3.5 hrs. Charging time is what it takes to fill this electric car! I can hardly wait to be late for everything. Sorry boss, couldn’t find a plugin on the freeway. Had to call a tow truck again. Sorry boss, I had to fill up my electric car this morning, the wife forgot to plug it in last night. I could get rich being a taxi driver. It takes oil in a gas turbine to generate the electricity that charges this thing. How does that save the planet? They must think were idiots to not know that.
I really hope this becomes a standard car practice. I saw a Tesla car for the first time today and tried following it for as long as I could. Amazing car and probably the only car company that really cares about pushing forward a car that not only uses greater technology but also is environmentally friendly.
I really hope I can make this my next car purchase.
Why don't they just make the battery swapable! Drive into a gas station, park on top of the "swap area" a device removes your batter from underneath and replaces it with a fully charged unit. Presto. No wacky power boxes with special extension chords.
This was before they made plans with Better Place. They started this venture a couple of years ago. They were just held back because no one could make a transmission strong enough to handle the electric motor. Take a look at the Model S from Tesla. They incorporated it with swap technology. But I don't think they adjusted the price for the leasing of the battery. I hope they lease the battery and use the swap stations. That would be great or use the Better Place method of prepaid miles.
the battery pack of the origional tesla roadster weighed 1,000 pounds which would b kinda hard to "just swwap out". Now there are battery types such as A-123 which can charge in as little as 5 min and run significantly longer at a higher output than standard lithium and far better than lead acid. Honestly i dont understand y other car industries havent tried to make a true electric car, especially when they can accelerate faster than any gasoline engine (when done properly) are on par for cost.
Other car industries don't see a huge demand yet. Just wait. When Tesla and Better Place hit California with full force, the demand for EVs will be huge.
I know there are fast charging batteries, but the cost has to be affordable. With the swap station, you can the make the EVs cheaper than gas powered cars.
The Roadster wasn't designed to swap batteries. The Model S is. If you place the batteries on the bottom of the car, the battery swap machine will do all the work. Imagine, when you are going a long drive. You stop at the swap station. You just drive in to the swap station. The machine does all the work. You don't have to pump or smell anything terrible.
And where exactly will all these swap stations be?? That's the only thing I have against this and electric cars in general, we live in a non-stop always moving society where we stop, fill up on gas, and keep going. Will charging and/or swapping be that hassle free?? I think that's the only way electric cars will fully catch on with the public
I agree with you. The convenience has to be there in order for EVs to be more mainstream. Currently they are building more charging spots in California. San Francisco is getting more charging spots.
The swap stations will be along the freeways. About every 50 miles apart, I think. That is the current plan.
Hmm okay cool. Well..we'll have to see how swapping works in general...but just how often will swapping be able to be done? I mean I'm sure this will work out for some families...but even in my case for example I just like the peace of mind knowing I can just get up...go...fill up in less than 5 mins...then go again..See what I mean
So I'm having a hard time seeing how EVs will work out even with advancements..call me a skeptic lol..but we'll see
Good point. But once again that depends also on how you drive. With the Roadster for example several reviewed it saying you'd have to drive it "gingerly" to get reasonable range. Second...I'm not disagreeing with the notion of traveling less than 100 miles on a daily commute. That is true. But like I asked before how often can you swap? What if you forget something at home and you have to turn back around..wasting more mileage? Can EV's really be as "fill up and go" as gas powered cars? Idk....
The reason because car companies haven't developed electric cars is because of the gas. The greed of the stupid oilowners blew the electric dream away (but the electric cars are finally getting good!)
There's already batteries with charge times of 10mins (Toshiba Scib) and EEstor claim to have capacitor battery, who's charge time depends more on how much power you can dump into it, rather than the battery itself... developing a power infrastructure for electricity charging will certainly be easier than for hydrogen the current alternative,,,

The target market is California, currently.

You got to ask these questions. If the product doesn't meet the customers demands, it will fail.
If you could travel at least 100 miles on a charge, it will meet most people's demands for daily commute. Seats at least 5 people.
For extended range, you can use the swap stations. Actually the latest tests show less than 2 minute change.
Using the Better Place swap stations or charging stations, you can go on short commutes or long ones. And on American made energy.

You can swap the batteries as often as you like. You are paying per mile and not per switch.
The batteries being used can be charged in 22 minutes. Or Tesla's model S in 45 minutes.
Being able to swap a battery in 2 minutes is fast enough.
I would rather pay my money to domestically produced energy. Instead of a foreign hostile nation.
