I think that it's not bad to download songs from Youtube when you're trying to know the artist. If you like them THEN you sort of feel obligated to buy the CD, because you want to hear the better versions of the songs you loved, because you want to give back to the artist what you took, etc. Take whatever reason you think it's best.
