  • Dt took only biggest stars of the drum, yes they are great but this was only the publicity to make it fun and just as famous drummers took cool because it was the easiest and less well-known already as good drummers are even better because there is no need to be fame and cash as the me down. All these sessions were done with them as a show for American children.Hail Poland and real good music

  • I feel like it's time for another live dvd...

  • great skills..terribly boring..

  • @lisacutieful How about you try doing that and then say it's boring.

  • Very Bozzio-esque but FAAASSSSSTTT!!!

  • Were those just constant 16th note one handed rolls at 2:10?

  • @Danyistheman YES HE'S A BEAST.

  • @Danyistheman dude fuck that shit, 1:54 one handed 32nd notes :S alternating hands

  • this bitch does not touch anything not that damn worm mike portnoy better than him without a doubt!

  • If God had a name, it would be Mike.

  • both mikes are awesome. now stfu.

  • asla portnoy un yerini dolduramayacaksın.

  • The Best !!!

  • Mike Mangini is a phenomenal drummer.

But i cant keep track of this solo.

That never happens when I listen to Portnoy.

  • Mike is none of my favorites drummers around the world...i think that many increibles stuffs will come with this master drummer inside the Dream!!!!

  • this guys got four seperate quadrants of his brain man! one for each limb.

  • yyyyeeahhhhh!

  • Anyone who says there is no creativity in this solo must be brain dead in the percussion department.

  • i think this solo is way better then portnoy ever did. portnoy was to me just insane drum rolls as to where i hear an awesome beat in this drum solo. That's my kind of style. its more of a grove feeling to it. But don't get me wrong portnoy can create some masterpeices but his solos to are kind of boring. This solo is awesome.

  • i know i may be cursed at or disliked about my comment but this solo has nothing special in it other than mangini's crazy independence and ridiculously fast sticking so to me it is nothing but a fucking masturbation. don't get me wrong, i love both mikes but portnoy is a far more musical drummer than mangini, even in his soloing in my opinion. like it or not, portnoy has definitely a far stronger grip of musical sense and feel even if he was starting to repeat himself a bit lately.

  • @RIdrummer96 he's NOT in OSI and disliked it himself :D

  • @vinesworth Thank you,

I will now live the remainder of life with the new found knowledge that mike portnoy is no longer in OSI.

    Once again, thank you

  • mangini is really damn good, really... but i personally prefer portnoy... the thrill of original line up always got extra kick... imagine ritchie blackmore plays for DP again...

  • Yes Petrucci wrote the drums ( on a drum machine) because they had no drummer yet. Mangini was given the tape and Petrucci said I don't even know if a drummer can actually play these drums. The first practice Mangini had them all down perfectly!!!!!

  • @bartab420 Actually, John admitted in interviews that the drums he composed were simple placeholders because he wouldn't want to take the part of a real drummer, and Mike then embelished and reworked the drums himself. It's all Mike, not John.

  • Mike Mangini has a far better musical "resume" and is obviously better technically, and i think hes a genius

  • @JackMehoff845 the guy is a fucking rocket scientist of course he is a genius haha

  • I enjoy Portnoy's sound better. Somehow drums sounded very boring on ADTE...

  • @septimusdsx John Petrucci, Jordan Ruddess and John Myung wrote the drums through a drum machine for all the songs. The had Mike play it. Mike did not write any drum parts. Regardless of that I'm sure the next album Mike will be writing the drums.

  • best solo!!!

  • A lot of speed but not a lot of variety and CREATIVITY (which is what matters first). I think I like Mike P better unless I see something interesting.

  • Hes really good but I think mike portnoy sets the bar higher

  • Thi is Mike mangani?

  • @RIdrummer96

We'll see what creative force MM is when the next album after A dramatic turn of events completes its cycle. No one has inspired more young musicians to play drums like Mike Portnoy, due to his incredibly innovative and creative compositions. If MM

can come even Somewhat close to what MP has established in the progressive music industry, JP choice of MM will be somewhat vindicated.

I think no one can truly replace MP at DT

  • old PORTNOY

  • awesome but boring..

  • People may dislike because he has not enough hair yet :)

  • Mangini is awesome !!! *o*

  • Good quality video btw! Well done.

