If I recall correctly the lower side armor of the M114 is only 3/4" think aluminum at 0degree slope. Both the M2 AP and M14 API 30-06 rds can penetrate up to 7/8" of homogenous steel armor at 100 yds. Both these rds are available on the civilian market.
Upper side armor is only 1.25" thick aluminum at 0 degrees. Easily penetrated probably by even .50 ball let alone AP.
These were built as "armored jeeps", nothing more.
I can't argue with that, brother! That they are! I had plans on purchasing one back in the 80's and restoring it but that dream unfortunately never materialized.
Glad you've got two to play with. When Atlanta explodes and burns for the second time you guys will be ready to deal with that which boils over into your neighborhood.
Most of what I've been told seems to be centered around low power and poor cross country mobility...dont recall anything said about being a death trap. But then again, anything short of an Abrams is a death trap. Looking at the other track vids from jameskello kinda proves we've worked out the "low power" thing ;)
WG, just Google the words M114 and Death Trap and you'll see how many hits you get describing the vehicle with those words.
I suppose going up against gang bangers they'd be better performers unless one of them had a .50 cal rifle with A.P. ammo. Then the words "Death Trap" could probably be brought back into play.
Seriously, if .50 cal is a potential threat you might want to consider uparmoring at least the driver's compartment with some stand off laminate aluminum.
To see this little machine's bigger brother, check out "Atlanta Cops Rolls Out SWAT APC" on this site. Those guys really know how to tell a scary story :)
Looking for an M114 video and ... tank drifting? This was designed as as smaller recon buddy to the immortal M113. It flunked badly in Vietnam because the M113 was more mobile and carried more people to boot. One in Ft Lewis with an RPG hole in the side. . Good to see this one put to good use. I'm gonna re-upload this on my channel if you don't mind.
This was an answer to what question? I talked with a guy over the w/e that was in Nam in 1967, and recalls the M114A2 were used by the US Army then. He has one now, so I doubt he was mistaken on what he saw and operated. He also worked with them again in Germany. It's true there were mechanical difficulties with this equipment, but with that said, is it the machine or it's designer who is to be blamed for that? I'll bet you are the type to raise hell at the hammer for hitting your thumb too.
The Army used them in Vietnam initially but they were such rolling death traps that they sent them all out of 'Nam and to units in Europe and elsewhere.
What is a cornhole anyway? I like this video. Just one question though. Is the driver and the camera guy grown adult males? If so, is this is second childhood?
Well, looks like we got busted James. This happens every time! You just need to stop doing good work, and that way I wont have to notice it. And I will try to stop being a wannabe (this will be difficult for me though) but I will try.
I have been inside of this place before they used to have some good shit!

The US Army never used these in Viet Nam. They gave them to the Vietnamese army but they gave them back! I was on the M114 at Fort Lewis in 71-72.
