Saw the John Paul Jones Trio twice in the Philadelphia area in these years when he was touring to support his two solo albums "Zooma" & "The Thunderthief"- they are really great for all who have not heard them. On Robert Fripp's Discipline Label. The shows were killer.
I was lucky enough to meet him a few years back when he played the sheperds bush empire. He was on the Zooma tour, he just strolled up to go inside. I saw him and tried to act all cool. Had a nice chat with him. A real gent. Signed my ticket for me. He was chuffed I said i liked the album. After a while he said bye and went in, it was then people realised who he was but it was too late he had gone. Very under rated bloke.
seems like john paul jones enjoys his life through music regardless of the rock star lifestyle the fame and money which he lived with the zeps. he looks as happy and fulfilled here as he was back in his 'glory days'. a true musician with a true love for music
@antihax91 I was just comparing them to a God....Led Zeppelin was God playing Rock...nothing wrong with the rest. When the bar is so High...there is disparity
I love JPJ well I like anything the that John Paul Jones, Robert Plant and Jimmy page do however great they are apart I mean the 3 of them together now that would make it kind of complete. Its missing page by the way but this kicks ass of course damn 1980 was the like one of the worst years not at first but
if he could play the drums like bonzo.... (and maybe he can!!) god damn, he makes page and plant obsolete...... i'm a zep fanatic and i cant believe i blasphemed like that..... JPJ FOR FUCKING EVER!! This gives me goosebumps.....
@milesneedham c'mon, i give him his due, but page and plant obsolete? i gotta call ya on that one bro! i saw zeppelin at the garden opening night 6/7/77 and JPJ played his ass off, but we all know he was only 1/4 of the greatest band that ever was, i know you didnt really mean he was better than the rest of the band, but just sayin thats gonna make any true zep fan stand up n shout. ROCK ON!!!
my own personal favorite rock bassist since the day i first heard him after picking up their first album way back when. many fine bass players are around , but they never quite equaled those smooth , unique bass lines jonesy is capable of.
Saw JPJ in Dublin when he toured Zooma. Maybe I'm listening back with rose-coloured earphoness but his version of Levee that night was much closer to the original and not quite so grungy. Much and all as a highlight P+P was, therm not doing Levee when I saw them was a dream thwarted for me. JPJ fulfilled that ambition.
I saw John with King Crimson. John played this. They were both very good but if you ask me I would have been happier just to listen to John all night long. It sounded much better than this. After this song was over it was like John grabbed you by the shirt poured a bottle of whiskey down your throat and and threw you in a chair. It was a thing of beauty and power and very sexy.
I grew up in the late 70's when Zeppelin was still THE band- I got sick of the over-worship & over-idolization of Jimmy Page (I mean can you really listen to live versions of "Dazed & Confused"?!? didn't think so!); John Paul Jones is the man who got me to reapproach Led Zeppelin. His genius suffered under Page. Zeppelin wouldn't have been half as good w/out John Paul Jones. Look at the cool stuff Jones does know in comparison to the NOTHING Jimmy Page does.
@donedave Hey common don't hate on jimmy, but even jimmy said that JPJ was the most talented musician in the group, saying something like he wasn't even half as talented as JPJ and had enought trouble with 6 strings.
@donedave ....what did you just say.... live versions of dazed and confused are so amazing... i mean the TSRTS version is so sick and creative. the DVD version almost as amazing.. i have no idea where you get off saying his live performances weren't good.. .? cuz till about 79 he was was the best.. period
@iuricastro22 So right! And he is so underrated, too!! All you hear is Robert Plant, Robert Plant (too overrated, in my opinion) Jones always just did his job. Which is to say, he excelled at his job.
That bassist is carrying a damn tree-trunk round his neck

@neilzep Except Them Crooked Vultures, who have one quarter of Zeppelin, and 3 other incredibly talented musicians.

@ShotGunAnd Pedal Steel - typically a country thing, hard as hell to play well actually. The other guy's playing a Chapman stick ...
CusterFlux 1 year ago
@CusterFlux The bloke playing the stick is Nick Begg, who was the bass player with Katchagoogoo (no don't google them for your own sanity)

John Paul Jones is one the most talented musicians to ever walk the earth! World's finest bass player. The guy is a genius.
Every Led Zeppelin fan should check his solo stuff, it's great!
I'm happy he's on Them Crooked Vultures nowadays, it's gonna be 2009's greatest record!
