Not quite Ann Blyth and Vic Damone but sooooo close! I'm ashamed that I've not heard of the artists, but I can soon remedy that. Thank you leeecherry.
Actually the soprano sounds rather good in this recording... The lead tenor (the Caliph) definitely less so... And is that really Len Cariou as the Poet, Marsinah's father? What the hell happened to him? Sounds awful in this!
But yes, "Kismet" is from an era of musical theater writing when the emphasis was on the MUSIC.... i.e. most of the actors had to be able to sing! Check out the studio recording with Ruth Ann Swenson, Jerry Hadley & Sam Ramey... all fine singing actors!
I'm scared of singing opera like marsinah does. I've just been casted as marsinah and I'm trying to find some good versions of the songs where she's not singing opera ... I can't understand a word she's saying ... and it just makes my skin crawl. Does anyone know where I can get some NICE versions of the songs?
She's good at opera but there's no way I'll be able to sing like that.
@pluper222 wow jerk much? This is a really good recording. This is one of the leads hardest songs in the show. My best friend is marsina and my other friend is caliph i've had to do both of there parts when they were absent during rehearsals. it's hard ass anything. This recording is exactly as it is written in the score.

Check Julie Andrews. :-D She has a beautiful version, but I don't know if you'll consider that opera as well..
