it's amazing actually, people seem to think the demo i am a robot does is the best one on youtube, but this is a constantly shifting musical composition not just techno loops. not that techno loops are bad or anything...
sort of sad that a dude just clicking on a glorified computer can be mentioned in the same sentence of mozart. anyway, that thing is dope....if only i had that kinda money to blow.

I'm afraid dilettantes can... I use one as an electronic musican, and yet my friend who has no musical experience can pick it up and immeaditily create fantastic sounding scapes.
It's all diatonic, so techincally impossible to go 'wrong'.
Saying 'it's all diatonic, so technically impossible to go wrong', is like saying 'if you've got paint in primary colours, you're bound to make an artwork'. Jim's got some of the best ears around, trust me :)
I'm sure he's an amazing musician: Yamaha wouldn't be approaching him if he wasn't.
Remember Yamaha are also aiming this product at non-musicians: music therapy for special needs children etc. Point is, you don't have to be talented to get decent pieces coming out of this piece of gear, but that's not to say that the ones with musical prowess won't take it further.
I've not read on any electronic music shop site that Yamaha are aiming this at non-musicians/special needs kids, - however that would make perfect sense!
However this gadget should be priced at £99, not the ridiculous amount it retails at!
Yes, this is awesome music. As the other commenter said: Steve Reich watch out. This guy is doing in a few minutes what it took him months/years to do with music for 18 musicians.
But really, I only logged in so I could correct you: it's not diatonic, it's pentatonic :-)
Although apparently the tenori-on can do other scales & modes.
@LfunkeyA Maybe the notes will not sound "bad", but the music done could be imaginative, great stuff, or just boring. Today is easy to work "in scale", I can give you whatever cool tool, but a great musician will make a best thing with that.
Even if a musician's got 'better ears' this approach to improvisation, where you can't possibly get a 'wrong' note, makes it much easier for everyone. Also, the sounds in this device happen to sound good from the get go, no amazing equalizing skills are required. Now you can tell me that Jim O'Rourke is great, and he is, but what's demoed in this video is not something unachievable for the person with an average interest in music.
@LfunkeyA I Know, im not even a Jim´s fan. But my point is that we live in times with a lot of cool tools, that makes making music easier (I make electronic music!) but creativity remains as the most important thing, as always.
PS. I hope that these tools will bring out the musicality in more people, because we're all musical deep inside, maybe something more user friendly will keep many interested in music easier.
maybe i'm off, but you seem disappointed that its leveled the playing field. music isn't a weight lifting contest. its more of a weight releasing contest. therapy as you said.
don't you think your friend deserves to feel the satisfaction of making something of musical merit?
I think saying stuff is important.

i just heard four tet playing his tenori-on, sounded totally different from this, what Jimmy boy here is doing is a tad more sofistokated.

i mean, if you have no knowledge of music/composition chances are you probably wont make anything that sounds all that great

that's not a very good comparison. while the diatonic argument is rather true.

@Hyperufus false analogy - you can't go wrong in either case because there is no 'wrong'
10ccalanarkush 9 months ago
@Hyperufus you are as likely to make an artwork in either case - this is a false analogy.
