  • A rule of thumb is 3-7 years. We have seen resin go bad in less than 12 months with high levels if chlorine.

  • We have a tank size that will tell you how much resin goes in each tank.

As far as type of resin I try and keep it simple

    1. Standard resin works well for most homes and businesses.

    2. Fine mesh resin works well for well water with clear water iron up to about 6-8 parts per million or mg/l.

    3. SST 60 resin is extremely efficient and allows you to save on salt costs and reduces water consumption.

    4. 10% cross linked resin is designed to hold up better to high chlorine water.

  • Decent general review of this particular process that looks quite "do-able" by a good DIYer. QUESTIONS: Is there some spec or rule of thumb or a standard quantity of resin to refill? Based on tank height tank volume or some percentage of fill? How is the resin chosen? Are there different types of resins or do all softeners use the same type? When should one consider replacing the resin? Thanks.

  • What is the gravel for? Is it limestone? I am about to rebed one of these units. I emptied it and there was no gravel. How full of media should the resin tank be filled?

  • This a great, thank you. I just received my system from GWS and this is helpful in setting it up. Now, I need one of those funnels ...

  • Can I just install the media filter with out the brine tank ?

I just want the Iron filter ..

and I dont like soft water ..

    Please advise .. thanks !

  • @MrMicraphone If you have a softener, resin needs to be regenerated to actually get rid of Iron. Otherwise, a Backwash Filter (Fleck DID make these, unsure whether they still have them), which skips softening, might help. These are filters that clean themselves (or flush away rubbish..

  • @airconguy1 Thanks !

  • @MrMicraphone Your welcome. the website "softenerparts . com" sells the control heads for the Fleck 5600SF (backwash filter model). It backwashes on days set with the skipper wheel.
