As a Chinese person, watching Chinese actors play Chinese characters speaking broken English is really awkward and embarrassing. Just subtitle it. Many parts of the film are viscerally beautiful, like art, but it truly feels like a foreign view on the Last Emperor. It's an uncomfortable contrast, but I can appreciate it. However, it doesn't feel true to nature.
@trippletrain77 You're dumb. The Chinese government helped with the production of the film. It won numerous oscars including Best Film in 1987, and is a very fair portrayal of Puyi and his life. It doesn't make the Chinese look bad, so why would they "beat the crap out of you".

China did not become communist until the communists won the Chinese Civil War in 1949. Furthermore, you don't know shit. This movie was produced with the help of the Chinese government, which also approved the script and filming at the Forbidden City. It doesn't show Chinese in a bad light. In fact, it was the Japanese who censored this film.

@askjiir For fucks sake? Puyi's story was brought to the west mostly by this film alone. Puyi had already written an autobiography in China, but the fact remains that a film about it wasn't going to be released there for an incredibly long time due to the CCP.

The very fact that subtitled movies are never ever as popular as dubbed or native language movies pretty much proves my point for me anyway.

I'll give you an example, the last subtitled move I watched was troll hunter, and I enjoyed the move, I even liked the actors voice in the movie... BUT... because I have to look at the bottom of the screen to read, it diverts my attention to what is actually going on in the movie, this is especially true in the action scenes...

I suppose it depends if you appreciate the other language too, in some movies the foriegn language seems to compliment the movie well, like in WW2 movies!

I agree with you 110%, just don't expect it to happen. Films are about being commercially viable, sadly. Hence all the bullshit films win oscars.
