From what I recall, Massa caused an avoidable accident in the previous race so was handed a 10 place grid penalty for this event. So to avoid the penalty, Sauber simply chose to stick Frentzen in instead.
I did record every practice session from SpeedTV's broadcast, and there were MANY onboards. I'd post some of them, but I don't want t risk anything about copyrights :P
This might actually be 2002 though. Remember Heinz-Harald Frentzen took Felipe Massa's seat for the USA gp in 2002 because Massa had been banned for one race after dangerous driving or something like that.
@blainyrules no. look at the comments below. And also look at the begining of the video, you can see the copyright and this confirms that the video was created in 2002. And i downloaded in 2002.
After the collapse of Arrows, Frentzen signed a deal with Sauber for 2003, then in Italy Massa got 10-place grid penalty for the next race at USA. So Sauber decided to invite Frentzen to drive at States in order to avoid Massa's grid penalty.
By the way, there was no digital coverage since 2003.
@BrokenBaculum I understand why you would assume this was 2003, but it could be 2002. Remember, back in 2002 Felipe Massa had a one race suspension and he was not allowed to take part in the USA GP that year. Heinz Harald Frentzen was avialable as the team he had been driving for, Arrows, had pulled out earlier in the season due to fiancial difficulties. So Sauber hired him for that one race.
@CS7793 Cheers buddy. At the time of writing the memory of Massa's 2002 ban had slipped my mind. So I assumed, possibly wrongly, that it was 2003. It doesn't really matter anyway, I'm just thankful that we still have an opportunity to enjoy this footage. Heinz-Harald was an incredibly under-rated driver, and it was good to see him back in a Sauber.
@BrokenBaculum Wrong. 2002. First time for Sauber in 2002, he subsituted for Massa who had a big penalty for colliding with de la Rosa in Monza where he wrecked his suspension. After that HHF got a contract.
@BrokenBaculum Its 2002 when Arrows folded after the German Grand Prix and Frentzen did a one off drive replacing Massa at the US Grand Prix for Sauber :)
@BrokenBaculum No, this is 2002. Frentzen did drive for Sauber in the 2003 season and drove for Arrows in 2002, but when Arrows went bust after the German GP Frentzen was without a drive and replaced Massa once in 2002, for this race, the US GP.

is it me or does the car pull to the left down the straight
garethkielty 1 year ago
The car has oversteer because they were probably using a low downforce set up

It´s true that these recordings are from 2002, because HHF´s starting number is 8. In this race he replaced Felipe Massa.
In his complete F1 season 2003, HHF had the starting number 10.

Wow that car is oversteering a lot!

All of Sauber's cars were awful, until they were taken over by BMW.
09Murphy09 1 year ago
@09Murphy09 Not really, Sauber had been a consistent midfielder from 2001-2004. But i agree that once BMW took over things got better.
