About checkpoints.I am one of many happy to provide any documents relating to my use of the roads as I have done while in Europe.I am also happy that those who are not paying their fair share, have warrants,no insurance, faulty equipment, here illegally,DUI etc.are removed from the road.I wish my trip to be safe as possible, and for those who are cheating to be off the roads. It's a huge stretch to think this will lead to a draconian state.Take the bus if you cannot follow the easy terms of use.
BTW, only people who don't have DL or insurance are the ones complaining about these stops. Driving is not a "right". Most countries (E.U. in particular), have manditory annual "vehicle inspections". If you have ANY body damage, bad tires or your car doesn't pass emissions, your car is impounded with HUGE fines.
I would venture to say that at least 15% of people driving cars in CA are unlicensed and 40% have NO insurance... Of course if you drive in large metro areas like LA, Sac , San Diego and the Bay Area, you can change the numbers to 25% & 60% respectively... Isn't living in what is now "California" great ???
These are "papers" checkpoints under the ruse of safety checkpoints. They catch way more papers and vehicle violations at these checkpoints then they do DUI checkpoints, which is way they do them. So they can collect revenue on the violations and tows.
I hold firm the the constitution and believe that these check points are illegal and need to go...as for you Mr.Roberts, I find your work bland and rather boring.
@TVman1981 Oh, don't get me wrong just because your work is bland and rather boring things are not all well....the NAZI check points are still checking papers in the USA.
@1rooen i rather have a checkpoint than be hit by a drunk driver with no insurance and have to pay thousands of dollars in hospital fees and mechanic fees... just sayin
DUI check point, no i dont think so, the cops are making you show your "papers" to catch you that being no licence, no registration ect. they are getting used to invading your privacy and rights so that then we dont have any rights, well i guess the point is stand up for your right or else they WILL be taken away from you!!!
So what happens if the cop or schreiff stopped you for a non traffic violation and have no identification on you? (i.e crossing the street against a red signal, having open liquor etc....)
pfft they put out warrants for not showing up for traffic tickets. In the province of BC Canada where I live they just put a judgement against you and don't let you renew insurance or licence
@SuperJerkyBoys You are correct in some counties around the Bay Unlicensed driver are permitted to allow someone with a licence to come and pick up the car.. You can blame that on politicians changing the laws allowing that however in Marin County if you have no licence you're car could get towed.
@TVman1981 Since you're such a smart ass. Will you get towed driving without a license in San Jose Ca, I heard they only give you a ticket. Verify this now please thank you.
No license for 11 years? Wow...I never had a license and I am 34 yo, but I never drove without a license and rely solely on public transit. I guess they were obeying the traffic laws that whole and never got caught when they broke them...until now.
We need MORE stops!! Not just during the holidays and not just towing their car and letting them walk. These illegals are EVERYWHERE. I'm a yet another victim of Hit and Run by an illegal.
No license, no registration . . . what's going on here? Also, this is the second time in this series that I've seen a Mexican consulate ID being used as a DL. Why doesn't the Mexican Consulate apprise its members that they need to have a valid DL to drive in CA? Duh!
Illegal aliens can't get drivers licenses because California DMV requires a valid Social Security number. Every unlicensed drivers in this piece is, very likely, an illegal alien.
so what does a DUI check point gotta do with "where Your drivers license???" oh yeah let me hear the cracker out cry cuz that's all ur good at, BITCHIN!!
It's amazing at how many people don't have a license -- nor have they ever had one. One person I know is driving with just an ID card. I don't ride with them, at least not as a passenger. :-)
What's amazing is how much BS a law abiding person has to go through to keep a current license and car on the road with registration and insurance, and yet somehow these illegals have no license but they have tags. How?
It is unconstitutional for the police to search someone when he or she is not doing anything wrong. I'm sorry, but unless we want to live in a country where police can, one day, do whatever the hell they want, we cannot allow them to do this.
But that "if you are doing nothing wrong, you have nothing to worry about" argument doesn't work because it very easily gets out of hand. Where does it stop?
@bg1379 Right, but driving is a privilege and not a right. The courts have ruled that DUI checkpoints are legal. If you don't wish to enter one, drive only on private roads. Public roads can and should be regulated.
@bg1379 Also, it is in the best interest of California residents to ensure that all drivers are licensed and carry the minimum amount of liability insurance. When people are taking control of 4,000 pound machines, you want to be sure that the rules are enforced.
@Gulfporter If your traveling through New Mexico at their check point, you better have driver license because they ask for drivers license not only to make shure the license driver but to make shure the citizen otherwise you car could be impounded or worse be sent to Mexico.