  • But I like him. I think he's a good replacer of Portnoy.

  • Technically he is good, but the solo is too long and becomes boring somehow. But that's just my opinion. I like Neil Pearts drumsolo more. It's got more in it. Force, jazz etc.

  • Mangini's limb independence is breath taking. What an animal.

  • Honestly, the stuff Mangini has always been able to do, and Portnoy, STILL can't do, Portnoy was never better than Mangini, but Portnoy is definitely up in the ranks with Mangini. I'm actually on the fence about the choice, it works, but I think Mangini is TOO talented for Dream Theater.

  • he looks like Carles Puyol from this angle

  • @baztard1390 At first I didn't know who Carles Puyol was. Then I wikied his name, saw his picture, and laughed out loud. hahhaa.

  • Aw man i really wanted to hear that huge Zildjian gong behind him :(.

  • When i see it live i toucht he was making a overture for 6:00

  • I Completely Agree with you on that

  • cleanest one handed drum roll ever

  • EXACTLY!!!!

  • Yawn, Yawn,..... Portnoy does all that in just one song... PFFFF!!! This guy can barely keep a beat! I say again Yawn!!!!!

  • What was Slipknot's drummers name?

After seeing this video i forgot it.

  • I was freakin stoked when I heard they picked Mangini!!

Still am too because he is the s@#$!!

  • Nuno Battencourt picked him, Steve Vai picked him..

so I'm not surprised if John petruci picked him too..:))

  • In Soviet Russia, drums play you.

  • Holy Shit! I knew he was good but not THAT good! I am impressed. This should be proof that he didn't join just to drink DT's kool-aid.

  • Mike Mangini I s awesome and I see why he won the job. Marco Minneman SMOKED his ASS in the auditions though. They already decided Mangini was the guy before Minneman or the others auditioned I think!!!

  • Petrucci, Mangini, Donati..

I guess italians do it better..

    (:

  • u could really FEEL the diference in dream threaters newest album compared to albums made when portnoy was in the band. I know mangini is a great drummer, i went to one of the newest dream theater concerts, but theres something missing in "a dramatic turn of events"...for me at least

  • @RIdrummer96 Yeah for one thing the mix of the album. You can hardly hear the tom drums. Also, Mangini never wrote the drum parts so some sections are a little plain (double bass gets a little repetitive) Portnoy's signature grooves are also gone.

  • @RIdrummer96 I know what you mean,They will NEVER be the same again, but still enjoy they're music, though its alittle bland now!!!

  • @Billiam886 bland in a drumming aspect I mean the rest of them sound good ;/

  • Can you imagine would have happened if Derek Roddy had been chosen as the drummer for dream theater?

  • que es un negosio o una bateria?

  • y en chile cuando??

  • MIKE TURBO MIX: /watch?v=QBmz39y5_28

  • Can somebody send me a message and tell me when Mangini first entered the band, damn...this is killer! Thank's.

  • @nimitzjr1 well you can just search the spirit carries on part 1 here on youtube and you can see his first audition and the date is probably shwon so about a week after that week.

  • I was kinda sceptic when I heard they choose him, but man, hes one fast motherfucker! Awsome!

  • @yourka16 Fast and Styleless too,,.......Yawn!!!

  • First time I realized how good Mangini is was when I heard him playing with Steve Vai. Vai doesn't pick any amateurs into his band. Mike is an awesome drummer, it's matter of opinion which of the Mike's you like most.

  • Groove at the beginning reminds me at Dave Weckl - The Chicken

  • Ofc he is amazing. He's a record holder for World Fastest Drummer

  • @lingaswaran

Yeah, but music isn't a sport.

  • No.1

  • listen to the foot pattern he is playing on his feet at 1:02 and soloing over it amazing try that portnoy you will fail!!!!

  • Double bass drum and rolling alone does not make you an excellent drummer, with practice most drummers can play this entire solo with ease in a matter of a few years

  • @MindstormEDM Ya i've heard girls that good!!!

  • Amazing drummer for an amazing band. Better than Portnoy..... Yes!!

