  • We need 2024 Olympics in Los Angeles again!!!!

IF YOU LIVED IN LA during the 80's, YOU WOULD HAVE REMEMBERED THAT THEY CLEAN THE CITY. THE CITY IS DIRTY AGAIN, MAYBE HAVING THE OLYMPICS AGAIN WOULD BE A GOOD EXCUSE TO RECLEAN THE CITY

  • Ah, the 1984 opening ceremony! The first Summer Olympics I really got into! I was 11 that year, got a tv for my birthday and so spent that summer taking full advantage of being on school holidays and staying up as late as I could manage to watch as much live coverage on Olympic Grandstand as I could! VERY FOND memories! :D

  • Moscow 80!!

    Soviet shit!!

    Evil Empire!!

    No comunists!!!

  • These were great games. I was at two of the track and field events in the 2nd row....awesome experience!

  • 0:52 moja stara Jugoslavija

  • We can see Algeria's flag

  • that whole card thing was epic

  • the 2 games in Los Angeles I believe are the only games to make a profit. They were awesome!!

  • @DanielTAHK the Rocket man replaced an Eagle. We rehearsed with an eagle but I was told it died before the show. It was an amazing show I was proud to be a performer in.

  • @iiBrandi

I did not know that history, but anyway, the rocket man had a very strange performance, maybe the eagle could do it better.

  • Thats a really long way up.

  • Wow! Colt Seavers at 0:13.

b.t.w. The very, very, very best Olympic Games ever.

  • I think this opening was very fool, one of the worse.

This rocketman is "What?", I did not understand why they put him there.

They copied these panels (0:50) from russians in their 1980 games, but had not the skill (and creativity) to do better, and became clumsy.

The lighting of cauldron ( 3:54 ) was ordinary, no surprises.

And a these typical american little flags...

    LACK of creativity.

  • @DanielTAHK Hummmm, let me see if I understand your analysis? A very bright sunny day on a lovely summer afternoon, an EXTREMELY ENTHUSIASTIC crowd! A very COLORFUL display of pageantry, "rocketman" has launched himself to centerstage to signal the opening of these SUPERB games! Applause, brass and cheers to the delight of spectators and athletes alike! An OUTSTANDING turnout of 140 competing nations-WOW ! Despite Soviet bloc there were still world records set! Also over 2 billion viewers!

  • @farwayout

Each one has its own analysis, but I was talking about the lack of new elements in this opening ceremony, considering each olympic games have to be better and more inovative than the last ones, and no just have an idea from the other's games, like the panels, and I think the CEREMONY of these games in Los Angeles were not so great as the others, the games itself were normal, records, several nations and viewers.

Moscow 80 for example were very emotive games, LA 84 were not.

  • @DanielTAHK I don't want to turn this into a debate but I feel I should respond accordingly. You seem to put a great emphasis on the paneling event -what I understood this to be was an ENTHUSIASTIC participation of the spectators in attendance to be a "PART" of the festivities-a sense of belonging, which personifies friendship and a UNITY! Also the Pioneer heritage history, The Black Jazz Ensemble, the negro spiritual and The Hollywood Stage homage-JUST OUTSTANDING!Far from MEDIOCRITY or "normal"

  • @farwayout

    Right, I understand your point.

  • why do tv stations always try to shorten the parade of nations?

is it because its 2 hours long or more because I watched thirdbase3's videos of the Athens 2004 Parade of Nations and it was 2 hrs long. please let me know!!!!

  • Yugoslaviaaa!!!! :D

  • is that space man michael jackson?

  • Wow, looking back at this the Beijing opening ceremonies makes this look like a high school production.

  • The fire-rings thing would've looked so much better if the ceremony had taken place at night.

  • So awesome- gave me the chills!!

  • a guy with a jet-pack at the Olympics opening Ceremory, no doubt this HAS to be america

  • @videofieldsoldier - you're right.... flaunting what they they thought only their country has.... well in fact they are scared of russia!!! this is a very sloppy opening ceremony.... americans are just so full of shit... this kind of opening ceremony can be done even in the third world countries... their OC was their channel to tell the world they are powerful... but they're wrong... russia and korea remains in power!!!!

  • My absolute favourite year ever! I loved 1984!

