Even under the normal war state, the concept of Geneva Convention is that the surrendered soldiers are non militants and therefore hsould not be treated brutally.
But the US air force intended to kill many civilians. That are was a residential area and those who were killed in Tokyo air raid amounted to about 100,000. The used weapons were fire boms aimed at burning everything.
The victims were the elderly, children, women, all of whom were brutally burn to death. This is a war crime.

I am Taiwanese. As ar as I know, the so-called strategic bombing(non-discriminated bombing) during WW2 were started by Japan, most notably the bombing of Chongqing(重慶爆擊 渡洋爆擊) from 1938 to 1943. You can still see Japanese wartime newsreel about this air raid, it can't be denied. But I think U.S. government owe Japan an apologize, seems you can't justify yourself by showing the enemy also done wrong. Even the famous philosopher John Rawls believed the Great Tokyo air raid was wrong.

The US side often uses this logic. This is not true. This is an excuse to metigate such a huge massacre. This area may have some factories. And the most of the large scale modern factories were destroyed. Then some of the production naturally had to be shifted to the small factories i rsidential area. But the destruction of large scale factories was sufficient to radically drop Japanese military production. The US army used this logic to cover their crime.The same as Iraqu war.

You are right. Even Curtis LeMay, the man who ordered the bombing admitted that his orders considered a war crime. However, he ordered it to end the war quickly and to lessen casualties on both sides.
That said, Japanese high command during WWII played dirty. Not only they purposely put war factories. inside highly urban areas. In Okinawa and Malaya, they even used civilians as meat shields. They have a complete disregard of human lives. Lessons should be learn.

US General Douglas MacArthur plan to bomb China was not realized due to the concern of the US President that it may lead to the war with USSR.
If there was no USSR threat, the uS certainly took the same strategy to bomb the cities to kill citizens. Then there were many Chinese citizens who had to die. There was also the possiblity that atomic weapons were used. The US would say that since China behaved wrong and the citizens must be punished as well.

Japanese Government in Tokyo tried to stop the war. The reason why Japan did not declare a war was that Tokyo government had no intention to continue the war. But this was hampered by the military which controled Japan in those days. Chinese side as well tried to exaust Japan by prolonging the war. It is the US that threatened Japan by cutting oil export and sent a provoking request to withdraw every Japanese power outside of Japan. The choice left to Japan was either to be a subordinate country by accepting the US demand or starting a war agains the US. India judge at Tokyo War Criminal Court said that under such a situation, even the smallest country would fight against the US.

But in those days, not only Japan but also almost all of the European countries put their army in China. The cause of the war between Japan and China was that Japanese army praticing outside of Peking and Chinese army collided in 1937. Then both countries went into the war without war declaration. This is not a simple event that Japan tried to invade China.

Even under the normal war state, the concept of Geneva Convention is that the surrendered soldiers are non militants and therefore hsould not be treated brutally.
But the US air force intended to kill many civilians. That are was a residential area and those who were killed in Tokyo air raid amounted to about 100,000. The used weapons were fire boms aimed at burning everything.
The victims were the elderly, children, women, all of whom were brutally burn to death. This is a war crime.

In 1937, US started to supply weapons and money to Chiang Kai-Sheks National Party which was attacking Japan Army.
In 1940, US deployed Flying Tigers to China, and started attacking Japanese.
1 hr 20 min before Pearl Harbor Attack, US cruiser attacked and sank a Japanese submarine.
US did all these without declaring war on Japan.

1. I'm trying to refrain from justifying the murder but you must realize, civilians working in war factories does not make them innocent. They were supporting their government plus, it would make an invasion harder when tanks and ammunition were on hand for the Imperial army.
