  • This songs gives me goosebumps everytime. It's just perfect.

  • Why do people compare Tom and Dylan??? They're not at all alike! Sure he was influenced by Dylan and all.. but they're uncomparable. Great song.

  • Beautiful song

  • guys a fuckin' genius. just listen to the first opening chords of the into... he expressing the mood and passion of the song in those first breaking moments... he's wot I fuckin love about america. A nation built upon sons of bitches. Long live ya tom !!!

  • I do this one on the acoustic guitar. I have the vocal downpat. It's the way I sing anyway but if you heard my version you'd think Tom was doing the song with a guitar. Anyway, I love this song. I love this album. I love Tom Waits.

  • give it a upload

  • trembling close to you at the end was so sad. that is if you forget how sad the rest of te song is. anyway tom waits is awesoem and he wasn't that young when he wrote this was he?

    oh well, merry christmas!

  • All I can say is this is the sweetest song that describes the one who got away.....

  • anyone realize he was only in his early 20's when he did this??? Absolutely an old soul.

  • That's true , it was at the age of 24 when he released his album including this song.

  • A great song from a genius.

Besides Bob Dylan he is the best songwriter in America since the early 70ies.

  • Absolutely bloody agree. I was really pissed off that I couldn't get tickets for his latest gig in Edinburgh. It would have been £75 well spent. Unfortunately, they sold so fast that I missed out.

This reminds me of my American friend Rob. He was an exchange student at my university. He was the one that introduced me to the music of Tom Waits (as well as American football and poker). I've been a fan since then.

  • i dunno.. hes on par with dylan and sprinsteen!!! three of them are my heroes!!!

  • Springsteen used to play with Tom Waits, he learned a lot from him. 'Jersey Girl' a song for which Springsteen is famous for was written by Waits.

  • i think you'd have to be a pretty cold-hearted person not to love this.

  • this song makes me so proud to be called martha! i love it! xx

  • My grandmother even liked Tom Waits, he's so universal!

  • Man I love this song. Has anyone else noticed that Waits takes the coolest fuckin pictures!

  • Brilliant observation....His photo's fit his unique and lyrically beautiful soul!

  • he's the coolest-i have the best german bootleg of his-it's a treasure.

  • This is such a lovely song! My oldest child (aged 24) is named Martha. She hated her name as a young child, but now she loves it because everybody knows her by her first name due to the fact that it is not such a common name anymore. She is the one who told me about this song, and I find it just as lovely as she did!

  • For my little sister Martha, I love you, joanie

  • I just love this song it is so wonderful it is very moving

  • the chorus tears me to shreds,, i have to sing along or cry,, he's huge romantic beast !!

This is old Tom Frost, and I´m calling long distance, don´t worry about the cost because it´s been forty years or more, now Martha please recall, meet me out for coffee, where we´ll talk about it all. And those werw the days of roses, poetry and prose and Martha all I had was you and all you had was me.
  • Still makes me cry even years on. Love this song - one of my all time favorites. Thanks for posting. Aah I love it!!!

  • The amazing thing about this song is that he wrote it when he was 23. It's so sincere that you could never tell.

  • so 23 year old cant b sincere?

  • What I meant to say, is that he pulls off the character he's playing so sincerely, like he's been through everything the song says.

  • Such a beautiful song.

  • il y encore des artistes sur terre! Magnifique chanson, chanteur si humain dans le sens noble du mot, douce nostalgie... merci Tom!

  • funny, tom coulda wrote that yesterday. this is like 35 yrs. ago... thanks, nice editing

  • he's singing from his soul. so sad and so romantic. great job! thank you for that !

  • The One and Only! thomas from germany

  • "I was so impulsive then, i guess that i still am. All that really matterd then, is that i was a man". Was he cheating? is that why they broke up?

  • For my hero, my sister Martha..

    Love you always, joan

  • One of my favourite songs as it has to be one of the saddest for a man who lost his way with his gal! Found myself singing this on a bus trip 3 years ago around Thailand of all places. For what reasons and why i remember that i have no idea but just thought i'd share it!

  • "we were all so young and foolish"...it's definitely better to have loved and lost,. Martha is one of the most romantic songs I've ever heard.

  • This is an incredibly beautiful song. Only heard it in full in the last few months and found it shatteringly affecting. My father, my hero, died April 07 after a shockingly brief illness and the loss is still overwhelming. Though my parents were totally unlike Tom Frost and Martha in that they were together and happy for 50yrs, this song touched me deeply, revealing the truth that your parents were lovers and friends too. We know it, but don't understand it. I miss you Dad, ar Dheis Dé go deo.

  • amen,

    go mbeannaí Dia thú

  • Go raibh míle, a chara. Go n-éirí leat.

  • Love the comment ruudydog. I don't want to sound like a sad twat, but I lost my mother (& hero) in September 07 after a shockingly brief illness. It doesn't go away does it?

    Good luck to you mate.

  • You don't sound like a sad twat at all. My condolences to you and ruudydog. In my experience, no, it doesn't go away, you don't really get over it, bit you move on. I find that an amazing thing about us humans, that we somehow manage to bear the unbearable. I know it's a cliche, but it comforts me to know that the friends and family members I've lost, would have wanted me move on and be happy. "May we all live forever or die trying." All the best

  • I understand what you are going through too. My mother died in September of 2002. It never does go away. One thing that someone once told me though that has always stuck with me is, "some people say the pain will go away in time, they are wrong... you just learn to deal with it better." That little saying is so true. At least in my case...

