Folks, the car destroyed was more than likely a stunt double. Linda like for a fight scene. you really think Stallone's getting hit in the face in a Rocky movie? No, it's some poor slap built like Stallone. They probably found some old rust bucket and bondo'd it up to make it presentable for the sole purpose of doing this to it.
QUIT WHINING-----NO ONE WANTED A POST 3 SPEED COLUMN CAR BACK THEN------BUT THEN AGAIN YOU CANT GET A COASTAL RUSTED 4 DOOR NOWADAYS FOR 2400 WITH A BLUEFLAME SIX POPPER---STOOPID FUTURE
That is so sad that that poor piece of american history was destroyed in such a horrible manner. that poor poor car did not deserve to be treated that horribly. it deserves so much better than that. :(
It's a huge blunder on the Director's part to have the driver repeatedly say, "old man." In the field of creative writing, as you may know, to use the same term repetitively suggests poor writing skills.
@neatoauctions It all depends on the transmission. My 57 chevy had a cast iron powerglide tranny. Shifting the gear selector all the way down did put the car in reverse. The hydromatic tranny, with the gear selector down, put the car in low.
classic scene..."Fifty bucks never killed anybody".....notice Luke take the money out of the guy's hand. Once a used car salesman, always a used car salesman...lol...
Just wait 30 years & see what people think of all the cars being killed off in the Cash For Clunkers videos. A horrific, stupid waste of good machinery.
NNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO not the BEL-AIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That car probably started out as a junker and received fresh paint and whitewall tires for the scenes it was in. It's fairly common when a classic car is wrecked in a film that the car is'nt a show car. Also this one was a less expensive 2-door sedan and not the far more desirable 2-door hardtop body style.
I saw this movie new & I bought this film on video disc in 1981. Even the 1980's were cooler than today. I was 20 then & I bought a '57 Bel Air 2 dr Hardtop for $3500 & I only wished I would've kept it. For I'd be sitting on a gold mine today, if only I had some foresight then. The tri five Chevy's were collectable even then but it was 1980 & that was the Good Ole Boys era, Duke's Of Hazzard was on prime time. It was trendy watching cars getting smashed up in TV shows & movies back then.
I saw them filming this awful thing (not the car scene, but some interior bar scene) when I was in high school. In my local bowling alley. I didn't know who the guy (Russell) was, but got his autograph (on my math homework). I always wondered what became of this movie, and here it is. And indeed, they trashed a wonderful car. Sad.
Fucking pointless. Beautiful car. I hope like hell it was a worthless kit car they used. Just like the Edsel. Is it restorable? Yes,Just that much more work that needs to be done. I would trade my '66 Merc in a flash for it.

Oh please, stop whining about a destroyed 57 Chevy. Those damn cars are more common than a Toyota Camry. If it means one less fucking Chevy at a car show, then I'm happy!!
Horrific waste of a classic car. Pointless, dumb and just plain wasteful. Plenty of crap from the 60s and even 70s that was plentiful enough and cheap enough to be destroyed for this scene instead of this car. I dont even like Chevys that much but this is tragic
@BelayaArmiyaForever - There's lots of cars that they wrecked in the show that are worth a lot today. At the opening credits there's a blue '64 mustang for $650. Goes to show just how things have changed in 30 years! :P
@BelayaArmiyaForever You are wrong. This film was made in 1980. At the time, tri-five Chevys were much more common, and werent worth a whole lot. The same applies to complaints about The Dukes of Hazzard (1979-1985). 68-69 Chargers werent worth anything back then. I am fortunate enough to currently own three 69s, but back then, no big deal. Would be like destroying mid-late 80s cars for a 2011 movie. Nobody cares.
@68Barracuda11s I remember trying to come up with parts for my '57 in the 80's. Things like trim pieces, etc... weren't that easy to find in good shape, even then. And even then, tri-five chevys had gained enough stature to garner them "classic" status. (And everyone who had them, or parts priced accordingly.) Cars before the early 70's still had style and grace compared to what the 80's had to offer. I doubt, in 20 years time you'll hear anyone lamenting the destruction of an 85 Impala 4dr.
lol remember, in 1980 this was a 23 year old car. and usually 20-30 year old cars are really common and are cheap in the market so i bet none of us would be crying if a 1985 chevy impala was destroyed but i bet in around 20 years those 1980's impalas will be classic. wat im tryin to say is, that 57 wasnt classic or collectible back in 1980 so they destroyed it
You couldn't be more wrong. 57 chevy's have always been popular, even when they were 5,10,15,20+ years old. They have always had a cult following. To compare it to a 85 Impala is just plain ridiculous.

I don't see what the big deal is about destroying the car; I mean it had a real oil pressure problem anyway, haha.

Say, on the '57, if you pulled the gear selector all the way to the right, like this driver does, doesn't it put the transmission in reverse?
