Because the latter is obvious physical pain - waterboarding isn't pain, however, to constitute torture then it must then cause extreme mental distress. Personally, water boarding seems a lot less harsh than getting fingernails pulled, getting torn apart with pliers, getting eyes pulled out, or being beheaded. Which to me is torture. Waterboarding has only been used a few times to top terrorists and the info that was given accounted for 50% of what we knew. It prevented a terrorist attack. Information obtained via torture is never reliable, this is pretty well established in the literature. Torture is used by totalitarian regimes to elicit false confessions from political prisoners, which pretty well describes Bush's "War on Terror". It does nothing except degrade our democracy.

I've waterboarded my self in the shower before. It's an interesting illusion I must say. Because the latter is obvious physical pain - waterboarding isn't pain, however, to constitute torture then it must then cause extreme mental distress. They are demonstrating it because waterboarding is the controvercial subject, not inflicting physical injury. Does it cause distress? Thats why it is being demonstrated. If what everyone is saying who have tried it is true (you feel you're about to die, extreme panic) then it definately is torture. Logical as opposed to emotional reasoning, mate.

Personally, water boarding seems a lot less harsh than getting fingernails pulled, getting torn apart with pliers, getting eyes pulled out, or being beheaded. Which to me is torture. Information obtained via torture is never reliable, this is pretty well established in the literature. Torture is used by totalitarian regimes to elicit false confessions from political prisoners, which pretty well describes Bush's "War on Terror". It does nothing except degrade our democracy.

Ok, thanks for answering. You would not do what is necessary to protect American lives. You care more about the protection of a terrorists rights than you do your own countrymen. If your family was killed and you discovered that your government did not do all if could to get valuable information, you'd be singing a different tune. These people are trained to resist interrogation and that is why waterboarding is so valuable. It does them no harm and it does the trick...in less than 30 seconds.

If you ask me, this doesn't seem harsh enough for getting information out of someone that could possibly hold the key to thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of lives being saved.
