Saw, Neal Sedaka last night at Hot August Nights in Reno Nevada. He was Great sang this song everyone stood up and applauded after he sang Solitair. Still singing after 50 years. Still has the voice.
@osodrac3012 Robin Williams steps onto the scene only recently whereas Neil Sedaka is already there decades ago. So who looks like who should be placed in order.
I had no idea until recently just how many great songs Neil composed often to be made famous by other performers - this is one. The man is genius. Denis
While it is always interesting to hear songwriters sing their own songs, sometimes other performers improve on them. Sedaka's version is nice, but lacks the oomph that Andy Williams brings to the song.
I think this is absolutely fantastic! Definitely one of the greatest live singing and piano playing performances I've ever heard! I only really liked a few of Neil Sedaka's songs before, but I heard this on BBC4 in the early hours of this morning and I just had to stop and listen to it before going to bed. Simply superb, and many thanks for uploading this true gem of a song!
Neil Sedaka documentary, That's When The Music Takes Me, on 15th January 2010 on BBC 4 (digital tv) at 9pm, followed by music special from 1982 from which this song and performance came. (I was in the audience...)
Neil was never too happy with Andy Williams' version, where he changes the lyrics: "and keeping to himself, begins to deal, but still the king of hearts is well concealed" becomes "and keeping to himself he plays the game, without her love it always ends the same". Never tinker with a maestros masterpiece!
i have heard versions of this song with completely different lyrics in does anyone know why this is and if this is the original who wrote the one with the other lyrics in for example Andy Williams sang the other version?
Neil is one of the best. Saw hime once in concert a few years ago here in Dallas and what a showman. Totally deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
that would cause the rock and roll hall of fame building to spontaneously burst into flames and the ground to open up...not that neil sedaka is not talented and sincere, he's just not very rock and roll
it's musicians from the Rock & roll era - note that The Jackson 5, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Dusty Springfield, Etta James, and Aretha Franklin probably don't meet your confines of what is rock and roll, yet they are all hall of famers.
no it's not just musicians from the rock & roll era...there needs to be some energetic drum, electric bass, electric keyboards and/or electric guitar. neil sedaka is not rock & roll i don't care if the songs bring tears streaming down your face or make you dance the jitterbug. neil sedaka is not rock & roll...period
to ajdicks: U are 1 strange fellow. Sedaka's many R 'n R hits include: Oh, Carol. Calendar Girl. Stairway Heaven. Run, Samson, Run. Little Devil. Happy Birthday, Sweet 16. Breaking up is Hard to Do. Sedaka was a Brill Building song writer member along with the duos of Leiber & Stoller, Pomus & Shuman, Goffin & King, Bacharach & David, And, there were plenty of ele. bass, ele. keyboards, ele guitars & driving drums in their songs. Sedaka is a writer, pianist and singer. Do your homework.....
my second wife wrote me one day after the divorce, and told me the reason she didn't want to go on was because of my indifference, that I lost her love because of it, so I really relate to this song...thanks for posting it..
Dear Youtubers and Tuberettes..I agree that Neil and Karen do a wonderfull job on this song but if you want too shed tears then please listen too Jane Olivers delivery of Solitaire...very powerfull!Jane delivers this song the same way Judy Collins delivers the song"Secret Gardens".My two daughters cry every time I play it!Same-Same Judy Collins "In My Life". Best Regards to You All!
I know this man --- the subject of the song! My love died within his silence. Tonight I heard from him. He's switched to poker, much suited to his unemotional personna.
I agree with all the sentiments, but the most incredible contribution is to write a song of this quality in the first place. That being said, Karen Carpenter is the greatest female vocalist of all time---as far as I am concerned. Music!!
sedaka is the composer. and when he composed this he had an understanding of the song than anyone else. how could anyone be possibly on a higher league than him?
Neil is good, he's from my era, but even he acknowledes that Clay made that song his own, with Neil's blessings! No one has ever sang that song with the passion and emotion that Clay puts into it, he is the best!
Considering that Niel Sedaka said on National TV that he had forever lost the song to Clay after hearing him sing it, I'd say your assessment is slightly off.
Love this guy....the best writer and producer...When Clay sings this song, the sadness of the words brings tears all the time. This version is perfect, bravo, Neil.

Jimmy Reed, never had top 30 pop hit= hall of fame
Carl Perkins, country singer of blue suede shoes.
Bo didley, r&b, not rock, Laverne Baker, same.
Lennon and McCartney were not inducted until 94&99 respectively.
Hall of fame is a cruel joke to deserving artist not already inducted.
