guys a fuckin' genius. just listen to the first opening chords of the into... he expressing the mood and passion of the song in those first breaking moments... he's wot I fuckin love about america. A nation built upon sons of bitches. Long live ya tom !!!
I do this one on the acoustic guitar. I have the vocal downpat. It's the way I sing anyway but if you heard my version you'd think Tom was doing the song with a guitar. Anyway, I love this song. I love this album. I love Tom Waits.
trembling close to you at the end was so sad. that is if you forget how sad the rest of te song is. anyway tom waits is awesoem and he wasn't that young when he wrote this was he?
Absolutely bloody agree. I was really pissed off that I couldn't get tickets for his latest gig in Edinburgh. It would have been £75 well spent. Unfortunately, they sold so fast that I missed out.
This reminds me of my American friend Rob. He was an exchange student at my university. He was the one that introduced me to the music of Tom Waits (as well as American football and poker). I've been a fan since then.
This is such a lovely song! My oldest child (aged 24) is named Martha. She hated her name as a young child, but now she loves it because everybody knows her by her first name due to the fact that it is not such a common name anymore. She is the one who told me about this song, and I find it just as lovely as she did!
this is my favourite song of all time. I can see myself making that call in a few years to the one girl i let get away. This song means so much to me.
My name is martha. I was just looking at songs with my name. Frst I found the beatles one, but I figured out it was for Paul's dog, so...But I have found this one, which is beautiful and I love it!
you have a beautiful name Martha... like the song...last coment snd i dont mean any bad shit by this but i reckon they shot the wrong beatle .Hello from Australia.
Operator, number, please: It´s been so many years will she remember my old voice while I fight the tears? Hello, hello there, is this Martha? This is old Tom Frost, and I´m calling long distance, don´t worry about the cost because it´s been forty years or more, now Martha please recall, meet me out for coffee, where we´ll talk about it all. And those werw the days of roses, poetry and prose and Martha all I had was you and all you had was me.
One of my favourite songs as it has to be one of the saddest for a man who lost his way with his gal! Found myself singing this on a bus trip 3 years ago around Thailand of all places. For what reasons and why i remember that i have no idea but just thought i'd share it!
This is an incredibly beautiful song. Only heard it in full in the last few months and found it shatteringly affecting. My father, my hero, died April 07 after a shockingly brief illness and the loss is still overwhelming. Though my parents were totally unlike Tom Frost and Martha in that they were together and happy for 50yrs, this song touched me deeply, revealing the truth that your parents were lovers and friends too. We know it, but don't understand it. I miss you Dad, ar Dheis Dé go deo.
Love the comment ruudydog. I don't want to sound like a sad twat, but I lost my mother (& hero) in September 07 after a shockingly brief illness. It doesn't go away does it?
You don't sound like a sad twat at all. My condolences to you and ruudydog. In my experience, no, it doesn't go away, you don't really get over it, bit you move on. I find that an amazing thing about us humans, that we somehow manage to bear the unbearable. I know it's a cliche, but it comforts me to know that the friends and family members I've lost, would have wanted me move on and be happy. "May we all live forever or die trying." All the best
I understand what you are going through too. My mother died in September of 2002. It never does go away. One thing that someone once told me though that has always stuck with me is, "some people say the pain will go away in time, they are wrong... you just learn to deal with it better." That little saying is so true. At least in my case...
just checking out early waits, since i was told i might enjoy him..i didnt expect anything of this beauty. makes me think of how i might look back someday on all the love i never had as a young man...

if only i could sing and write songs like this legend...hes an amazing man, especially in this song,it touches us so deep that you will never forget the first moment this song fell on your ears..thank you tom waits..hope you are well..!!!
I bought the album a couple of days ago. At first, I freaked out because all the songs sounded NOTHING like the ones from Rain Dogs, Swordfishtrombones, Mule Variations and all the other Tom Waits albums I've come to know and love. But I found it to be a calm and refreshing change of pace in the end.
Don't get me wrong, I love this album and the songs are beyond amazing. But out of all of them, THIS song stuck out the most. The melody is catchy, sad & all around beautiful. Well done, Tom.
Such a beautiful poignant song... one of my favourites. It are pieces like this that speak to the profound humanity that connects us all.. For, so many of us can relate to the bittersweet sadness expressed with the aching grittiness that is so uniquely Tom Waits.
I saw him in concert about 8 years ago, I'd love to see him again sometime. It was amazing, the sense of intimacy he was able to create with his music in a crowd of people who, very likely. had never before met.
