You can leave home, as I did 35 years ago, but you can never get home out of your soul. And as time goes by one forgets the negative and amplfies the positive. Then you find the sad reality: You can't go home. I've tried and I know.
As someone who is irish catholic and has lived here all my life ireland is unbearable now between europe and the greens and the imf you cant take a piss without asking.I have been around the world in rich and in poor countries and have never experienced the eye wateringIbureaucracy that ireland has to offer she has sold herself cheap to the buracrats once a great countrie now just a bureaucracy in a group of bureaucracies all run by the germans and the french. So im leaving for england see ye
@kevcar08 my grandad was from soho street of an Irish family born and bred in liverpool and left and married my grandmother here in Dublin. The only time he ever got to go back to Liverpool was when he was in his 70s with me and my dad. Strange how the city felt like a second home to me. He passed away recently and I, but more-so my da, wish we knew more about his hometown.
Hearing this song makes me feel like it is the thoughts of my grandad!
Born to an Irish family in Gerard Gardens - family all fervent Reds of the Liverpool FC persuasion - doesnt matter in Lpool, we're all Scousers and rightly proud of it.
Not a singer in the whole world could have sung this with more feeling. Thank you again and again Kelly for uploading and reminding everyone of how great Luke was. And thank you Skellybootle for your comments....
For me Luke Kelly is the Greatest singer of them all. I was about 15 years old and a rock & roll fan when i heard The Galway Races on the finnis radio. No more rock & roll no more CCR or Led Zeppelin. Iwas lost to the Dubliners dimension.
I was born in Liverpool. Real scousers are all colours and all religions. Our enemy isn't someone whose family comes from another continent or who has a different religion or a different coloured complexion. Our enemy is the bosses who would have us fight each other instead of them.
Boss Luke, yer man, Luke's politics were obviously shaped in Liverpool, he couldn't stand the conservative, backwater Dev country back home, although he went back to join the Dubliners-he was a Larkinite and I am sure he knew bIg 'Jim' Larkin was born in the Pool-love did song
This song really does mean allot to me, I was brought up in Ireland but moved to the city of Liverpool to live there for over ten years when i was 16 and I know just what a special city it is I can't help but go back there at least once a year to see how me old mates are doing and go to watch everton play (which I can barely ever do anymore) and basically I just want to thank you kellyoniel for posting this, it means allot to me to hear it after so long brought a tear to me eye. ;-(
It means a lot to me aswell mate i was brought up in liverpool to an out and out irish family all good evertonians, and as we all know this city might be in england but its irish to the core. nil satis, god bless.

great song and well sung , just to be picky, we dug the mersey tunnel boys way back in 1933, dug a hole in the ground until we found a hole called wallasey,,,, the 1930,s tunnel was the birkenhead tunnel , the wallasey one wasnt dug till 1971, the first tunnel ,the rail one was dug in 1886, bit of useless info, still a great song though :o)
Mr. Kelly, sir. Kudos to you for penning these words. I'm from Leeds & have no real affinity with either Liverpool or Ireland (great-grandma excepted) but I adore this song. I always assumed Luke kelly co-wrote it but I now feel obliged to credit your good self. An incredible vocal performance from Luke, especially his scouse 'dug an 'ole in the ground' Literally stops me in my tracks every time. If you never do anything else in your life, writing this song is an impressive enough legacy.
Hi dere Hobditch. Two of my nieces went to Leeds Univ. Cant be all bad! But on my O L'POOL WE LOVE YOU LP I sing about that May 1st 1965 FA Cup final: LFC 2 Leeds 1. Hate to remind yiz. I actually recorded I WISH I WAS BACK (Not WERE back. Gritch) for Folkways. MacColl and Peggy Seeger in the Chorus! Prefer Luke's version.
Not old enough to remember the 65 cup final but have seen it many times. Hunt/St. John with a Bremner equaliser inbetween. We let you have that one as there was a bit of a rare trophy famine at the 'Pool until '73! Like what ya saying, 'were' is nice and colloquial but 'was' is grammatically correct. Me grammar would've been proud, god bless her...
No, Hobbie! Both 'was' and 'were' are grammatically correct. BUT 'I wish I were back" is the SUBJUNCTIVE, indicating that my dream of returning to M'side is DOUBTFUL! 'I wish I was back' gives the sense that my return is quite possible.
Good to see LEEDS UTD heading back to higher places, where they belong. See the CLOUGH TV documentary?
ToffeeNoseJW: Luke didn't come to the game. We all met at the team's hotel in Dublin. Sure he and the Dubliners would have cheered on Dundalk, although, as yer know, Ireland has lotsa L'pool and Everton Fans. My family is SPLIT down the middle RED and BLUE! I was Keegan's co-agent when he came to Anfield. Happy days. BTW I belong to both supporters clubs. GO LIVERTON! stan kelly
somebody please, tell me how luke dose it?

Stan Kelly could write a tune. Great version of a beautiful song.
Luke had a cracking voice, very powerful.
bleo34 4 years ago 2
Bless youse, Oneil & Bleo. Stan Kelly here, himself, in person, like!
I wrote de WERDS but Leon Rosselson added that great tune. I have the meagre royalty statements to prove it!
I once introduced the Dubliners to BILL SHANKLY. I was travelling with the team for a game vs DUNDALK,
We was all supping de porter while Bill had lemonade. He told us IT'S NO A HEALTHY LIFE YERR LEADING
YET I outlived the bugger, and so did some of the Dubliners. I'll be 80 next Sep. owe it all to Guiness and Shags
