  • there's so much honesty in every and very line of the book!! thanks for posting this video

  • @shantaramfan - Try Vikram Chandra's "Sacred Games" or "Bombay: Maximum City" by Suketu Mehta. Both are really excellent and give you more insight in modern India and especially Mumbai. Actually that was my "therapy" after finishing "Shantaram" and having the same problem that you did. I can't wait for the sequel... I do read quite a lot, but the last ten years no book remotely touched me like this one. Thank you Mr. Roberts!

  • cool stuff

  • he is a strong character. I can definitely say I respect this man

  • ive only read 20 pages of the book and im allready hooked

  • the first line intrigued me so much I couldn't put it down.

  • can anyone please tell me how he got recaptured and the story after the end f the book shantaram, where he was off to another war.. or give me a link! THANK YOU!!

  • the best novel ever...good stuff!!!

  • man, i wud go now n tell scully how much i love her.....damn.

  • Simply....SIMPLY one of the best novels ever written. Based on truth but with the elements of fiction that it still grabs you and suck you in. GDR - a genius. If you haven't read Shantaram then you must.

  • beautiful. still makes me cry

  • He looks like Peter Everitt

  • i think i love him as much as i loved his book

  • the book is amazing and inspiring. so is the man. even if there is 50% of truth to this book (although i believe it 100% true!!)

  • is it just me, or does this man's voice sound familiar? I've just read (most) of his book, and found this to listen to. Amazing, he sounded so familiar to me but I can't work out who. Such a captivating voice. The deep resonance and confidence he speaks with is inspiring. All the very best to you GDR. Thank you for your words.

  • I think his voice sounds alot like robin williams.

  • he's meant to have another book comming out. it was due out in 2005!!! but hasnt been released yet

  • a man must love his bear

  • Shantaram i the best book I have ever read. I finished it 4 months ago and can't find anything else to read. The command Gregory has of the english language is brilliant. I was glued from the first word to the last and I could have read another 900 pages. What can I read next, any suggestions?

  • your own life!?

    I couldn't read more then a page.

  • There must be something wrong with you then, everybody who I know, have read the book and think it is one of the greats!

  • hey Shantaramfan- it's been a few years but try reading Papillon by Henri Charriere - from what I remember it has a similar feel to it, perhaps because it's also an autobiography written by an escaped convict on the run.

  • Thanks for your email. I have read Papillon and loved it. Another great book is "Slow walk to freedom" by Nelson Mandela.

  • hey what is better papillon or shantaram?? i read papillon at 15yo and it since been the best book ive ever read and ive still to read shantaram...if you want a book to read now, read scar tissue by anthony kiedis..great autobiography

  • I think Papillon is better.

  • i don't know anything about papillon, but i know shantaram is the best i've ever read and i can't even say how much i recommend it.

  • @bhav213 this blows Papillon out of the water. It's more believable for a start! I've read Papillon about ten times and Shantaram 3 or 4 times and they don't compare.

  • Dont worry bro, there will always be people like Coolreclusion, demented, just ignore them, this is one of teh best books ever written

  • @shantaramfan read song of solomon by toni morrison, then read kiterunner then read the power of one by courtney, you will love all three...shantaram was fantastic, no doubt

  • @shantaramfan I agree. I'm not much of a reader, but I could not stop reading this book. In fact I'm only half way through now but I can't wait to read more tonight. Great stuff. I don't know if it's totally true or not but either way it's a great story. Imagine if it is totally true. Cool.

  • @shantaramfan

From experience, when you learnn other languages like he has, your command of the English phonology and syntax actually becomes better.

  • @shantaramfan

read Rohinton Mistry: A Fine Balance. set in Bombay. amazing book!

  • Almost finished the book...Amazing stuff...He looks completely different to how i imagined him to be.

  • ohh i lovee him!

    he's so pure :)

  • Pure? He took drugs, committed armed robbery, escaped from prison, joined the mafia, and fought a war in Afghanistan. Pure... no, great man, yes!

  • i mean pure like.. a pure soul...

not like he ate his vegetables and went to church

  • Thank you so much for posting these. I dont want the book the end and i'm only half way.

    just love.

  • Brilliant, Inspiring, Exceptional and unparelled .....and so much more!

  • I read the book, really it's a marvel that should be read by any serious novel reader. So many bad things happend to him, to see him be so happy and casual is remarkable.

  • The man is a pure Legend.

  • He has a huge heart this man...

  • Very loving man. I'd want him on my side any day!

  • groovin :D:D

  • Superb!

  • thanks, brilliant !

  • i bow down to you......
