I'm thinking that the snake may have been kept in a temperature too cold for it. That would explain its lack of movement. Diamondbacks usually become very grumpy when handled.
@TheKraitman i wouldn't even say that the handling method was stupid it was more offa show/fail for more publicity but your right 1 fatal mistake and its him being rushed to the hospital
@Alf90100 C. atrox do seem to be a fair bit meaner than the eastern diamondbacks. Meanest I've seen has been the Prairie rattler. Not a friendly snake at all.
I think the snake has been cooled down so it could be handled. I guess it's possible to raise one from a baby to be tame, but it would still be too unpredictable for such a public display. Lowering its temperature is the only really safe way.
That snake could easily turn on his forearm if it wanted to when he picks it up two handed. So either this guy is handling an extremely docile snake, or he has had it defanged and the snake poses no real threat to him. I think the 2nd.
@JamesMcPatrick Defanged and to the public the rattlesnake is still a force to be reckoned with, yet the big guy seems mighty docile as everyone says.
@walk4trot2canter3 Professional snake handlers know better than to defang snakes. Venomous snakes use their venom for predigestion. Take that venom away, and they can get nasty infections from their food, causing a very slow and painful death.
@HerpGoddess have your friend hold the snake by the neck, take a screwdriver(flat or philips)get the critter to open its mouth w screwdriver, git yer plyers an breakem off,the two long ones on the top i believe, hell be pretty awnry after that so it would be best not to play w it for at least 24hrs,hell be pretty harmless after that. You cant cure herpers
They have the snake bite into a jar so the venom is gone and for that short period it had none so even if did bite him he wouldn't have died. Or they give the snake a drug to slow down the sense's
@G3ckobain Significantly bigger than that one. That EDB was just an average size adult. Under the right conditions, they can easily pass the 6 ft. mark.
@ihatepolitics91 He probabely defanged the snake and gave him some valiums.Only a matter of time before the snake will have his day on 1000 ways to die!!!
@ihatepolitics91 I agree ans EDR's go,it was pretty calm, and calm adults, that also eat,are hard to come by.But the handling method was compleatly stupid.he should have used the tail/hook method or had it tubed, free handling ANY venomous snake is stupid,it just a matter of time before this show off gits taged.
@ihatepolitics91 Eastern Diamondbacks [Crotalus adamanteus] generally are more docile, whereas Western Diamondbacks [Crotalus atrox] do tend to be much more defensive. Imo, holding a Western like that would have been a much bigger feat.
@GabbaGabbaPunkrocker It's probably captive bred, and therefore was never wild in the first place. And it's most likely very happy in its climate controlled vivarium, where it gets fed with a great deal more frequency in the wild, is safe from predators and has a nice flat rock to hide under, heaven for a snake. There's a reason why captive reptiles live MUCH longer lives than those in the wild.
@tonespinner It apears you know nothing of reptiles. A snake or any other rep need alot of time to warm up in the sun, therefor alot of reptiles got dark skin which absorbs heat easier. Also, as the snake werent literaly threatned, it didnt have any reason to try and bite him. If he squized it hard, belive me he would have two nice holes in his hand or leg
@KJT922010T Wrong. Fail. It's the small ones who are the most dangerous because they don't know how to stop the flow of venom and inject everything they have in you. Whereas the adults know to inject enough to paralyze you or discourage you from being so close to them. Don't reproduce.
@AKSpartanKiIIer Not necessarily true. Studies have shown that neonates are still capable of inflicting dry bites or lesser envenomations, and there have been many situations where adults have injected huge yields of venom, far beyond what would be needed even to kill a human. Being bitten by ANY age or species of medically significant snake can have variable effects-I've known of people riding out green mamba bites without antivenom (NOT ADVISABLE!) it really differs from person to person.
@DemonLDR You wouldn't get defensive about it would you? I may not be a snake handler but think I can safely say that comparing handling a venomous snake to a domesticated dog is a pretty stupid comparison. Pretty sure I still have freedom of speech so I'll say again I'd be willing to bet that snake is either defanged or has at least recently had it's venom milked out. If not that guy is pretty dumb in my opinion.
@endocry In trained hands, snakes are far less dangerous than domestic dogs. If you work with venomous snakes regular, you know they can (and often will) try to bite, so you don't put yourself in a position where you'll get bitten. Unlike snakes, dogs are trusted. People see them as part of the family. If a dog snaps, it's usually a suprise.
'If' the snake has somehow been doctored to make it safer to work with; whats the skill/entertainment in that? May as well dangle a draft excluder
@endocry Search "freehandling snake" on here. People do it. It's incredibly dangerous, but also a somewhat common and largely frowned upon part of the venomous reptile keeping hobby.
@Pentagram6 I don't disagree with you one bit. I am sure that he "can" and "does" handle 100% pure rattlers, I've seen vids of people doing it. I just personally believe that one he would use for exhibitions like that, especially being 10 ft away from little kids (liability), would be milked of it's venom and/or defanged.
@endocry I imagine it could possibly be a venomoid - surgically removed venom glands. Defanging isn't particularly common amongst even display animals because it's considered incredibly cruel to take away the snake's ability to eat on it's own, and I dunno, this guy's obviously a snake enthusiast and just looks like he cares for his animals too much - I know I couldn't do it to one of mine.

