot jumping is just as hard as barrel racing and a few fences u have to no when and 6 ft is hard. plus both r dangoures if u make 1 wrong move in barrel racing u r screwed same as jumping. i do both with my horse that does both & i am not stuck up. plus i think people that thinkother types of riders r snobs or bitches i think that those r the type of people that need to grow up big time. and falling of hurts the same for all riders.

everybody who says jumping isn't abuse is wrong because i've seen plenty of horses die because there rider makes the wrong move so yeah jumping is more dangerous but then again so is barrel racing but i barrel race so i have to agree with everybody that jumping is worse!!!

I definitly agree with you. Jumping is horribly dangerous and I've seen many abusive jumpers. I'll never put a horse through jumping, I've done it before and wish I hadn't.

I ride my horse both as I said before. If my horse didn't like jumping he wouldn't do it, if it hurt him he wouldn't do it. I can't force my 1150lb TB gelding to do anything he doesn't want to do, he can easily overpower me. I know he enjoys it because guess what he jumps out of the arena on his own when we are free lunging and the arena fence is 4'6" at least. He loves it and will continue to do what he loves until he no longer wants to and then he will tell me and I will stop. It isn't abuse.

Any time a 1150 pound animal jumps and lands on his two front legs, legs that have tiny joints in comparison to the rest of its body, it damages cartilage in the joint. You don't have to be an abusive rider and your horse doesn't have to not like it for it to be dangerous...

But running your horse full speed at a barrel and then having them slam on the brakes to pivot around the barrel then shove off towards the next one isn't hard on them...Anything a horse does is hard on it, my horse is 20 years old, he has been jumping since he was 4, up to 5 feet cross country and he is perfectly fine, never been lame in his legs. I just don't think that it can be called abuse because it is dangerous. Everything you do in life is dangerous, everything.

A good barrel horse collects before a barrel, they don't slam on the brakes. There's a thing called "checking" in barrel racing, which readies them for the turn. And as far as the horse pivoting and shoving off, what would a horse do if it needed to run from a predator? Pivot away from the predator and shove off to run away...

Ok bringing up predetors, in the wild in the forest where trees do fall quite often what would a horse do if it was being chased and came to a fallen tree...jump it, imagine that. Everything we humans do with horses IS HARD ON THEM. Considering they were wild before we got ahold of them, they were never meant to be used like we use them but if they were in pain or didn't want to do it they wouldn't.

Unless we're talking Redwoods, the logs would not be as tall as some of these rediculous jumps the horses are asked to jump. They also wouldn't be jumping as much. It's like 4x4Girl said, it's more about the person riding than the sport being done. As long as you're properly maintaining your horse for what its doing than it should be okay.

For all you idiots out there that say barrel racing is "abuse" have you ever ridden a barrel horse? These horses love what they do and are trained to do it. My horse(who can run under 17 seconds without a fuss) and most barrel horses i know can run the pattern without a rider or without reins. If you want to say that rodeo and barrel racing is abuse, go hard, but if you really want to know what it's about grow a pair, get off your pedistal and go try to run in under 16 seconds.

wow this is a really cool video, I am not really a barrel racer yet, but after 8 years of riding hunters, I bought a 3 year old filly. And with some help (or a lot) I am training her barrels and she loves it. It makes me so happy to actually watch people doing it :)
