Elsewhere on youtube there is a documentary about Sacred Harp which focuses on Hoboken, GA and Mr. Lee. What a sincere, gentle, Godly man who lives and sings his great faith, and thus witnesses so strongly. The power of this singing reminds me of attending Plymouth Brethren chapel as a teenager and the good folks there sang with equal passion and fervour. @ClaireConrad, they all sing like this in the south (and elsehwere where Sacred Harp is sung). You should hear the Henegar Alabama singing or the Chatahouchee convention. It's full congregational singing
@ClaireConrad, as the description notes, this is an annual singing at a Church in Alabama. It is not sponsored by a folk music assembly, but is a well-attended singing, so the people singing are from all over Alabama and surrounding states, rather than from a single community. The leader, David Lee, is a lifelong Sacred Harp singer from South Georgia.
@chria3886, FYI, there are a handful of Sacred Harp singers in Melbourne. A Google search turns up contact information. Best of luck!
Out of all the sacred harp singing All hail the power of Jesus name this version was the best. Sad it is so short . I wish we had this in Australia but everyone thinks I am nuts!!!! LOL
The leader's graceful hand gestures led me to think that this might be a folk-revival assemblage (as opposed to parishioners of a local church). The voices were more chorally educated than would be expected from heritage singers in a country church. So did a folk-music society sponsor this?
