STANWYCK - In a class ALL HER OWN! Moved like a panther; gave it her all; and gave the credit to others. How unfortunate that we will probably never see the likes of her again!
Pre-code. Nothing later counts for anything, in the universal scheme of things. She was great, as long as her greatness was allowed; i.e., until 1934.
And the best all around Hollywood actress of all time goes to....Ms Barbara Stanwyck--yes better than Davis, Hepburn and Leigh. Ms. Stanwyck ALWAYS had authenticity, vulnerability and wry humor to her performances. Every one of them is believable, watchable and full of life. As some one very well said above, she never gave a bad performance. Thank you Barbara.
She was about 75 years old when this aired, and she looks amazing! Just watched her in Baby face (which took place when she was about 25-26) and she was soo beautiful. Looking at this it makes me happy that she aged so wonderfully. Rest in peace.
Yes, wonderful movies all, and wonderful career. Great lady. And that VOICE!!! I also wonder what year this was? Anyway, in spite of all of the great, wonderful movies for which she deserved an Oscar, and, Stella Dallas really MOVED me, I remember her best of all for her Emmy-winning "command performance," her last major performance at age 75 as Mary Carson in "The Thorn Birds." So POWERFUL!!! What a way to cap a brilliant career playing the most memorable villainous in modern literature--WOW!!!
She should have had an Oscar for Ladies of Leisure and possibly for almost every movie after, but especially for Ladies of Leisure. If that's not great acting nothing is!
@ilovebones18 Your quote is backwards. As you've written it, it makes no sense. It should be "I need him like the turkey needs the ax", the implication being that, she did not need him at all; in fact, it would have been detrimental to have done so. See how that works? There you go.
What class, what graciousness, what absolute kings and queens those people were. I do not wish to trash the current-day movie stars, but they are NOTHING in comparison to those actors of the golden age of Hollywood.
The single greatest film actress I have ever seen.
Sorry to the foreign film actresses I don't know but should. And sorry to Ms. Streep, who I think and have for a long time is our greatest living American film actress.
And sorry to Carole Lombard (Jane Alice Peters) and Susan Hayward, my father's favorite (Edyth Marriner), but Ruby Catherine Stevens takes the cake,
What other actress, after 55 years in movies, could have rubbed down a naked Richard Chamberland. And you still watched?
What a woman. I wish leading actors still were so erudite and charming -- and had such New York accents. She sounds exactly the same as she did in 'Ball of Fire.'
I will say it again. I am moved by the humility of these true stars. They were bigger than life and yet, they allowed themselves to show their emotions in public, moved to tears: both men and women. In seeing the clips (Oscar acceptance) of others stars from the Golden Era of Hollywood, these is a common denominator amongst them. Their true talent shall live forever in the characters they so brilliantly portrayed.
one of my favorite Stanwyck films is "Christmas in Connecticut". It was a simple movie and piece of war time fluff. That said - she made it work . That is true talent.
my favorite movie is the lady gambles, she totally embody the personality of a gambler, the need that blinks in their eyes to gamble, not to win back but to just gamble... she made it real...
As I get older I appreciate the great stars of the golden era....Jean Arthur, Claudette Colbert, James Cagney, Paul Muni, Susan Hayward, Irene Dunne, but none more deserving of accolades than Barbara Stanwyck...a great actress, a great box office star, a grand lady.
Ms. Stanwyck was great in The Lady Eve,
Stella Dallas and Double Indemnity. In fact Barbara Stanwyck never ever gave a bad performance. Her directors: Capra,
I recall reading that she made a point of learning the names of every crew member on her films and never was the "star", but part of the whole team. The result was that everyone did their best to make her look her best. Small surprise she had the grace to acknowledge all the behind the camera folks who made her look good.
How could Oscar have ignored one of the handful of truly great screen actresses? She was far greater than most of the ladies who received theirs. Oh, well! I've always though an honorary award was a consolation prize.
Peter, I don't recall that she named names. She was conservative, granted, in large measure because she was married to Robert Taylor during that time zone. But I don't recall her appearing in front of the HUAC.
No it wasnt because her award nominations came well before the time of naming or not naming names...if it were ever to have been an issue it would have been at the time of the honorary Oscar....how Hollywood felt about her may be measured by the fact that she did in fact receive the Honorary Oscar and no one in the house seems to be sitting on their hands