ok well keep in mind this is a praire rattler so probley an offshoot of the species but i know it was a hell of a lot more than 15 pounds not 100 but a lot more than 15 ive coughten fish bigger than that in resivours
That is about the stupidest thing I have ever heard. The largest recorded Eastern Diamonback, the largest snake in North America, is around 8 feet. I saw 7 footers at Camp Blanding (45 minutes from Jax, FL) all the time. I even cleared several from machine gun pits, as they would often fall into the pits and could not get out. Your 50 footer is not only a myth, it's a fairy tale. The largest snake in the world is the Anaconda, and they rarely reach 30 feet.
K... I don't want this guy to get hurt... or anyone. But when see someone voluntarily handle a rattle snake (especially for show) I can't help but feel like if he gets bit all he got was what he was asking for. On another note, I hear kids laughing in the background as he's "hammin it up" with the snake... lets not teach kids that deadly snakes are fun. Other than that... yeah, thats a big snake.
I remember a Paul Harvey story years ago, a texas buisness dude found out his partner in Chicago was poking his wife so he sent a rattler in a shoe box, FedEx. Guy opened it on his desk, and whammy..... bit in the throat and died.
had 4 dogs on my farm over the years, all were bitten, two of my dogs died.
I loose one or two calves a year to rattler bites. A baby calf just can take a bite.
I also have three cows have miscarrages in other words loose their unborn calf to snake bites yearly. The cost nationally must run into the millions, and we just can't kill them all, we tried.
south west Nebraska, we call rattler around here crawling land mines,
they strike without rattling, and a single rattler in 10 years along with offspring can produce 7,000 rattlers,
Nieghbor moves a portable shed that had been in that spot for 12 years, and he killed hundred, while many got away, he only had a 10o bullet, go to donze52 for some of my films.
@donze52 Ever consider king snakes? They eat rattlesnakes, and will keep them off your property... There are other ways rather than just killing snakes..I can understand that they are messing with your life, but that shouldn't mean you shouldn't at least try different methods..
@donze52 Wow, if that is not the most backwards thing I have heard in a while, I don't know what is. Really, I hope to god your daughter is not an actual scientist, because she sounds like a complete retard. Future generations will curse your generation for not using a god damned condom, and creating stupid, inbred idiots like that.
More people are bitten by their dog per year then by rattlesnakes, so I suppose we should start slaughtering dogs as well?
You do not prove wisdom by using language that is evil. If you disagree, fine, but my daughter has a PHD, and her wisdom is not clouded. We live is a nation that is free, so say evil. I will not only to pray you never need anti venom.
for it does not always work, My best friend found out the hard way
Dogs attack and kill 1000s of people every year. WAY more than people get bit by venomous snakes in the US. Looking at those stats alone, dogs are much more dangerous so maybe you should go after them if you care so much.
Your speaking apples an oranges, dogs can and are not only pets for man's best friend, yes there are bad ones, and I use my home made tear gas I grow for that
Rattlers however cose me hard cash, and endanger my pets and family.
To get bit can run $50,000 now days, and I can't afford health insurance, hospital says they have the right to let me die or anyone including children.
Well then you should obviously move away...be it the city or where venomous snakes do not exist. It's clear you can't handle living where you do especially since you're also poor enough to not be able to take care of yourself or your family. You sound like a real man. LOL
If a gang or a murderer was in your area, would you move, all we can do is kill everyone we find. No I can't wipe them out,
but you might look at my film on youtube, crawling land mines of Nebraska.
of course you will not change your mind for you have not lived my life, any more than I will change mine, so God be with you and keep you and your family safe.
reminds me of people who shoplifted from me, about 700 in the last 27 years at the smallest store in McCook, but I never turned one into the cops, I just work a night job, and work as a hired hand on the ranch, plus weekends for a farm.