  • Esse mike Mangini e um lixo não consigo escutar essa porcaria ae sem graça...

aprende com o teu pai aqui

    the best mike Portnoy foreverrrrrrrrrr

  • so this is wat my teacher told me about. i still like portnoy more but this is nice

  • They made the right choice, other than he being amazing, he clicks with the band, I mean, can you see any of the others that tried out actually IN Dream Theater?

  • Man you should see this dude Lars Ulrich, he can play them drums....

  • 1:48 - 2:03 - LOOK MOM....NO HANDS

  • When Mangini entered the band, me and many others were simply like "nice pick, he's just as amazing as Portnoy". But as the time marches on, and we listen to stuff like this and all the stuff he's doing with Dream Theater, the realization is almost shocking for me: he is better than Portnoy. He's proven himself, and still has a long way to go. This is, at least, my honest opinion, and I don't blame any Portnoy fans for idealizing him, but I suggest you start valuing Mangini more fairly.

  • @SpaceDyeDream i have to agree, i'm more of a death metal drummer, you know, blast beats and double bass haha:P but i can easily see mike mangini is easily as good if not better than portnoy, but portnoy as influenced me more as to what progdrumming includes. He certainly has his own personality, so does mangini, but he has never touched me in the same way... though he truly is worthy the spot. Hails to them both in my oppinion:)

  • @SpaceDyeDream Amen to that! The guys a monster. nuff said! He's at a one of a kind level.. Technically, this guy's untouchable! Musically, he fits dream theater so what more can we ask for?!

  • @SpaceDyeDream Maybe you are right, but it's really pianful for me to see Dream Theater without Mike Portnoy.

  • @SpaceDyeDream To be truthfully honest, to the normal ear who listens casually to music, you wouldn't hear the difference in the playstyle Mangini has compared to mike portnoy. Mike Mangini does not really try anything out of the ordinary, he just follows what Petrucci plays where as you get mike portnoy, he was the heart of the band. To me, it doesn't seem like it anymore. Drums are not what controls the band anymore at this point. And you're probably gonna see, that I prefer portnoy.

  • @SpaceDyeDream And you discovered that now? I've always knew that Mangini is better than Portnoy. Mangini is a master of polyrhythm and double bass technique, Portnoy can't match his qualities, that's a fact!

  • @ter50 Why is it a matter of being better then MP, this solo sucked, I've heard girls play that good, sounded messy to me, kept loosing the beat,.... Yawn!

  • @Billiam886 Portnoy does the same things since his early days. His solos are always the same: crash boom bang with no groove. If you don't like Mangini ok everyone has his own tastes, but who has a good experience with drums knows that Mangini kicks Portnoy's ass.

  • @SpaceDyeDream but remember that Mangini just forward the spirit of Portnoy..!

  • @SpaceDyeDream His technique can surpass any drummer in this world. He's just like an alien.

  • i agree with spacedyedream, this is a greast solo by mangini, he can really hold his own against any1, doubt virgil or thomas or minneman r that far ahead in technique

  • Mike Portnoy FOREVER! is the best

  • If you are not MM, you can't play this

  • Mike Portnoy KING - KING - KING -

  • there he is~ good job. i wish i could play that way~ thumbs up from Philippines ^^ have some visit here too^^

  • 3:00 -> Looks like Mangini is in heaven and glowing hands are calling him down.

  • nobody wants to admit it, but its true, he is better than Portnoy!!

  • Amazing solo although i still prefer mikes :/

  • What a fucking machine!!! \m/

  • Those rhythms on the octobans were fucking clinical. Still think they look ridiculous up high though ;)

  • this mangina guy can play them skins

  • Mike Mangini. BIG choice! ;)

  • At the end I was thinking that he could take out any army if you gave him a pair of nunchuks

  • @TSchellhous Hahaha. :)

  • What a climax !

  • Know the best part about this solo? 'Gini didn't have to stop playing every 90 seconds or so to stand up and wait for applause to feed his gargantuan ego, like....well, you know...

  • @USAon3 like who ?? lars ulrich ??? ..

  • @USAon3 If you could drum like he can, you could afford these poses, too man :) you can tell at the same time that the whole idea about playing a solo was an egoistic act from him, but the true is, that he just deserves the ovations for the performance he does, and for the years of playing a reaching the level he is now. Mike is a goddamn great drummer, indeed!

