@LiamCrowley1990 Don't like this film that much ; it's miscast in my view, with a really annoying family and some non menacing villains. The Cohen Brothers would have blown this material away if they had made it. The only good bits are the guys at the start

@TheKenfig The Coen Brothers would've made a completely different film, you're right, but it would've had a completely different feel about it. This works perfectly as a Cronenberg film. The Coen Brothers would've made this a black comedy and more plot-driven which would be amazing but I really like this film the way it is.

@LiamCrowley1990 I'm glad you do ; I bought it on dvd before seeing it, enjoying it on first viewing, but for me some of the acting is quite poor ; from Mortenson, who in spite of his long standing attempt to have eradicated his mob image and replace it with 'family man' (so I'm taking his being out of practice into consideration), does not seem to exude anything of a complex former gangster any more than a man in a white hat and coat on the bacon counter at a supermarket. Bello is worse.

@TheKenfig Yeah, I agree the acting could be better, Bello's character wasn't great. I think the story and the way the scenes are constructed are great though. Shame you don't like it, what did you think of Eastern Promises?

@LiamCrowley1990 As I say, I like ASPECTS of it. The bad guys at the start are brilliant. However, the normally great Ed Harris is more like a cartoon villain worthy of the Joel Schumacher Batman films e.g. Harvey Two-Face etc. The William Hurt thing at the end is better, only the script for that isn't that good either as it is a glib and superficial explanation of why killing his brother after all this time is so essential ; it seems contrived. Don't know that film, sorry

The opening 4 minute pan of a drab motel set a pace that lets the viewer have time to absorb and react to what is happening on screen. This movie draws the viewer right into it. One question: What happened to the bodies of Fogarty and his thugs and what about the car?

The standard of music has been put too low, by now. Old music is way better. Only a few good people left. Movies today are good tho =)
