As i was looking at that it looks like this is basically a flat candle with wax and wick/cloth all mixed up in a disc with an accelerant added. And the wax lends it to being water resistant.. what a good idea!!!! You're about to get at nice order from me this weekend, sir :)
Dave, That stuff looks COOL AS HELL!. I'm going to have to order at least one can for each of my disaster bags. And then one or two for my camping kit!.
I'm glad to see you endorse a product that could possibly save your life. I can start a fire using a bow and string and by many other bushcraft methods, but if my life depended on it and there was a lighter, a can of gas and a rag I'd use it. However, this stuff is compact enough to easily carry and multipurpose enough to justify carry. I will be getting me a tin or two.
When you put it back in the tin the heat probably melted some of the accelerant from the unused piece on top and absorbed it, which explains the flame but is a good thing for second fire. Try an empty tin to see if it really is charcloth. Either way a second fire is easy if you put back with the other pieces, and maybe even allow a third or fourth fire doing the same.
I just ordered some of that because of your vid. Would you suggest tearing it in quarters and adding it to the nest I know that it burns for 45 min but I think I would use it sparingly? just a thought.
I'm a huge fan of your videos and even an even bigger fan of your Discovery Channel show. I never miss one. It occurred to me in this video that when you put the disk back in the original container with other disks, you might very well have caused a new round of the accelerant to adhere to the disk, thereby causing the flame on the second attempt. Great product, however...thanks for all you do!
@snakeeyes3211 yeah but i gotta wait a year or two until they let me work somewhere, and either way the only way to pay is by credit card and I dont have one.
I was inspired by this video so I tried to replicate it with household items and was successful. I melted down vaseline in double boiler and dipped 2" cotton circles in it. It looks almost identical and burns the same. One burned for 10 minutes before I finally put it out. It probably could have gone another couple minutes. Thanks Dave for inspiring all of us try try new things for the "Common Man" However, anymore, I don't think there is anything common about self reliance.
You're awesome Dave!!! I am impressed by how you would go out of your way to help out someone just starting out. It shows real sportsmanship. I love what you do. I wish there were more people more willing to do that.
this is pretty much what i once made for three day scout/orienteering competition. the weather report was rain all the time and i knew i needed something to start a fire with that wouldnt mind getting wet... so i soaked some cotton swabs in 80% alcohol and covered with beeswax (took some tries to get it right). it worked really well, but dint have the burn time of this product. plus its nice to know that now i can just buy one and dont have to mess around making it :D
whats a better methoud, striking with the spine of the knife or the true cutting blade. I know you can chip or pit the blade, but ive heard and seen it both ways?????
I have a common man recipe that I have been using for a while. Not sure if it will catch with a ferro rod but if you catch it with a lighter a small piece burns for a very long time. Not sure the exact time. Tomorrow I will take a chunk out of my kit measure and light it and repost.

Dave just want to say thanks! Bushcraft is not about selling corporate made products(like some other TV personalities ) but is a mindset. Your vids on the common man approach. I got mine quite a while ago when they first came out - still precisely the same as when they came. I suspect after nuclear war it'll be cockroaches and this stuff left.
there's a youtube user called "chickenbonewatt" ---> "Wax firestarter - awesome method" and he made an interesting compact firestarter using paraffin wax, dryer lint, and a paper towel tube. also if you take a lil bit of chocolate you can rub it on say a bottom of a pop(soda) can. It will make an excellent signal mirror...and depending on the angle of it to the sun on dry grass it will catch fire...eventually
Mix vasceline into a cotton ball. When ready to light, rip it open, light, and watch that thing burn forever. It is probably cheaper than this product.
Can't compare it. I do that all the time, and it's great in dry or somewhat slightly damp situations. But this will work when things are soaked. It's a step up.
Use both - but this stuff is a must have for when things go REALLY south.
Also - you can leave the stuff in the tin and light the top and it all sort of wicks up and burns for a long long time (like 40 mins or so). That can be a lifesaver in some cases.