  • i would have been the douch bag starting the wave in the flag ceromony

  • 1984 olympic i like this

  • flags were the best

  • What a great memories 26 years after, remember was there representing my country in track and field,,,It's a honor!!!

  • rocket man is sick!

  • there was a video on here of the multiple piano playing rhapsody in blue but I can't find it anymore. It must've been nuked!

  • Best Olympics ever.

  • @burnit2000

Impossible when 5 or 6 of the most powerful nations(sportsly) missed the games......

  • @davp11 On the contrary, for those eastern bloc soviet countries that did not attend still there were world records set and a most memorable Olympics-as you can watch from these ceremonies-NOBODY WAS DISSAPOINTED!!!!

  • @farwayout but more worrld recrods would been broken if east countries would play, and about the oppiening the falgs-show was amazing, but barcelona 92 sydney 2000 and beijing 2008 were better and maybe 2004,1988 were better too

  • @davp11 Indeed, I could agree that more world records would have been achieved had the Soviets,GDR and the rest of the communist bloc countries attended-HOWEVER maybe the other side of this is that the "SUCCESS' of an Olympic game should'nt just be based on World records but the SPIRIT, HEARTFELT ENTHUSIASMS, FRIENDHIP and CAMERADERIE-that unites us all !!LA Opening ceremonies were indeed-SPECTACULAR!Athletes and spectators alike were ENTHRALLED by the impressive pageantry-I would AGREE!

  • @farwayout you have the right to give us an opinion bue in SPIRIT, HEARTFELT,FRIENDSHIP, were better games than LA84, Melbourne 56 Mexico 68 Barcelona 92 Sydney 2000 and Beijing 2008, maybe your opinion is because you are from USA, but in the world, the Barcelona and the Beijing game are more unforgettabels than the LA games in this terms.

  • @davp11 You seem to have some serious issues with the LA84 Summer Games.Did you watch the ENTIRE opening ceremonies or just snippets of the OC!What I had posted previously was that LA84 Games were very CHARMING, LOVELY and ENDEARING-NOT ONCE did I make disparaging remarks about other Olympic Games-YOU ARE PUTTING WORDS INTO MY MOUTH ! Also many of us were not around when Melbourne56 and Mexico68 occured-true I am American but I can also see the BEAUTY of other OG! GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!!

  • I knew great singer Sarah Vaughan sang during the opening of games...where is she?

  • USSR Boycot

  • What is the SONG at the very beginning? I am searching for it!

  • @MegaKillazz Theme from Chariots of Fire

  • @MegaKillazz i think its its chariots of fire

  • @MegaKillazz I think its Chariots of Fire.

  • My mistake, i meant eastern european country from the Warsaw Treaty. Yougoslavia wasn't part of that Pact.

  • Romania was the only eastern european country presented on this event. It won 53 medals, 20 golds.

  • @cristina561 Apart from Yugoslavia

  • @ynotlleb My mistake, i meant the only eastern european country from the Warsaw Treaty.

  • @ynotlleb yes but Yugoslavia was not considered part of the Eastern Bloc.

  • @cristina561

we were second place, after the US

  • @alexzaha stiu

  • @cristina561 actually Romania entered the competition, although being part of the Warsaw Pact and that the soviets ordered so, so it's not that the fact that it was from the Eastern Europe. But yes Romania won a lot of medals and gained second place after US, although 140 nations competed.

@ynotlleb Yes Yugoslavia did participate, also they organized the Winter Olympics a few months prior to the Summer edition, way to go brothers.

  • ROFL IMMA LAUGH IF NO ONE LIFTED IT UP

  • does anyone know where I can find the complete video of the 1984 opening ceremonies. I was a placard bearer for Peru and have never seen it played back so that I could see myself. Thanks ahead of time

  • @thetallscot I have uploaded all I have of the LA84 opening ceremony, I would try

the LA84 foundation web page to see if they could help you.

  • @ynotlleb thank you for the information!

  • @thetallscot I have it somewhere in a box of old videos Let me see the condition it's still in.

  • how can he flies?

  • @arruggnir hes got a jetpack

  • can u please give me the list of the order of this videos???

  • @scorpioninpink Start with opening ceremony, end with closing ceremony, after that it doesn't matter.

