@MyNameIsBucket That's a fascinating thought.Would it have a place today? (Did it have a place THEN,31 years ago?!) Who on Earth could capture the magic and revive sincere & credible straight-weirdness? (I could already imagine Robbie Williams clowning around at it.and sapping all the energy out it,totaly devalualing it). In all honesty, some cult classics are probably best left untouched..
@ucfbtm I was only thinking of the composition and song structure that's regained popularity. The instrumentation would change dramatically (i.e. guitars in front), of course, but I could see a modern band playing it.
@MyNameIsBucket I suspect it would need to be a British band,to even 'know" it,let alone remember it - although the latter is not a requirement for a Cover,of course :) I didn't think Talk Talk could EVER be replicated, but my utter shock at hearing the opening strains to "It's my life",turned to pleasant surprise when No Doubt's cover was actually a highly respectful tribute. But that's their rare skill to maintain musical integrity
ucfbtm, saw your comment on nearlyoutofideas' posting of the vid. Bloody hell, the search is over! At long last IT HAS ARRIVED!! What a star he is for posting it! Absolutely fanbloodytastic! Me minces couldn't believe it.
Cheers mate. This came out when I was 15 and I fell in love with it.There really wasn't anything else quite like it,even though the quirky start to the 80s hadn't yet defined what the 80s would be :)
Yea, I actually first heard this on the DAB station planet rock. Rick was playing it on his own show! It had quite an interesting story as to how it came to be written and made, and why he's using a french singer. Unfortunately, I can't remember it D-:
Well that certainly sounds like a great anecdote that you're half-telling.You old tease, you :) I would have loved to hear that - not sure if I understand about the french singer bit. It's great to hear that we've got Rick thinking AND TALKING about this again - so that he'll eventually get round to posting the video;if he finds it. Cheers for the update, mate.
I remember the video for this song when it was first released. Unfortunately only two parts of the video remain in my memory: 1. Rick on an overground train dressed in suit and bowler hat with brolly looking every inch a City of London businessman surrounded by punks and New Romantics staring at him; 2. At the end for the instrumental him leaping between two keyboards in his usual garb with his trademark long blonde hair and playing the outro. Would love to see the video again.
I never did get to see the vid - and I'm still hoping that Rick will dig up his copy and find a way to post it. Thanks very much for sharing your memories,Vox.Cheers for that
This is the excerpt from the email reply I got from him last year - when I queried his non-existence in the Guinness book.(HisCaps, not mine) HI GARRY,
TO THE VERY BEST OF MY RECOLLECTION IT REACHED 27 AND THEN DISAPPEARED. ITHAD QUITE A LOT OF RADIO PLAY AND A VIDEO WAS DONE AS WELL ALTHOUGH HEAVENONLY KNOWS WHERE THAT HAS ENDED UP ! I HAVE A PRETTY POOR COPY THAT'SALL.....
Do you think Boy George was in this original mix from 1980? Rick remixed it slightly for a 1983 release, which is also not classified as having ever charted.
I'm not sure that i ever remember seeing a video, tho clearly there was one.Rick had emailed me - when I asked if he could rectify his Guinness classification - and he said he does have "a poor copy" of it.We'll have to hope he can get it posted!
Someone should totally cover this song today.

Regrettably, it appears unlikely Rick will post the video if this quote from Virgin Radio's UK site is anything to go by:
"For "I'm So Straight I'm A Weirdo" (also released as a single) there was even produced a video, which has now been lost."

Ah! There is hope! We must get a technical crew round his house to clean up his copy. Many thanks for this encouraging revelation.

Sorry to reply to this 9 months later, but somebody HAS posted the video to this song!

Just finding a good recording of the music - be that the single or "Rock N' Roll Prophet" is hard enough, sigh...
I love this. I must be of that certain age LOL!

Memories of weirder times! As long as we duffers can still remember :) That's what counts
ucfbtm 3 years ago
Even Rick doesn't have the video anymore, as one of his sons lost his last copy.

The real video had Boy George as an extra. I'm dying to see it.
This was a one-off single at first, but later appeared on a LP on a small label.
That is actually Rick singing! After that, he doesn't even do harmonies, and sticks to what he knows best!

He's only in the video.
johnsposato 4 years ago
yes,I mean the video.There was this 1980 release and a 1983 remix - thus 2 videos.(I'll assume Boy George was in the 1983 vid,not the 1980 original)
ucfbtm 4 years ago
Actually, he was in the original, before Culture Club. It says on Rick Wakeman's site.

sure why this reminds me of Klaus Nomi.

A poor copy is better than none. I see distorted clips here all the time. If he had a copy, he could have had it restored for his new DVD box set.