to Catch up, Bless you, and keep your garden hoe sharp.
I dunno, I wouldn't EVER toss my hook away from me. If anything, I'd set it down by my foot. You never know when you need to drop the snake and regain control with the hook. He's lucky this lovely snake was calm; it had probably been handled plenty times before.
@S0XF0X Yeah, that freaked the hell out of me as well. I generally try and keep my back to the wall where the hooks hang when I'm handling, so if I do need a backup hook for any reason I don't have to reach over the pissed off venomous snake to get it!
@panga3a They're only as unpredictable as any animal - all animals think for themselves, so aren't all animals a bit unpredictable? Snakes, if anything, can actually be quite predictable if you know what to look for. It's all about being aware.
not from texas, r u. rattlesnakes r rarely aggressive, n there r rattlesnake round ups in texas every spring. no de-fanged, no pets, (omg,,,how funny) just plain ol rattlesnakes!
@Pentagram6 i thik our talking about devenoming.. another point to the argument is the snakes venom is (atleast for vipers and pit vipers) a part f the digestive system. there fore making any eating at al unpleasent
dsg10stt, go read your bible. Learn about jesus so you can shut your religious ass up! Don't preach your fucking sickening, outdated, self-contradicting, power hungry bible stories to me. Religion holds us back as a species, remember that.
Exactly show them nature. Take them out side and try to find a wild rattlesnake. Let them look at it at a distance without bothering it. Also "OMG", what are you a 16 year old girl texting on her phone with her friends about the shoes you just got at the mall?
Hmm...not a milion miles removed from Steve Irwin and look what happened to him - took one chance too many. I hope Steve Scruggs doesn't fall similarly. Unless pest control or research science, no-one really ought to handle these things.
Not too long ago there was a 9'1" rattlesnake killed on the Hanford Reservation in Washington. I've only seen one photo, but would like to see more. That was a huge snake.
@codzilla12 It's a whole lot more than just gripping...it's more of a firm grip than a tight one, and you have to hold them correctly as they're capable of slipping fangs out the sides of their mouths or even through their bottom jaw to stick you. Plus they can strike in pretty much any direction at lightning speed with bang-on accuracy, so getting to the pinning part is difficult in the first place. Regardless, congrats on the catch and glad you got off unscathed!
Haha thanks man. It was in my driveway (I live in Arizona) and I didn't want to kill him or cause him any harm so I put on some thick gloves, manned up, and grabbed him.
Snake - OK, Im taken out of the dark place...OK, looking around looking at all my potential meals...WHAT THE HECK I'M FLYING and my meals like me! Oh crap back in the dark place. Can I just bite your hand...just as a sample....
I do alot of herping and handle alot of nonvenomous snakes I find and almost never get a bite. Never had a desire to attempt to free handle a venomous snake. I'm sure I could, but I think 8 vials of Crofab at 8k a pop, loss of digits, and a trip to the emergency room to explain why I decided to pick up a rattlesnake isn't worth the 'wouldn't it be neat' factor.
Not only would I caution kids to not handle poisonous snakes, I would hope that they avoid them completely.
On the other hand I am also not arrogant enough to pass any judgment on "professionals" that handle snakes for a living. If they need equipment, they know when to use it. If they need it, and don't use it. They are the ones that have to deal with the outcome.
Yeah every snake has its own personality. If you can read their body language you can really push the envelope on how you handle them. but its always dangerous
Eastern diamondbacks, from my experience, are fairly calm even when bothered like this one. Some snakes require equipment and some dont. I've used hooks on nonvenomous and freehanded venomous before. You just need to know the snake your handling. He obviously knows this snake and what hes doing with it.
I'm thinking that the snake may have been kept in a temperature too cold for it. That would explain its lack of movement. Diamondbacks usually become very grumpy when handled.

