@Crisgo3d haha with no restrictor plates those cars could do some crazy things, often the leader of the race would put people in the top 5 a lap down!
WRONG FRIEND. I was there also (my first race), I was sitting right behind you in Roberts (by the wheelchair platform), I was 11, and I was the biggest Pearson fan. My dad loved Cale, and my brother dug Petty. Used to go in a rambler, then a 65 buick skylark convertible and park at a Bates Motel looking place past the dogtrack down by the First Turn (or was it the Post Time Bar...I forget). Don't follow the sport anymore...too many whining millionaire crybabies today. But back then....priceless
I was there (front row, Fireball Roberts grandstand) ... I was 14 years old ... I was also the #1 DAVID PEARSON fan!! My mother was a #1 Richard Petty fan ... LOL!! I remember when Richard passed David on the last lap saying out loud, "If Richard Petty wins this race, I'll never hear the end of it!"
In this finish Ken Squier is in the main booth, Barney Hall is in Turn One, I do not know who is on the backstretch, and Dave Despain is in Turn Four.
This was the year that Petty won the championship with the most screwed up points system ever.

The video was from "Wide World Of Sports", which videotaped and edited the race for later showing (probably the next Saturday).

@altfactor Keith Jackson's commentary earlier in this broadcast notes the Talladega 500 "tomorrow" - indicating this was aired August 10, 1974.

There were actually restrictor plates in this race, FYI.

@Sunoco There were restrictor plates in the 500 in February, but by this race Petty and Pearson were running 358 engines and they weren't plated.

Nascar parody - the top 5 consists of a Mercury, a Dodge, a Ford, a Chevy, & an AMC!