  • @Metalomaniac666 Trust me, my comment is not casting any negativity on 'Gini. I was referring to the OTHER Mike. You know - the drama queen.

And Mangini playing a solo is no more an 'egotistical act' than when John P. or Jordan plays one.

  • Is it just me, or is his drum set too small?

  • Fact: Mike Mangini is more technical than portnoy. If your a die hard Portnoy fan thats awesome but dont let it effect the reality of the situation. Mangini is a highly skilled clinician on the drums and plays all of Mikes parts effortlessly and musically, not to mention DT's new cd has sick drum parts. Portnoy is still an amazing drummer but look up Mangini's past shit and you will quickly realize this man is elite. And he's a super nice guy

  • OMFG!

  • Another configuration and logistical headache continues for the DT's Drum Tech..... ha...ha.

  • I don't care if he isn't as technical as portnoy, his personality makes up for it. I mean come on, he even seems nicer than petrucci! Oh, and it doesn't hurt to be the world's fastest drummer.

  • hahaha what the heck! Its so good but so lame at the same time. I have never even thought about having a bunch on toms on a second rack! But thats most likely cuz I suck and he is professional. Ha i'm in two minds.

  • hahah look at how many camera phones are recording this...lol

  • @ThoughtfulAtheist actualy 9 cameras ( less/more )

  • @diamondmm I got 12 at my cursory count...and you have to imagine this is just whats in view of THIS dude's camera.

  • I dont like this solo...I LOVE IT!!! Wasnt sure he was going to be able to live up to MP but he's doing a hell of a job and he's starting to grow on me and I feel DT made the best decision keeping him. Glad he's keeping this band at the top of the greatest bands who ever lived.

  • I saw this guy in Atlanta Wednesday night. October 19. He's modified the solo a little, but he is the best rock drummer I have ever seen.

  • DT is nothing without Mike Portnoy... the new album has good flow and guitars and all but it misses the flair mike gives to it... please get rid of this guy and bring back MP...

  • @KoMDraegast ......Waaaaaa, I want MP back, .shut your cry baby mouth.....what your missing is the drums too loud in th mix...now its how it should be....."This guy" Mangini has great drumming on the cd and on top of that, the capabilities to learn all MP's parts to a T..for the fans....a humble drummer..he left his ego at the door.....Its guys like you, "MP is the best", "MP is DT", " DT is not the same w/out MP"...that gave MP his ego to begin with....Guess what...He aint comin back..HAHAHA!!

  • @mikeybbdrummin Good ! Chow To Him......Hope he enjoys not being in the biggest band in the world.

Mangini Is Magic & DT is now moving forward without him so he can go suck a lemon in the meantime & scratch his head a little.

    Welcome M.M.

  • @KoMDraegast "he flair mike gives to it"

what would that be? his ad nauseum orgy of goth blast beats? His need to be over-mic'd until the rest of the band sounds like an afterthought?

See, the point people like you overlook is that there are actually four other people in this band. You think they're "nothing" and there is no "flair" because you can actually hear them on this album - not the MP Ego Show.

  • He played the same solo in NYC last week.. truly amazing this guy!

  • es una bestia muy salvaje este tio ta quemado, ya no quiero tocar bateria...

  • If you haven't already, you should check The Spirit Carries On videos from Dream Theater which cover the auditions and the reaction of the band to Mike leaving. You can see the passion Mangini puts to the stuff. It's awesome, they did pick the best choice, he is not only a kick ass musician, but he also is a real member of DT.

  • amazing drummer fantastic and great guy awsome mike mangini

  • his single hand roll is magnificent! damnnnnnnnnn jizzzzzzzzzzzz

  • If it wasn't for Mangini I would have fallen asleep at the Beacon last week. Terrible set list plus they played a few acoustic songs..WTF that was LAME

  • Great recording. You can hear all the notes he's playing.

  • I graduated Berkeley with honors and had the pleasure of being taught by this man.He is heads and shoulders above Portnoy..simple.His Theory, his technique...flawless.When people say"oh Lombardo or Menza should have tried out"...Dave Lombardo is not even in the same breathe as this man,and I am huge Slayer fan. There are about 4 drummers in the world that can hold their own with Mike.Minneman,Billy Cobham,Dave Weckel, and Arthur Kutcher

  • @littlefuzzer No love for neil peart?