How could anyone say such ugly things about a wonderful human being who did and still gives great entertainment. She did that for a living, and was damn good. I cannot believe the comments below. You may answer for that someday. I suggest you search your heart and thing about what you are doing. We gave enought bad things going on in this world and a movie lets us forget and have fun.
I just got done watching a video of Babyface with my wife, who works in the accounting dept of a large bank. I originally saw it at 4 a.m. on tcm while watching a John Wayne marathon. At first I wasn't going to watch but had to see the duke ('s cameo). My eyes were wide open and draw dropped through it and had to share it with my wife. Watch it!
As I've had to remind you too many other times, you have far too much to learn.
Who cares about her "horrid chain smokers voice?"
You're comments on everything are too bloody stupid to do more than react. I'm done reacting. Especially since you have no bloody clue about the greatest screen actress you have ever seen.
I don't think she was particularly political at all. She may not have waived a fist in protest, but simply being at particular pool parties doesn't form a fixed and intractable ideology.
@PeterFirthFan yes, she was a Republican--but she also respected the rights of others and was against destroying lives. So you are wrong there==get your facts right about this great lady and artist.
i think she is a good actress, but i think that she wasn't the best. bette davis, joan crawford and janet leigh among others where better actresses, and they all looked just as good 'till the end.
I agree that perhaps Davis was a better actress, but I think most wouldn't consider Crawford in their league at all. She was a 'movie star' yes, but not an actress with a wide range.
And Janet Leigh -- she'd have been long forgotten if it weren't for 'Psycho', and even in that case, the film isn't remembered for her performance.
I agree. Joan was a movie star, and she worked damm hard to be a star, She had some great films in the 1940's, all credit to her. But for pure talent bette davis, ingid bergman and to a slightly lesser degree kate hepburn, were the real deal.
I think Barbara Stanwyck and Bette Davis were the two best. Barbara was more subtle than Davis at times, whihc I like.
Joan Crawford (though I much prefer the other two) was a tremendous actress. A Woman's Face, Mildred Pierce...heck, even Johnny Guitar show her talent.
Barbara Stanwyck is one star whose reputation keeps growing and growing and amen to that. "Double Indemnity"
and one of the great films of all times,
"Stella Dallas" among others. I am so glad the Academy awarded Stanwyck an Honorary Oscar...great actress, great lady, and she is missed. Qualities that Stanwyck, Hayward, Loy, Dunne, Arthur,
Colbert had rarely exist in a town called Hollywood today.
it's sad that great movie actors/actresses are just reduced in receiving honorary oscars instead of giving them best actor/actress oscars. it's like saying "we owe you one for lasting this long in the business, so here's your honorary oscar." sad.
I don't give a rat's ass about Stanwyck's personal life. It's none of my business. She is one of my all-time favorite actors, and her films are among my favorites.
As mca1218 so aptly put it:"A dame and a lady in the same glorious package!"
I'm gay and am sickened by the character assassination that fellow gay people seem hellbent on pursuing against people who are either straight, homophobic, or who simply do not share their need to be 'out'.
And wherever there is an anonymous forum like this, it runs rampant.
You should be ashamed of yourselves - but you'll never be, will you?
Henrycorbetson- ObamaRules4Ever-HarveyCartwright-JohnRogersly....is a well known troll on the web. Search the web and laugh reading his ridiculous comments.

it's sad that great movie actors/actresses are just reduced in receiving honorary oscars instead of giving them best actor/actress oscars. it's like saying "we owe you one for lasting this long in the business, so here's your honorary oscar." sad.

She was simply magnificent.

Boy, did she age gracefully. She is my favorite actress.

Not really. She already had emphysema, chronic obstructive lung disease and heart disease.

That's what killed my mother, and she, too, was an actress and looked stunning until the end.

I don't give a rat's ass about Stanwyck's personal life. It's none of my business. She is one of my all-time favorite actors, and her films are among my favorites.
As mca1218 so aptly put it:"A dame and a lady in the same glorious package!"
RIP Missy. You were one of a kind.

why can't oscar acceptance speeches be like this instead of all that sniveling and hyperventilating that goes on today? Learn to speak people!

I totally agree with you. It's acting on top of acting!!! ugh.
