  • wot

  • This is before considering angles, correct? This also features my favorite song :D

  • You forgot one thing in your calculations: nobody attempts to make a jump without... jumping. Whilst she would have made it anyway, shouldn't your average human's jump height been factored into this?

  • just jump if you miss you wil probably have more momentum as you go in the secound time or just infinite fall and shoot the top portal to the wall

  • yes, it will work, portal here, portal there, you jump, get the cake. Victory!

  • Easy

  • um... what?..

  • OR you could just grab the ASHPoD and do it and see if it works.

Aperture Science will surely give you cranial surgery if it doesnt work. Along with complimentary cake.

  • the test object has to crawl to get trough the "door"

  • my brain hurts! DX

  • Hm. This is too complicated. Now I have to go watch a RubberFruit video.

  • Sure is autism in here

  • Too much mathematics

  • if subject went in feet first, subject would land on subjects ass... needs to belly flop the first portal to be "standing" up right to land on cake ledge. jus saiyan.

  • x²-√2portal+10m/s /(2+2x)³ = *_*

  • tl;dm

  • Don't forget that Velocity is a vector. If this were linear momentum it would be true ;)

  • why not just wait there for a party escort to take us to the cake? =D

  • Well, you jump into the portal, if you do not make it, continue falling the 2nd time thru and u'll have the speed to make it :3

  • @breakerboy365 Exactly. Jump in the hole, gain 5meters. That 5 meters will pop you out of the Orange portal with enough distance to fall back in the blue portal. On this second thru, you will have 15m of distance traveled. allowing you to easly clear the 10m gap between the orange portal and the cake ledge.

I am didn't take physics to figure out this one.

  • this eqation made my head explode.im picking up my brain as i type.

  • @ilikethemoon1 i remember learing this in grade 11 physics :/

  • @muntasir20 what!!!?????:O

  • But will it blend?

  • bla bla bla, lets jump and take the cake

  • author is like my physics teacher

  • just do it, lol

  • And that's why math beats gay jocks' socks.

  • So its pretty much:

Speedy Thing goes in - Speedy Thing goes out.

    Am i right?

  • why not use g = 9.8 m/s^2 its more precise T.T

    unless its gravity actually changed..

  • my god i just cannot apply projectile in motion skills here! its absolutely breaking the laws of physics once you include the portals...

  • 1. Open blue portal at your feet, jump out orange portal, open blue portal where you're about to land, repeat. Problem solved.

    2. Alternatively, open orange portal on the white surface behind the cake. Problem?

    3. OP's wrong. You would only accelerate to about 9.81m/s in perfect vacuum, air resistance would reduce this significantly. IT DOES EXIST IN PORTAL, FFS, MAKE 2 FLOOR PORTALS AND JUMP IN, YOU'LL START SLOWING DOWN!

    4. The cake is a lie.

    5. There is no spoon. Or fork, for that matter.

  • wouldnt you also need to know chells weight because that would effect the speed she enters portal 1 and how far she comes out the other end?

  • @gregster249 The mass of the object is irrelevant as the acceleration due to gravity is a constant. Therefore, you can factor out the mass of the object and just focus on the distances.

  • pls watch in HD, WHAT HD?!?

  • Hmm. Could the survivability of the single-player ending in Portal 2 be expressed as a physics problem?

  • Please do more! I want to show this to my physics teacher! :)

  • The cake is not a lie... I just ate it all before you got here. ;)

  • Good job with getting an A on this!

  • Ok, of course if you jump into the blue portal you wont reach the cake right away, you have to jump into the blue portal, come out of the orange portal, fly past the ledge, fall into the blue portal again, having the added momentum, you'll come out of the orange portal and reach the cake. Simple. "Speedy thing goes in, speedy thing comes out."

  • What about gravity that pulls on you as soon as you have went through the portal?

Wouldn't there be a chance of you slamming into the ledge?

  • @oeneboy That was the point of the video. You would NOT slam into the ledge as the horizontal speed coming out of the orange portal would be sufficient to compensate for the downward acceleration due to gravity. In other words, your downward speed would be less than your horizontal speed. Therefore, you would stop ON the ledge, not IN the ledge.

  • I prefer to follow the theory "speedy thing goes in, speedy thing comes out"

  • Damned magnets!

  • Ummm... Anyone who doesn't know, e=mc squared was shattered by a particle going faster than the speed of light.

  • if math was in school like this it would be fun XD

  • velocity is a vector.

All your equations don't work because of that fact.

  • I feel so betrayed

  • I PLAY VIDEO GAMES SO I DON'T HAVE TO DO MATH. WHY ARE YOU MAKING THIS INTO A MATH PROBLEM!?!?

Actually, I'm kidding. Math is awesome ^_^

  • the awnser is ummm 9

  • That cake is HUGE! or the subject is really small :p

In stead of conservation of momentum, speed and velocity, I'd say conservation of kinetic energy, as the best label to slap on there. Although we all know what you're talking about.

Great example. Imma use a similar problem for my physics students who know this game :D

  • @FHomeBrew

I made a mistake in the middle of the project that made the subject a lot smaller, and I couldn't undo it. I was lazy and decided to keep the mini subject xD

I see your point, since the direction of the speed changes as the subject enters the portal. I'll edit that annotation at 0:50 Thank you for pointing that out.

I'm sure your students will love you for using Portal as a teaching aid xD

  • I...uh...derp.

  • I'm not even in physics class yet and I know what all this means. Hell I helped my friend's sister with her physics homework once, it's easy to me. But it takes a lot of time to solve some times..

I'm excited for physics class, honestly. I know a lot about it already, thanks to certain video games and my brother. :P

  • No, it will not work because the cake is a lie.

    ...

    SOMEONE had to say it!

  • @pckables

I was tempted to say that in my presentation. However the teacher never played Portal, and would therefore not understand the joke xD

  • Nope it will not work ... jump to blue and from yellow jump again to blue and you get a cake.

  • Portal: Teacher's Edition

  • Wtf? Just jump and see if it works

  • @jachvideos That becomes a bit of a problem if you don't have fallboots. If Cave Johnson fired all the handicapped workers because ramps are expensive, an already expensive pair of boots would be entirely optional back then. Thus is life at Aperture Science.

  • @jachvideos Or, you know, you could just crash into a wall, and break something.

  • @jachvideos Better if attempted with the Long Fall Boots. Or the Advanced Knee Replacement.

  • @jachvideos Well This was a project He/She did for school, figuring out if she would make it was part of the project.

  • @jachvideos *Someone* isn't a scientist. >.>

  • Nice, can't believe how much math there is in one very simple problem IRL

  • eh?

  • Nice video!!! I like it! :)

  • i dont get it...

  • So.....Whats the problem?

  • @legocaptainrex1000 As in a physics problem, from a text book.

  • my brain hurts

  • if only in my physics class, we use portal as a guide. If, only if.

  • ...

*dies due to rules of physics*