The proportions are impossible. A nine foot snake weighing 97 pounds
would be ten pounds per foot. I also found a page from a zoo that gives
a formula for the length-weight relationship of rattlesnakes which
states that ?a seven-foot wild rattler would weigh about 15 pounds and
an eight-foot snake would weigh 23 pounds.? According to this formula
a nine-foot snake could not possibly weigh 97 pounds.

they strike without rattling, and a single rattler in 10 years along with offspring can produce 7,000 rattlers,
Nieghbor moves a portable shed that had been in that spot for 12 years, and he killed hundred, while many got away, he only had a 10o bullet, go to donze52 for some of my films.
donze52 2 years ago
@donze52 Ever consider king snakes? They eat rattlesnakes, and will keep them off your property... There are other ways rather than just killing snakes..I can understand that they are messing with your life, but that shouldn't mean you shouldn't at least try different methods..
kandixcorpse 2 years ago
what is the difference if I kill every rattler I see, and buying king snakes to do it.
the key is to cut there numbers, Rattlers kill more people yearly than sharks do in 200 years. My daughter the scientist says,
Evil Reptile, future generations will curse us for not getting rid of them after this nation falls, and anti venom is a thing of the past.
donze52 2 years ago
@donze52 Wow, if that is not the most backwards thing I have heard in a while, I don't know what is. Really, I hope to god your daughter is not an actual scientist, because she sounds like a complete retard. Future generations will curse your generation for not using a god damned condom, and creating stupid, inbred idiots like that.
More people are bitten by their dog per year then by rattlesnakes, so I suppose we should start slaughtering dogs as well?
kandixcorpse 2 years ago
You do not prove wisdom by using language that is evil. If you disagree, fine, but my daughter has a PHD, and her wisdom is not clouded. We live is a nation that is free, so say evil. I will not only to pray you never need anti venom.
for it does not always work, My best friend found out the hard way
donze52 2 years ago
Dogs attack and kill 1000s of people every year. WAY more than people get bit by venomous snakes in the US. Looking at those stats alone, dogs are much more dangerous so maybe you should go after them if you care so much.
IAmaPersion 2 years ago
Your speaking apples an oranges, dogs can and are not only pets for man's best friend, yes there are bad ones, and I use my home made tear gas I grow for that
Rattlers however cose me hard cash, and endanger my pets and family.
To get bit can run $50,000 now days, and I can't afford health insurance, hospital says they have the right to let me die or anyone including children.
donze52 2 years ago
Well then you should obviously move away...be it the city or where venomous snakes do not exist. It's clear you can't handle living where you do especially since you're also poor enough to not be able to take care of yourself or your family. You sound like a real man. LOL
IAmaPersion 2 years ago
If a gang or a murderer was in your area, would you move, all we can do is kill everyone we find. No I can't wipe them out,
but you might look at my film on youtube, crawling land mines of Nebraska.
of course you will not change your mind for you have not lived my life, any more than I will change mine, so God be with you and keep you and your family safe.

Wow man, you really are an idiot. Can't help but just laugh at you.
IAmaPersion 2 years ago
I disagree with you, but I do not call you names, which one of us is mature?
I fight a war out on the plains of Nebraska, and one of the enemies to my family and friends are rattle snakes,
I pray you and your family are blessed by GOD, and show mercy to us who work the land.
donze52 2 years ago
Now you're just sounding like a paranoid, religious nut. Starting to actually feel sorry for you.
IAmaPersion 2 years ago
YOU need not feel anything,
reminds me of people who shoplifted from me, about 700 in the last 27 years at the smallest store in McCook, but I never turned one into the cops, I just work a night job, and work as a hired hand on the ranch, plus weekends for a farm.
to Catch up, Bless you, and keep your garden hoe sharp.

I dunno, I wouldn't EVER toss my hook away from me. If anything, I'd set it down by my foot. You never know when you need to drop the snake and regain control with the hook. He's lucky this lovely snake was calm; it had probably been handled plenty times before.
S0XF0X 2 years ago
@S0XF0X Yeah, that freaked the hell out of me as well. I generally try and keep my back to the wall where the hooks hang when I'm handling, so if I do need a backup hook for any reason I don't have to reach over the pissed off venomous snake to get it!

