Padded elastic bands around the ankles, or laces. One could argue those booties are the most critical piece of equipment in the race. Without them your dogs' feet get torn up, the vet at the next checkpoint DQs you, and you're out of the race.

At first my family dog didnt like them then we were in Fairbanks and it was -50F. Now she is used to them. NOTE she is by no means a mushing dog. The ones we purchased from REI have Velcro straps to keep on.