I asked before but did not see a response, I am hoping I can get an answer: How will this stuff hold up inside the tin in a desert environment? I live, camp and hunt in West Texas where it can reach 110 in the shade. Will I end up with a solid lump of wax and some cotton rings on top?
@Stegadeth It will hold up just fine, It has been tested up to about 170 degrees Obviously at that temperature the wax will melt some but inside the tin, it really has nowhere to go. Pry apart the disks and it will work as advertised! :D
It will not dry out or expire. I have "disks" that i made months ago, that haven't been stored in tins, which i have used over the course of time... There has been no negative result, it works as good now as it did the first day made

Equip2Endure did a review on these not too long ago and said that you don't need to use an entire disc in order to start a fire, but of course the 5-7 minutes of flame is going to be reduced if you're using a smaller piece.
ive always loved your work and thought u where a badass. but i have a whole new lvl of respect for you when i watch dual survival and u cut ur arm and lit it on fire... jesus ur a boss...
hi dave, I just wnted to thank you for all the things you learn me thrue youtube. youre a very wise man in the bush, so thank you for the education. and keep on youtubing. and by the way, I think your knife the bhk pathfinder knife,is the most beutiful knife ever made. be strong.
I bought a couple tins of this product to try out - it's pretty damn impressive actually. I do the cotton pad/melted vasoline thing too but this is a considerable improvement on that product.
99 percent of the time you don't need a whole pad - just rip off a little corner and you're good to go. So a tin actually lasts a lot longer than you think. And I only use it when it's a little wet and you need something to get the fire going now. Living in the Coastal BC rain forest it's critical.
Honestly - a small chunk or a quarter slice is all you need for even somewhat wet or 'less than ideal' circumstances. You'd only need a whole pad for when things are REALLY bad.
Well I don't know about 'hundreds' (unless you save the remains and use it as char cloth too - it does work like that). But without a doubt you can get several dozen at least. Lets face it - the ferro rod alone is good enough when it's really dry, if it's a little wet but still mostly dry or you're in a hurry, 1/8 of a pad is enough so that would be about 48 fires right there. If it's kinda wet a quarter or a half would do, especially if you do even a little prep.
I'd only actually use a whole pad if i fell in the river or something and I needed fire and heat RIGHT now and didn't have the time to prep for 'optimal fire starting' and wanted to cheat a little.
I'm sold! I live out here on the Olympic Peninsula out here in Washington state and as you know it doesn't take a flood for fuel materials to get and stay wet. That product will become an essential part of my woods kit and my grab and go bag for disaster situations. Thanks for bringing this product to the survival community and thanks to the creator for having the insight and ingenuity to fill a real need for some of us that live in rainforest climates.
I actually made something like that a couple of days ago. Although mine it's nothing more than square cotton pads fully soaked in melted wax. burn roughly around 5minutes as well. Might try to add some gasoline in the melted wax next time.
@Raioh87 be careful, the process i went through to create this product has had some close calls. I wouldnt suggest using Gasoline with any combination of fuels to start a fire.
How will this stuff hold up inside the tin in a desert environment? I live, camp and hunt in West Texas where it can reach 110 in the shade. Will I end up with a solid lump of wax and some cotton rings on top?
Looks great Dave. I'm going to order a can and a ferro rod like yours. I'm very sure if my wood isn't as wet as yours I can cut a pad into smaller pieces and start many more fires. I think I may also be able to come up with a couple more multiple uses, plus I just want your Pathfinder can. I also like the way you help people. Good job.
Awesome product. I have never seen anything that small burn with as big a flame as that for that long. I thought the char cloth would fail, but that worked amazingly well too!
Dave, do you think it lit back up on its own once it was charred, or did it absorb some of the fuel from the other biscuits in the tin.
Its given me the daft idea of adding a drop or two of paraffin or kerosene to my dry tinder kit. Might help it repel water as well, since the fuel is oily.
Dave whats your real FB page?I've seen a lot of them and don't now wich one is the original ;d Great review btw love the sheath and the knife and everything.Keep up the good work brother!
I like this! Gonna get three of them. Now, teach how you tie your dew rag. It has me bamfoozled. And it is part of the common man mandatory dress. Especially for your follicley challenged followers.
@PointyMetalObjects That's what I was thinking too, putting it back into the tin could have caused it to absorb some more accelerant, thus creating flame rather than ember. Still I think it would work admirably well even without the extra accelerant.
Thats a very reliable looking product, but I'd like to see it tested against cotton wool soaked in petroleum jelly. I am a bit confused about how that disk can be used as char cloth after it has finished burning out entirely, i mean if it has burnt out entirely how can there be anything left in it to burn?, looks more like it just hadn't finished burning entirely, not that there's anything wrong with that, two fires from one disk is pretty good
Roger did an awesome job on this product Brother, and thank you for helping out the common man Dave. Thumbs way up! Looks like an awesome multi purpose product.
dave i personally thank you for helping this guy out, i think its asinine to dog someones invention just because theyre new. if anything, foster his desire for bushcraft and teach him, and see what ideas hes coming up with in five years!!! then lets see whos talking shit. to the inventor, welcome to bushcraft, brother. to any who buy this stuff, good investment :)
Cody is the fire dude, you always let him start the fire while your looking for food. Just keep in hidden just incase Cody can't get a fire going. You guys are an inspiration and fun to watch, we bring you guys into our living room and are actually part of the family for 45 minutes. Later, have fun and be safe... . . . _ _ _ . . .
Gotta have one "sure fire" as you say. If one can't find trioxane bars, this might be an equivalent in that it can also boil water. One cheap and easy alternative is shoe polish from a dollar store, the polish melted in the can and cotton balls place inside to soak up the fuel. Shoe polish is much more volatile than petroleum jelly or wax, but do not consider is a "sure fire", but a 'likely fire' that can dry out kindling. One needs dry cotton from inside the can for ignition.
I really like the products you carry in your store they all look like very high quality, However I think your about due for an overhaul on the site itself as it does not reflect the quality level of your products, your training, or your videos. I love the work your doing especially the charity work and such. Would be nice if your sales were to increase to support more of it. Please consider hiring a professional for your site....
If someone were to add a ranger band to the mini inferno it would get wet material burning even faster, i personally carry a few extra ranger bands on all my sheaths for just that purpose.
Quik Question Dave, if everything is soaked from rain or flood, cant you chop off branches from trees that are living and split it to start a fire, wouldnt the inner meat be protected by the bark?
I've been watching you waaay before you were ever on Dual Survival Dave. I greatly enjoy and learn a lot from your videos. I'm glad that you are now able to make videos for PathFinder again. I look forward to every episode of the new season of Dual Survival. Thank you so much for all you do and keep 'em coming :)
It looks kinda like mini pork roll. Good enough to eat, but too bad it's inedible. It will cook real pork roll for me though. Time for my midnight snack. Thanks for the vid Dave.