  • Luv this my girlfriends name is martha :)

  • Para Betty de Fulschyl con toda corazón

  • You know i think this is the most sad song i've ever heard. It's great to hear, Waits is a genius this really gets to you

  • hello hello there is this martha

  • love this song, this song was playing when my family and i almost had an accident in the car on the highway in france, i drived the car off the highway and we survived it:D.

  • Pablo, soy Patricia

Esta canción eres tú hace 20 años.

  • I agree - one of his finest, but then the incredible thing about this man is that almost every song he wrote is one of his finest. The most likeable genius ever.

  • " The most likeable genius ever " I dont think there is any better way to describe the man.

I saw him live in Paris a couple of weeks ago. Best consert I ever went to !

  • He is the second best genius Dylan being the first

  • i agree with dylan, he's my favourite artist of all time and i'm really getting into tom waits recently

  • great song...Tim Buckley did this on Sefronia. Will find it. Glad you enjoyed the gig

  • haha! I just finished listening to Sefronia on vinyl and came on to here to re-listen to the tom waits version. Good song.

  • So gorgeous... so painful... glad I'm drunk...

  • if only i could sing and write songs like this legend...hes an amazing man, especially in this song,it touches us so deep that you will never forget the first moment this song fell on your ears..thank you tom waits..hope you are well..!!!

  • he is stil the best arstist ever no one cane make you feel like hime i love tom waits your the best

  • So wonderful!

  • Tom Waits is so gut wrenchingly human. This song in particular strikes a profound chord ... evoking an ache that will never fully diminish.

  • Have always loved this song. And it reminds me of a special person, I hope he's well.

  • i love this song so much.

    hes so cool.

  • An awesome, beatiful and sad song :')

  • This song breaks my heart each time I hear it. It makes me think of my first love and what ever happened to her.

  • so touching

  • I bought the album a couple of days ago. At first, I freaked out because all the songs sounded NOTHING like the ones from Rain Dogs, Swordfishtrombones, Mule Variations and all the other Tom Waits albums I've come to know and love. But I found it to be a calm and refreshing change of pace in the end.

Don't get me wrong, I love this album and the songs are beyond amazing. But out of all of them, THIS song stuck out the most. The melody is catchy, sad & all around beautiful. Well done, Tom.

  • the most beautiful song ever sung done by a complete nutjob

  • This song makes me cry every time I hear it...

  • greatest artist ever!

  • i think this song is about regret. Don't hold back on what you believe because it'll soon be too late. Happiness only real when shared.

  • ...you got me down on my knees Mister Waits

  • Such a beautiful poignant song... one of my favourites. It are pieces like this that speak to the profound humanity that connects us all.. For, so many of us can relate to the bittersweet sadness expressed with the aching grittiness that is so uniquely Tom Waits.

I saw him in concert about 8 years ago, I'd love to see him again sometime. It was amazing, the sense of intimacy he was able to create with his music in a crowd of people who, very likely. had never before met.

  • one of the most heart felt, sad, beautiful songs i've ever listened to, truly stunning

  • Sublime, perfetta, indimenticabile.

    Saluti.

  • for me truly one of he's best

  • Grateful for you, Tom

  • This song changed my life...it inspired me to end a bad relationship w/ my ex GF

  • most beautiful song I've heard I think

  • I love him, my wife hates him! Some people just don't listen.

  • Its like the craftsman who crosses the road...wonderful

  • One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard . So simple but so great. Especially if your able to associate it with someone you dont see anymore , you connected so well but could never be and you imagine calling them years later . Still miss you John D . Absolute beginners !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Tom is definitely unique... :o)

  • After listening this great, fully emotional song I can tell that its great being Martha!!

  • that's true;]

  • I love being Martha;] "that's true" was meant to be a reply;)

  • I am new to Tom so can anyone else suggest some more great ballads of his cause hes fantastic

  • If you can afford a CD-get ''USED SONGS''-otherwise you'll go broke 'cause Tom is quite prolific-JERSEY GIRL-HEART OF SATURDAY NIGHT-SAN DIEGO SERENADE -goes on and on---[

  • hey thanks alot I loved all of those songs and found some more, i cant believe his diversity in songs like the other side of the world, just fantastic music, appreciate the suggestions

  • Heartattack and Vine is his best album by far!

    But that is my taste....

He`s a genius og if you like him, and have the time to listen, you have great thing ahead of you to listen to!

I also went to see The black rider in the theater.... WOW!

  • heart attack and vine, blue valentine ,night hawk at the diner, closing time to name a few

  • this is my favourite tom waits song

  • gotta agree with that !

  • Ones of the best waits songs

  • agree. one of the best ballads - along with Time and Tom Traubert's Blues. In my opinion...

  • What album is this on? Bette Midler sings a good version of this - that's how I heard about it

  • Closing Time.

  • Thank you

  • the funniest thing is that he could sing this song when he was 20...

  • I forgot to say that with that song i broke my record of crying.3 hours without stopping....TOM WAITS IS THE MAN....

  • i wish i had the record version, everything sounds better on those, this still sounds fantastic on cds... he is at that. he is at that...

  • If this song doesn't break your heart, then you don't have one.

  • i've just got tickets to see tom in july in dublin - very, very happy!!!!!!

  • Can't believe I'm going to miss him in Dublin. Sickened.

  • im leavin gaeltacht early to cum back early and see him. its gonna be the highlight of my summer, neigh, life

  • me too!!!:D:D:D cant wait!!!

  • this was the song that got me into Tom Waits, and it's been amazing discovering all the incredible songs he's written over the years. Something else that impresses me is that this is the first video i've seen on youtube that doesn't have any negative comments.

  • An absolute masterpiece, no doubt about it !!!

  • What can i say, a bona-fide genius

  • One of my top five favorite songs ever. Thanks for putting this up.
