This is film is a masterpiece. One of my favorites of all time. It has just been released on Blu-ray with a fantastic restoration. Available from Amazon UK and plays in Regions A,B, and C players. It will blow you away, again!!
Good movie!!! That last shot, where the camera is circling them...When that guy realizing for the first time, who this woman really is memorable. So is that Bernard Herrmann score. I want to say that it is the best one since the Hitchcock movie, "Psycho", but he composed other ones, which are just as good like the score from "Vertigo" and "Taxi Driver", but there is another score that he composed for another DePalma movie entitled, "Sisters". That's a scary one, the movie and the movie score!!!
This was Bernard Herrmann's last score before his death..and this movie is actually quite good..it is something an homage to 'Vertigo'...Cliff Robertson is ok...but Genevieve Bujold is brilliant..beautiful..one of DePalma's better films..
@Sugarbehr1967 I think it is an underrated masterpiece, amazing score great plot, beautiful cinematography. Many touching plot lines and emotions. I fiirst saw it reading nothing of story, no trailers either, going in completely fress makes the film quite different and much more effective.
@Sugarbehr1967 No, his next to last – his last was “ Taxi Driver ”!! – a bizarre and, indeed, extraordinarily powerful score!! ( The film has been presented by the *Los Angeles Philharmonic* on account of the score. )
I consider this one of DePalma¹s two greatest films, along with “ Femme Fatale ” – a very different kind of film ( avant-garde where “ Obsession ” is classical, you could say ) but a masterpiece.
@Enantiodromialist Thank you for the clarification....and i can only imagine what it was like with the LA Philharmonic...I personally didn't care for 'Femme Fatale'...didn't work for me..

@spanishprisoner Yes, leads you o believe it is some mystical, paranormal type film, which it is not, suspensful, romantic, Vertigo homage yes! Amazing herrmann score, his best in my opinion, was it After Taxi Driver?
Why are people always calling De Palma a "master" filmmaker? He's a ripoff artist! Watch any Hitchcock or Argento film and you'll see what I mean. He just steals techniques!
@KinzCove There is paying Homage and there is down right copying. He's the latter. I just see a man trying to make someone elses movies. DePalma needs to try and make his own shit with his own techniques, not using someone elses.
One of my favorite movies...and one of my very favorite music scores, by Bernard Herrmann. It's more like a film made to accompany gorgeous music, than a score made to accompany a film -- the music expresses the drama and emotions that seethe inside the tormented characters. Very dreamlike and disturbingly romantic.
Yes, I saw this when it came out too, I was ten years old and I remember it to this day. It seems to be a strangely rare film. You can watch it streaming on Netflix, though - worth signing up! Also there are downloads.
De Palma's greatest film, and one of the most sheerly gorgeous films ever made.
Thank you very much for your comment, my feelings exactly. As a musician, I consider this Herrmann's greatest surviving score - the exception being "The Magnificent Ambersons", which was tragically butchered.
You're right, the film is very much made around the score, it is almost like an opera. I do not know of any other narrative film like this - films like "Koyaanisqatsi" etc. make music and image equal, but I know of no other instance of a narrative doing this - this film is truly unique.
@Enantiodromialist Morricone comes close in several Leone Films Once upon a Time in America, Once Upon a time in West and again for Tornatore's Cinema Paradiso.
Great movie!

@QuatermassMan is this depalma's 'take' on Laura or rebecca?
johnrunion 1 year ago
@johnrunion I would say DePalma's take on Vertigigo, as Dressed to Kill was DePamma doing PHYSCHO.

See Vertigo first. This is a nice shadow film to that one. And San Minato looks great.