@wildernessoutfitters Hey Dave,Wouldn't A Small Piece Do If You Were in A Drier Condition. Great Review Of The Product Brother,Thanks
tylerdurden1971 9 months ago
@tylerdurden1971
Honestly - a small chunk or a quarter slice is all you need for even somewhat wet or 'less than ideal' circumstances. You'd only need a whole pad for when things are REALLY bad.
Foxer604 9 months ago
@Foxer604 Thats What I Was Thinking, You Could Get A Hundred Fires outta That One Tin
tylerdurden1971 9 months ago
@tylerdurden1971
Foxer604 9 months ago 2
@tylerdurden1971
I'd only actually use a whole pad if i fell in the river or something and I needed fire and heat RIGHT now and didn't have the time to prep for 'optimal fire starting' and wanted to cheat a little.

Fort a cheaper alternative - cotton pads (like the ones women use to remove make up) soaked in Vaseline.

Raioh87 9 months ago
@Raioh87 be careful, the process i went through to create this product has had some close calls. I wouldnt suggest using Gasoline with any combination of fuels to start a fire.

@Back2DaBasix Thx for the heads up mate.

I thought the char cloth would fail, but that worked amazingly well too!
jaseth1337 9 months ago 2
Dave, do you think it lit back up on its own once it was charred, or did it absorb some of the fuel from the other biscuits in the tin.
Its given me the daft idea of adding a drop or two of paraffin or kerosene to my dry tinder kit. Might help it repel water as well, since the fuel is oily.
fridgebulb 9 months ago
Great product. I think I'd be cutting the disc in thirds or quarters. With the flame those little suckers put out, it should be no problem.

Wouldn't putting the burnt out piece back in the tin make it absorb fuel from the fresh disks making it much more flammable than char-cloth?
PointyMetalObjects 9 months ago
@PointyMetalObjects That's what I was thinking too, putting it back into the tin could have caused it to absorb some more accelerant, thus creating flame rather than ember. Still I think it would work admirably well even without the extra accelerant.
lexacor 9 months ago
Thats a very reliable looking product, but I'd like to see it tested against cotton wool soaked in petroleum jelly. I am a bit confused about how that disk can be used as char cloth after it has finished burning out entirely, i mean if it has burnt out entirely how can there be anything left in it to burn?, looks more like it just hadn't finished burning entirely, not that there's anything wrong with that, two fires from one disk is pretty good

Cody is the fire dude, you always let him start the fire while your looking for food. Just keep in hidden just incase Cody can't get a fire going. You guys are an inspiration and fun to watch, we bring you guys into our living room and are actually part of the family for 45 minutes. Later, have fun and be safe... . . . _ _ _ . . .

FJvoodoo 9 months ago 2