  • I bet you that if the Soviet Union played in the 1984 Olympics, that you wouldn't see the cool flag effect at 51 seconds because there is no way in hell Americans would hold up the flag with the sickle and the hammer on it during the days of the Cold War lol.

  • Respect toall olympic stadiums but only one in my mind is the best and thats Los Angeles truly the best stadium in the world with great Tradition and history that stadium has seen World class athletes year in and year out from American football championships and super bowls to Gold cups and world cups to baseball world series and Basketball champions just a few events that make it one of if not the best Sports stadium in history!

  • LONDON 2012

    I'll be there

  • Just wait for London 2012 :-)

  • Not bad, but the olympic games 80 in Moscow is better !!!

  • @BigPotap The 84 LA Summer Games seems to CAPTURE the TRUE essence of the Olympic ideals and motto-PERIOD!!!!!

  • @farwayout Such beautiful songs as in the Olympic Games 80, I have not heard anywhere else!

And the ideals you have and we have always been different!

  • @BigPotap excuse me for being so blunt but these ideals of cameraderie, friendship and sport are NOT foreign or obsolete! Indeed as you can see for yourself the beauty and spectacle of these games are OUTSTANDING! These games truly personify the genuine warmth and friendships that should unite us all!

  • love it

  • Superbe cérémonie !!!!

  • it would have been awesome if the jet pack guy flew up to the Olympic Torch and lit it

  • Funny you should say that because it was seriously proposed to the Opening Ceremony committee but dismissed as being potentially deadly if it all went wrong. It'll have to remain as one of history's many "What if..." scenarios.

  • that could have been a sensless freak accident,im glad the guy in the jetpack landed safely,,,that didnt look safe !

  • wow that is so cool

  • Why dont I have a jetpack:O

  • My history teacher was doing dancer for this olympic (opening or closing celemony)

  • I was 13 years old, when I became fully aware of the Olympics, and I've been watching both the Winter and Summer Olympics since then.

  • The cards making up the flags of the nations was a precurser to the modern day flash mob.

  • Nice. I was too young to remember any of this in L.A. It would be nice if someone posted the whole thing. ;)

  • lol I remember this, I was 5 years old. My dad took me to see the coliseum.

  • jetpackman was referenced in the lastest episode of NCIS!! lol

  • The American team uniform looked like Dominos pizza delivery man.

  • "Get the door, it's Dominos!" Hahaha!

  • @socalmuscleboi168 it does LOL

  • @socalmuscleboi168 : lol. Dominos delivery men. Very true.

  • ynotleb, is there a possiblity that you might be able to upload more of these fantastic opening ceremonies particularly the opening ceremonies?

  • that's all i have of the opening ceremony from la84

  • Show Greece First! What is this Great Brittain shit?

  • @Philflash This is 5 minutes from a 2+ hour opening ceremony as part of the British Broadcasting Corporation Olympics highlights programme from 1984

  • beijing 2008 best ever

  • @furiamadridista until 2012 :-)

  • @ynotlleb until 2016 :-)

  • touche :-)

  • that was cool with the cards showing the flags of the nations

  • I can see an Iraq flag here... uh... happy Reagan days, when all are friends...

  • Russian olympic games were better ;)

  • remember yugoslavia

  • bongga ang 1984 olympics. walo pako ka toig ani nga panahuna.

  • I'd love to see the scene when Romania enters in the opening ceremony parade and there was a standing ovation because Romania defied the Soviet Union and refused to boycott the games. The only communist country that came.

  • Not true, China came and they got a standing ovation too (If not a larger one)

  • China didn't matter because China was not part of the Warsaw Pact or a Soviet satellite and so they were under no obligation to obey the order from Moscow. Romania on the other hand challenged and ignored a direct order from Moscow even thought Romania was part of the Warsaw Pact and that took a lot of courage and independence.

  • "... I declare giant tax breaks on those who least need them, and tax hikes on everyone else! Trust me, I'm the President (and an actor!!)!"

  • I want that jetpack

  • y donde mierda esta el hombrek vuelaaa

  • On this beautiful sun lit summer day with a lovely blue lit sky in the backdrop who needs a roof!!!!

