rei ayanami is the single best charactor in anime in my opinion, no other evokes so many emotions in me, happines sadness pride, lonlyness, love, respect... im a better person 4 watching eva and rei!!

Child Rei is strangled to death by Naoko Akagi Rei II (the one we see in episodes 1-23) is definitely the one who had the most human development - she loved Gendo, and she was falling in love with his son, she started forming a friendship-like relationship with others (namely Touji), and was on her way to becoming emotionally functional when she sacrificed herself to save Shinji by blowing up Unit 00.
I was under the impression that she contained Yui's soul in Yui's cloned body. Hence her love for Gendo, and her 'motherly' demeanor. How she surpasses human form as Rei III to be an angel/human hybrid and merges with Lilith is unknown to me, but one thing for sure is that 3rd impact occoured because she absorbed Adam, which was contained in Gendo's hand, and delivered it into the body of Lilith.
Where are you getting that Kaworu had Adam's soul?
Yui's soul is in Unit 01. So unless they could get it out, I don't think it can be in Rei.
Kaworu, using sense, you got a guess he was Adam. All angels come from adam, or are adam. He had similar attributes like Rei. He also said that they were 'the same'.
Yui's soul is in 01, but, if you read the manga there is a scene where Rei is basically conversing with 01, after Shinji was absorbed into the entry plug, and they acknowledge being the same person.
Since the soul was 'painstakingly salvaged' and digitized, I'm not sure if multiple copies could exist. But I'm equally unsure of how (Nerv, gehirn) would obtain Lilith's soul? Perhaps they used part of her body in the cloning process, but I'm not sure of the soul.
@dudlemann The Manga isn't the same continuity s the anime and even sadomoto himself confirms this. He calls the manga 'his interpretation'. And Rei could as well have been talking to Unit 01 itself since it was cloned from Lillith. Rei is pretty much a person of her own (or well, three people, actually. As she herself said it in ep. 25, they are only all 'Ayanami Rei' because others call them that.
@pianist231 Of course, she has a connection to Yui/ was partially created from her remains, but that doesn't mean she IS Yui. There's also her angelic genes, and she also has some of Gendo's personality traits as he raised her.
But she is mostly a person of her own with her own thoughts. I mean, real life ppl also resemble their parents, but that doesn't mean they ARE their parents.

@pianist231 He probably just subconciously recalled his mom squeezing a towel, and since her and Rei look alike, this triggered that association within Shinji.
When he tells her that she lookes motherly and would make a great housewife, she blushes and gets VISIBLY embarassed, probably mistaking it for some sort of romantic compliment. It was just Shinji's memory playing a trick on him.

She's just a husk, to contain Lillith's soul. A bit like Kaworu. He was a husk with Adam's soul.

I felt that it was a sort of reqrium for Rei. But it was a great vid. I esspecially loved the end where the lyerics fade just as she smiles.