People who handle unpredictable animals like snakes have only themselves to blame if they get cranky and strike.
panga3a 2 years ago
@panga3a They're only as unpredictable as any animal - all animals think for themselves, so aren't all animals a bit unpredictable? Snakes, if anything, can actually be quite predictable if you know what to look for. It's all about being aware.

News flash, you can defang a snake...
xordan2 2 years ago
@xordan2 You can, but it's incredibly cruel and usually they'll stop eating and starve themselves to death.

OMG.. are you serious? How else are you going to teach kids about nature? Showing them first hand experience is the best way.
xXGoDzMaRiNeXx 2 years ago
Exactly show them nature. Take them out side and try to find a wild rattlesnake. Let them look at it at a distance without bothering it. Also "OMG", what are you a 16 year old girl texting on her phone with her friends about the shoes you just got at the mall?

xXGoDzMaRiNeXx 2 years ago
Rattlesnakes are not aggressive, but will strike when threatened. So, best thing to do, not get too close. But still, it's a very neat snake.
Chris9017 3 years ago
hognose anit true hot snakes. iv herd stories mangroves dont live long cos they die of stress and plus there arboral im more of a ground type person
melster16jason 3 years ago
the main reason for mangroves not liveing long is cause there most all are imported and are super jacked with oaracites and are dehydrated
avbiker 3 years ago
Hmm...not a milion miles removed from Steve Irwin and look what happened to him - took one chance too many. I hope Steve Scruggs doesn't fall similarly. Unless pest control or research science, no-one really ought to handle these things.
MatlockJack 3 years ago 5
Not too long ago there was a 9'1" rattlesnake killed on the Hanford Reservation in Washington. I've only seen one photo, but would like to see more. That was a huge snake.
ClarkeD120000 3 years ago
I caught a 4ft (almost) Rattlesnake with my bare hands one time, the trick is to grip the back of the head really tight.
codzilla12 3 years ago
i wouldnt want to try it myself i dont think
jesuswuzahippy 3 years ago
Yeah, not a very good idea on my part, lol.
codzilla12 3 years ago
still, at least u got ur arms still... i hope XD
jesuswuzahippy 3 years ago
Haha, I have them still.
codzilla12 3 years ago
I'm surprised he/she's still around to tell the story, to be honest.
MatlockJack 3 years ago
@codzilla12 It's a whole lot more than just gripping...it's more of a firm grip than a tight one, and you have to hold them correctly as they're capable of slipping fangs out the sides of their mouths or even through their bottom jaw to stick you. Plus they can strike in pretty much any direction at lightning speed with bang-on accuracy, so getting to the pinning part is difficult in the first place. Regardless, congrats on the catch and glad you got off unscathed!
Pentagram6 1 year ago
@Pentagram6
Haha thanks man. It was in my driveway (I live in Arizona) and I didn't want to kill him or cause him any harm so I put on some thick gloves, manned up, and grabbed him.

machenga 3 years ago
I do alot of herping and handle alot of nonvenomous snakes I find and almost never get a bite. Never had a desire to attempt to free handle a venomous snake. I'm sure I could, but I think 8 vials of Crofab at 8k a pop, loss of digits, and a trip to the emergency room to explain why I decided to pick up a rattlesnake isn't worth the 'wouldn't it be neat' factor.
M44resto 3 years ago
Not only would I caution kids to not handle poisonous snakes, I would hope that they avoid them completely.
On the other hand I am also not arrogant enough to pass any judgment on "professionals" that handle snakes for a living. If they need equipment, they know when to use it. If they need it, and don't use it. They are the ones that have to deal with the outcome.
bugmanchad 3 years ago
Yeah every snake has its own personality. If you can read their body language you can really push the envelope on how you handle them. but its always dangerous
robertalleva 3 years ago
Eastern diamondbacks, from my experience, are fairly calm even when bothered like this one. Some snakes require equipment and some dont. I've used hooks on nonvenomous and freehanded venomous before. You just need to know the snake your handling. He obviously knows this snake and what hes doing with it.