  • Yes but as the old song goes "It never rains in southern california"

  • It pours :P

  • Lol what?

  • LA stadium doesn't need a roof like Munich because it hardly rains, and never snows here. LA weather is fantastic 365.

  • i second that

  • That is absolutely stunning and beautiful with the flags and everything.

  • I was there, 10th seat 3rd row in the French flag, you can see my yellow shirt with the little bear on it !

  • impressive

  • wheres samoa joe?

  • July 28, 1984... 25 years ago!!! Hard to imagine it's been that long... A GREAT time in L.A.!!!

  • Jeto absoljutno prawy!

Da sdrawstwuet nemeckii - sowetskoi druzhby!

    Slawa!!!

  • you cant get that anymore unfortunately no one has that kind of respect for one one another

  • That´s true cause in a olimpics there is not Russia, sports like gimnastic loose the emotion that we can see, when Russians and USA atheltes are competing to win each other.

  • Watching these Olympic Games live & in person, I never felt more proud to be an American! I felt so overwhelmed by the great enthusiam and heartfelt unity of all nations and friendship of these superb Games! A sincere and warm appreciation Los Angeles-take a bow!!! You certainly deserve it! ... David Harrison Levi - STARMAKER®™ - David Levi Entertainment Worldwide LLC Beverly Hills, CA 90210 USA Personal Management - Music Producer

You certainly deserve it!!!(SMILE!!!)

  • Ask Daley Thompson and his German friends/rivals if they thought it was a meaningless competition?

The 1980 and 1984 Olympic Games were both great events. They would have been even better if the boycotts hadn't happened.

The world doesn't need any more binary thinking.

    best wishes from soggy England

  • Plenty of Germans in LA in 1984. Michael Gross, Jurgen Hingsen, Ulrike Meyfarth......

  • These were the best Olympics ever IMO. Didn't miss a minute of it. I especially loved the gymnastics competition.

  • giggle

  • Yell right!. This Chinese "stagged" most of the fireworks and the whole ceremony was very militaristic. But what would you expect from a Communist country.

  • Yes Terry Wogan broadcast on BBC Radio 2 every night during the Los Angeles Olympics.

  • who was the BBC commentator for olympic games 1984 ?

  • David Coleman

  • oh....not Terry Wogan ? (who commented for BBC in Eurovision 1980-->2008)

  • Wogan did his radio show from LA in 1984 during the games.

  • it means he did during he was living in LA ?

  • David lol I thought so..... The legend, which sadly was running out of steam in the late 1990´s

  • man things seemed less advanced in 1984 lol sorry its just because i was born 1994 so yea lol

  • I remember watching this 25 yrs ago as a kid

  • whats that song at the start?

  • "Titles" from the soundtrack to Chariots of Fire by Greek synthesizer composer Vangelis.

  • thankyou

  • they completely copied the placard thing from the Moscow Olympics 4 years before

  • Yes they did, read Peter Ueberroth's book on the LA 1984 games.

  • why we cant see 2008 olympic games here in youtube?

  • what kind of music is that at the very start of this video.

  • 9/11

  • Yes, they were the best. But Chinese were also as good!

  • lol the usa uniform reminds me of the domino pizza delivery guys...

  • The one thing was impresive - cards with flags. But isn't this idea copied from Moscow Olimpics 1980, when people with cards was showing different pictures?

  • i agree

  • i remember i was playing the atari 400 during this time.

  • your face is boring

  • My eyes got teary when I went to the LA Colisium for the firs time!!

  • Imagine if the Soviets didn't boycott, do you think they would have still done the flag thing?

Can't imagine to many Americans being to keen to hold up the old sickle and hammer. ha ha.

  • it would be better if the event is held at night

  • el efecto de las banderas fue muy lindo!!, the flags effect was beautiful

  • Not bad for 1984.

  • that was pretty good.

  • Doesn't the usa team look like they work for dominoes pizza? lol

  • HAHA, yes, it is dominoee pizza!!!

  • amazing!!!!!!!

  • wow @ that card trick!

  • the rocket man was ridiculous!

  • What is the music at 3.20 please?

  • Sousa's Stars and Stripes forever.

  • Where's Samoa Joe lol

  • I did not see ussr flag ;o)
