The Beach Boys are soooo much better than the Beatles. Brian had this way with melody, harmony and feeling - as far as I know, the Bealtes only had the melody.
@fujiwarataku Dónde fue tu pelo largo? Dónde esta la chica que solía conocer? Cómo pudiste perder ese alegre candor? Oh, Caroline, no...
Being a Beatlemaniac myself and can never seem to pick a favourite album because they're all so good. But I have to agree with you, Pet Sounds IS my personal fav. pop album. I really admire Brian Wilson's creativity, I do believe he was a musical genious.
@shyguy76 Yeah, I would probably say that the Beatles have an overall better catalog of music, although the Beach Boys have some good, underrated albums aside from Pet Sounds (Today!, Beach Boys' Party, Surf's Up, Sunflower), but I'll always feel that Pet Sounds is the best pop album of all time. I've played out Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road and Revolver but Pet Sounds can never be played out for me, it always seems fresh.
Actually, The Beatles had went to the release....sale... party thing of Pet Sounds, and were inspired to make Sgt. Peppers. If you listen to A day in the life and Good Vibrations, you can tell that they are alike, considering that they both have multiple parts and different sounds and such.
I wouldn't say it inspired them to make Sgt Pepper but it certainly opened their eyes to new sounds and new ways to create them and some of that found its way onto the album. Paul Mc in particular was a huge admirer of Brian Wilson.
BTW why does everybody rave so much about Sgt Pepper - it's a great album bit nowher near as good as Abbey Road. Pet Sounds and Abbey Road are the best two albums ever made ... in my opinion.
Wow you can really hear the end of the Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever" in the end of this song. I have a much better sense of what the Beatles were doing in that somewhat odd outro (including the Cranberry Sauce/I Buried Paul line). IMO the Beach Boys did a better job of it here.

