@reiki2guy LOL are you always so angry? What difference does it make to you how other people exercise or play with their dogs? ... and BTW, name-calling does nothing to advance your position - just makes you look childish.
That is pretty cool! I heard about treibball, but I had no idea what it was really about. I am looking more into it. Maybe I will try it with my Golden Retriever River.
What fun! Wish I could do this with my aussies, but they pop every large ball that I've found, except for basketballs, but these can be a big hard on their noses. Thanks for sharing it!
@azmauigirl You can teach not to pop the balls. I used the inflatable beach balls because they are cheap - about $1 each. First I clicker train a "push" on my hand and then an object. Then I inflate the beach ball only part way. I hold it under my arm and compress it so it is more or less ball shaped. And I clicker train a push on that. For a foot touch or attempt to bite remove the ball to the top of the table and ignore for 15 seconds. Gradually move to the ground. And no more ball play
@azmauigirl lol i know how u feel every bouncy ball ive bought for my aussies sooner or later gets popped. Wish i could get one of these balls for mine wonder if they are tougher...
I would suspect that a burst-resistant exercise ball would do the trick. That appears to be what they're using here anyway. That is, as long as they aren't actively biting. I believe that part of this sport involves a strict technique of "nosing." If the dogs are doing it right, I'd say it would be impossible to pop them.
Not everyone is fortunate enough to live in the country and have access to sheep. There are not enough jobs per the amount of working dogs that exist. I see an excited dog here, not a neurotic one. Would you rather this dog be locked in a basement or garage? At least people are trying to find new, fun activities that stimulate the dog.
This is great! Although I have two of these balls at home, I am afraid my cattledogs will puncture the balls within 2 seconds! And how can I excercise after that?!

Am I the only one who thinks this is stupid? Take a dog with the potential for being neurotic and then make it even more neurotic. Certainly this breed is smarter than THIS!
It gives the dog a job (and BCs *without* jobs are the one's more likely to be neurotic) and the dog gets to use some of the behaviors it would working stock.

You call barking at a ball and pushing it into a giant net a job? Do you even KNOW what this breed is capable of? This is an insult to this dog's intelligence. For the record, I've owned NINE of this breed. I know for a fact that the Border Collie can become neurotic under ALL sorts of circumstances. The barking is PART of the neurosis. There is no reason to bark at a ball. Try giving this dog something more difficult than pushing a ball somewhere. Any dog can do what THIS dog is doing.
@citydog Yeah, we have a border collie/ lab mix and he gets all excited and he's energetic with out a job. The job he gets the most often is to pull someone on a bike.
@citydog Couldn't agree with you more! The dog is actually extremely intent on following his handler's commands. He even waits to start until given the signal to do so!
@reiki2guy so you've owned NINE border collies. i've owned a half-hundred cats and i wouldn't call myself the last expert on the subject. newsflash: dogs bark. that's what they do. YOU may not see a reason to bark at the ball - but you're not a border collie, are you? the border collie is acting *precisely* like the dogs on the farms around here do they are dealing with a flighty sheep - only when the sheep are calm are the dogs silent and bouncing ball does not act "calm".
@threenorns3 You, much like a lot of the proponents of this ball-pushing "feat," are an idiot. You know nothing about how Border Collies herd sheep or how capable they are. They don't bark at sheep when they're working them. Go to a real herding trial and you'll never hear a working Border Collie bark at sheep. I'm not surprised you're a "cat person." You don't know shit about the Border Collie.
This looks like an awesome sport for herding/working breeds!

How is this making the dog "neurotic"?