  • @nikovan I was going to mention Peart, but I thought I would get bashed for it.Anyway..Neil Peart is awesome.

  • @littlefuzzer Technicaly, he is better than Portnoy, but the stuff portnoy wrote for DT... Dont think this guy will ever do something that good.

  • @xXneleTHEkreleXx Give him a chance. MP had 25 years to prove himself. You're right in saying that's not something easily forgotten, but DT wouldn't replace him with just anybody. We have lots of time to enjoy what will come from DT yet.

  • @littlefuzzer You're a lucky, lucky dude. :)

  • @littlefuzzer And maybe Coliauta...

  • @littlefuzzer It is obvious that You are a fan of MM, and that is ok. MM has some speed recordings maybe (somebody already have breakíng them, as it will always happen), but it is not all of drumming, or music itself.

I think that MP has his own style, and a great ideas, he is great and strong person and he has done more than 2 decades history with DT, and he is partly guilty for the thing that drummers are more "in the spot" nowadays - as You can see when looking these discussions...

  • 1:48 What is happening? Is he doing a super-fast one-handed roll and switching hands, or is he recording a sample? He reaches up and does something with his hand.

  • @minusjason hes doing the gravity blast one handed roll.

  • f88k man - each of his limbs is soooooOo damn independent and incredible !

  • I'll remember that. All restaurant critics must be top chefs, all film critics must be top actors/directors/writers/producers, and all listeners of music must keep their mouths shut unless they've got something on Youtube better than the video they are commenting on....... An excellent and logical rebuttal put forward there. Keep it up.

  • holy shit, what a monster

  • i find the number of smartphones filming this miracle offensive.

  • he's extremely gifted technically, but he's too rigid. portnoy isn't as "good", but he's definitely smoother and more fluid than mangini. in any case, DT made a good choice.

  • Maybe a polyrythm god with four hands gave birth to him?

  • Mike Portnoy could never be as great as Mangini. Portnoy was out of his league in DT. Hell, he couldn't even get Rev's parts right, and pooped all over a7x's songs.

  • Please guys some of DT Fans are fed up of bad critics some people makes on Mike Mangini . Let him do his proofs in DT. Jordan , John, John and James aren't stupid they mad a great choice !!! Also we're all sad of Mike Portnoy's departure but we must think of the future of the band. Mike Mangini is a great player he has a playing close to portnoy. To myself i just want to trus him and try to do the same.I' m sorry but i want to say that!! May DT continue to invite us in the dream!!

  • DT is a bad influence when it comes to drums size... :(

  • Dream Theater fans, please be aware that this guy TAUGHT at the school Mike Portnoy ATTENDED. Not only did he teach there, but he was highly respected by all of the other professionals that teach there. He's not only an incredible drummer but he is an incredibly intelligent person. He's a really nice guy. . . my credibility? I was a student of his. muffukka

  • @pricesmithmusic "He's not only an incredible drummer but he is an incredibly intelligent person."

He's a taught programmer and participated in some missile development and a nervous system research project. :)

  • @alkalomadtan he did! And I'm really jealous cause that is really cool.

  • This solo isn't hard to play. It's impossible.

  • @crzgfx Yep...

  • @crzgfx

haha man, I loved Mike Portnoy, and he will always be one of the world's greatest, but Mike Mangini is so amazing that listening to him play for too long can knock a few screws loose in your head. simply stunning he is.

  • @crzgfx It's not imnpossible! Mike Mangini played it! Lol!

  • @arroyomusic No, I think he hypnotized us so we think that he can play it.

  • He is sat where Thomas Lang should be!

There are only a few people who can produce a technical yet musical drum solo which is also entertaining...... and judging by that, Mike Mangini is part of the long list of those who cannot.

  • @tmaxwell8383 ok, i'm glad i'm not the only one who thinks so, i just don't like the style of drumming he does, he is talented but it just sounds kind of boring

  • @tmaxwell8383 Can you? I'd really want to see that from someone who criticizes a musical genious like Mangini..