@lavyheed I misread your comment there. I thought you called Elvis great music.
are singers musicians? hmm
I think that's gonna be a matter of opinion. I would call someone who just has a good voice and takes singing lessons but neither learns about music theory or spends a good deal of time learning, practicing, and playing an instrument a singer. Not a musician, a singer.
I think to be a musician, one must either study music and theory OR be serious about and skilled in an instrument.
@PrestonDowMusic but surely a singer is a musician? like you say tho its a matter of opinion, personally i dont think it matters if you know the theory behind music or can play an instrument...if your producing music you are a musician....its like saying if you can play bass, your only a bass player...if you play guitar you are only a guitarist? i work in live sound and trust me pal.....its not often you will hear me stick up for lead singers lol, but the have got to be considered musicians
yeah, from that point of view I agree. my reasoning behind it is that a singer doesn't have to learn how to sing. everyone can sing. playing a musical instrument is an acquired skill.
if someone is involved in the creative process, then I would consider them a musician. a singer in a band is a musician.
however, I would still consider people like Katy Perry -people who write no music, play no instrument, and are simply told what to sing - to be just singers/performers
@PrestonDowMusic again i disagree that a singer doesnt have to learn to sing....i'm not talking singing lessons here, i mean actually using there voice, but like i said all along its a matter of opinion, and that what makes music so great, that 2 people can listen to the same piece of music and completely disagree with the other....
and i get what you say about katy perry and the like but they are musicians.....im a loose term but musicians all the same, i think so anyway
@lavyheed you know what I"ve been in a bad mood the last 3 days and I finally got out and made some mnusic today so I'm feeling good.
you're right. anyone who makes a living doing music or takes performing or playing or singing or writing music very seriously could be considered a musician, i was being stuck up.
sorry i wasted yoour time with my silly youtube arguings and ramblings
Jeez, this song is sooo sad and yet so beautiful. It reminds me of how much I loved my ex-wife when we were together. Sadly we fell out of love and then we parted. Although we are still good friends, she lives in NZ and I live in the UK. Occasionally, it still hurts, especially when I hear this song. It leaves me weeping for the loss of the deepest love I've ever experienced.
I'll never forget listening to this song on the radio after I passed my driver's test at age 16. Amazing how music plays such a big part in one's life, especially when they are songs that simply make you feel good at feel good times.
@leppardkiss1 Funnt you should mention that, because, Sir Paul once said that this album inspired him to come up with the idea for the "Sgt. Pepper" album...and Brian came up with the idea for "Pet Sounds" after hearing "Rubber Soul!"
@txncgirl1 i used this amazing song to have sex with a girl called caroline she was so wet listening to it in my car that she fucked me in it for 2 hrs straight - any song that can get u laid is a great song
I love the contrast this has with the opener. "Wouldn't it Be Nice" paints a sort of utopic future where the couple will grow old, be happy, and everything will work out perfectly. This song is quite the opposite, a yearning nostalgia for the past.
I agree with many of the foregoing comments. This album is intensely personal and emotional and, once you get into it, it is very uplifting nevertheless.
Some of pet sounds was good, I think they had been falling apart for a while and after this, it was down hill. In comparing these guys to the Beatles, remember in the same year of '67 they came out with Sgt. Peppers and every song was good. the Beach Boys did not get the acclaim they might have thought they deserved
I truly love this song and associate it with my youth. My sis had it on a 45 and I listened to it a lot; great tune with that sad bittersweet Brian feel.
People who claim Pet Sounds is "boring" don't now ANYTHING about music, harmony or whatsoever. It wouldn't be exaggerated to rate it as the greatest achievement in pop music ever. There had never been a rock record with that level of sophistication before. The incorporation of intricate jazz-like harmonies, the astonishingly beautiful "vocal symphonies", the innovative and unusual experimentation of "sounds" of this record paved the way for a lot of stuff.
Holy shit, can anyone just listen to music for what it is anymore? It's music, it tells a fuckin story, either you like the song and it's story or you don't.
I see a lot of references from Wikipedia's article on the Beach Boys by folks acting "in the know". Hey. We all have access to the internet.
As a counterpoint... I've loved the Beach Boys for well over 25 years and I still prefer the first five albums to any of the more versatile and erudite arrangements from Brian's later creative periods. Folks often overlook how hard it is to craft a simple song, as silly as that sounds, and it still be moving. The Beatles were great at this craft too.
Pet Sounds is Brian Wilson's masterpiece. It's a true gem. If you listen closely to every little nuance you'll hear a lot of great things. Everytime I hear it I catch something else, a sound, feeling, memory. It's a long way from "Surfin' USA."
This album opens and closes better than any other I have ever heard., from the yearning innocence of "Wouldn't it Be Nice" to the poignant disillusionment of "Caroline, No"
The beatles inspired this album by releasing rubber soul which I think is better then pet sounds but this album is truly amazing & one of my favourites I must be honest & say without Paul, John, George & ringo, the beach boys would never have been as competitive & this pushed them to becoming even better & more experimental. Sgt peppers, revolver & White album are my favourites!! Pink floyd's dark side of the moon is epic too
Pet sounds is the only Beach Boys album I really care for. Brian Wilson poured his heart and soul into making it. Caroline No and I just wasn't made for these times are my two favorite tracks from it.
People who say Pet Sounds is "boring" truly don't get it. I'm not trying to come off as an elitist jerk, but I truly think they don't quite know how to take it. Boring? It's as intense as the heaviest Zeppelin track but far more subtle and emotionally cathartic. Most of the tracks are NOT catchy pop tunes that you'll want to blast in the car with the top down. The album is like many subtle masterpieces: an acquired taste. I bet most people who are bored by PS are also bored by foreign dramas.
@wji1976 i can only agree. im 17 when i first put ps on, i hated it and at this point i knew EVERYTHING from beatles to stones to floyd to clapton. but u could say i forced myself to listen to it and now it makes me tear. to say im obsessed with it is an understatement
Yeah you do sound like an elitist pretentious fuck. If i was in Nam, i'd have came back swinging at random hippie fucks. But you know what? I came back from Iraq/Horn of Africa instead, and i'll be looking for fucks like you. There's lots of them in California, so hopefully I'll bump into one.. He'll get a good view of my knuckles. The first four albums were the best. I can't wait to slap an Apple laptop on the head of the next hipster I see.
@wji1976 I basically agree with you but calling this "subtle and intense" in the same breath is contradictory rubbish. Why not just call it a jewel in its own right and leave it at that?
@superkenalmighty Well now, example: Don't Talk (Put Your Head...) could easily be called subtle and intense. It's got nothing that leaps out at you, like a beat or a riff or a loud vocal, but when you really listen in to it there is a LOT of little stuff going on, and the overall mood is really heavy and pained and desiring and emotionally intense all around.
@wji1976 I'm a big fan of the Beach Boys popular stuff (cars, girls, surfin') and thought Pet Sounds was boring as hell but It get on me. It's very relaxing. Your response is very respectful compared to most Pro Brian people that just blast everyone and say they hate Mike Love blah blah blah. So thanks for a very respectful post.
@wji1976 I didn't discover pet sounds till I was 44 yrs old, and I am a massive music lover. I think for a lot of people, especially Brits like myself, the Beach Boys were considered and disregarded at the same time as a cheesey pop band. I now know that Brian Wilson is one of the very few real musical geniuses!
@wji1976 yes, pet sounds is definatley an acquired taste. I uderstand how some people wouldn't be fans of this style music, but at the same time it is frustrating.
@wji1976 What's your favorite foreign drama? I just saw the French crime thriller Rififi and I was interested in seeing some more foreign films. I've heard The Bicycle Thief and The Seventh Seal is good.
fuck the beatles. stop talking about the beatles. this is the beach boys. two different bands. you cant compare them in the way most of you are comparing them. stop.
@kthy0056 Brian Wilson respected The Beatles and was probably a bit more inspired by their competition (along with other people), not really influenced. I don't see any part of their music being Beatles like.
It's funny, but this was NOT a Beach Boys song. It was originally available only as a 45. Brian Wilson took full credit for it and it was added later. I had the 45 (as soon as it was released) and remember all the hub bub surrounding it when it came out. It was my favorite of all his work for a long time, but as I grew, so did my ear. Pet Sounds is now my favorite work of Brian's as well as the rest of the BBs.
I hate that plastic bottle, Brian shouldnt have added it :(

