He paid them off to avoid the stress & turmoil that a court case would have created. He was too soft and vulnerable to be able to handle it. Unfortunately, that paved the way for other money-seeking parties to try the same means. People thought they could take advantage of him, so in 2005 he had to prove his innocence, or the greedy lawsuits would have continued.

He didn't pay a dime to get off ... he went through a JURY trial, who spent weeks & weeks reviewing evidence (or lack of, rather) and listening to testimonies. The jury declared him innocent after they realized he was being framed, and they truly felt he didn't do it. Read the book "Michael Jackson Conspiracy", written by a reporter who was in the courtroom, who had a change of mind.