What was the story in this song?..
karateslaginnek 5 months ago
@karateslaginnek I think the train is meant to signify her leaving, forever.
The plot of the song it self isn't particularly important, it's the way it contrasts with the first song of the album, Wouldn't it be Nice.

Irwiin161 6 months ago
I love the contrast this has with the opener. "Wouldn't it Be Nice" paints a sort of utopic future where the couple will grow old, be happy, and everything will work out perfectly. This song is quite the opposite, a yearning nostalgia for the past.
ABurningCanoe 9 months ago 2
I agree with many of the foregoing comments. This album is intensely personal and emotional and, once you get into it, it is very uplifting nevertheless.

Some of pet sounds was good, I think they had been falling apart for a while and after this, it was down hill. In comparing these guys to the Beatles, remember in the same year of '67 they came out with Sgt. Peppers and every song was good. the Beach Boys did not get the acclaim they might have thought they deserved

Lagaidh 11 months ago
Pet Sounds is Brian Wilson's masterpiece. It's a true gem. If you listen closely to every little nuance you'll hear a lot of great things. Everytime I hear it I catch something else, a sound, feeling, memory. It's a long way from "Surfin' USA."

A few comments down, someone said PS bores him or her to tears.
wji1976 1 year ago

He'll get a good view of my knuckles. borskyviolin 11 months ago
@wji1976 I basically agree with you but calling this "subtle and intense" in the same breath is contradictory rubbish. Why not just call it a jewel in its own right and leave it at that?
superkenalmighty 11 months ago
@superkenalmighty Well now, example: Don't Talk (Put Your Head...) could easily be called subtle and intense. It's got nothing that leaps out at you, like a beat or a riff or a loud vocal, but when you really listen in to it there is a LOT of little stuff going on, and the overall mood is really heavy and pained and desiring and emotionally intense all around.

@wji1976 I'm a big fan of the Beach Boys popular stuff (cars, girls, surfin') and thought Pet Sounds was boring as hell but It get on me. It's very relaxing.

Just because you say so? If BBs and Beatles can't be compared, then nothing can't be compared really.
They sang pop music in the same decade, and were rivals. They were influenced by each other's works. It's normal to be compared.

My all time favorite song by the Beach Boys.
Nighthawk5210 1 year ago
@Nighthawk5210
